🇺🇸 United States – LATEST NEWS: Fog and malfunctioning weather instruments may have played a key role in San Diego plane crash

A private Cessna Citation II jet crashed early on May 22, 2025, in the Murphy Canyon area of San Diego, striking a residential building and igniting fires in about 15 homes and several vehicles. All six people on board, including well-known music agent Dave Shapiro and former The Devil Wears Prada drummer Daniel Williams, are presumed dead. Over 100 residents were evacuated, and eight people were injured—some while escaping through windows.

According to the National Weather Service, dense fog reduced visibility to around 0.5 miles at the time of the crash. The pilot reported poor visibility and requested weather updates. However, the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport weather station had been offline since May 20, forcing the pilot to rely on data from nearby Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

Experts note that in low-visibility conditions, pilots follow instrument flight rules (IFR), but once descending to about 675 feet (205 meters), they must visually confirm the runway. If that’s not possible, they are required to go around or reroute.

Authorities are investigating weather conditions and the malfunctioning weather instruments as potential contributing factors to the tragedy. The investigation is ongoing.
