🇮🇩 Eruption of Mount Semeru in East Java, Indonesia

🌋 At 01:32 UTC on April 15, 2025, Mount Semeru began an explosive eruption. An ash and steam column rose more than 4,600 meters above the Jonggring Saloko crater.

💨 Initial observations showed white or whitish smoke, which typically indicates a high concentration of water vapor. This suggests interaction between magma and groundwater, or gas emissions with low ash content.

🌋 According to the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption is ongoing. Explosive eruptions are occurring from the crater at regular intervals of approximately 15–30 minutes. Gray ash plumes are rising about 1,000 meters above the crater, and lava bombs are being ejected in multiple directions.

📉 The volcanic observatory reported a seismic signal with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 190 seconds.
