Encouragement on being abstinent from the Dunya

All praise be to Allah, and may the salutations and peace be upon the messenger of Allah and upon his family and his companions and those that follow him.

As for that which follows:

This is a important advice for the student of knowledge from our Sheikh, Al-Muhhadith (one who is grounded in the knowledge of hadeeth) Al-Faqeeh , Muhammad bin hizaam, may Allah preserve him and protect him and may islaam and the Muslims benefit by way of him.

This advice, which he delivered in darul hadeeth As-salafiyah in IBB, may allah guard it and all of the Muslim lands, took place on the fourth of the dhul hijjah in the year 1440h.

Our Sheik Abu abdillah, may Allah ﷻ give him success and preserve him, said:

" So it is incumbent upon the muslim, and especially the student of knowledge, that he has the upmost concern in not asking for money nor having a yearning for it, for Allahﷻ has made a means which suffices you from that (asking for money) by borrowing money, like the way prophet ﷺ used to borrow, the prophet ﷺ used to borrow money and so did the best of the companions and likewise the rightly guided caliphates borrowed money, verily Allah has made a way out for you from this lowly act, so be patient.

If you are in need of money then upon you is either to work or to take a debt, and I do not advise the student of knowledge to work, and to busy himself with work while he is able to find someone who will lend him some money. So this advice is for the students of knowledge, that they do not busy themselves with work, if they are able to find one who will lend them money then let him take it. This is a blessing from Allah ﷺ upon on you, and Allah will make it easy for you to pay it back, as for some of the deceptions of shaytaan that he has deceived some of the students of knowledge with ( he says to them) "go and work", then these are from his deceptions he uses to busy you from this good.
Some of them (shaytaan) will say to him:

•"Go work so you can save up for marriage"

•"Go work for just a year, get married and then seek knowledge"

This miskeen will then go and work for a year, two years, three years later and he's still not married nor is he seeking knowledge, rather if you ask about his situation then he will say:
"I swear by Allah I'm in debt"
He left and after two, three, four years he's still in debt, while on other the hand, had you just faced Allah with a sincere heart , being truthful to him, he would bring the provisions to you and bring marriage to you while your in the masjid, he'll provide you with a house and money and other provisions.

And I swear by Allah it is worthless compared to what your upon from goodness, these affairs ( money, dunya etc..) are worthless compared to what you are upon from good, you have the book of Allah and the sunnah of the prophet ﷺ,
Ponder over the speech of the prophet ﷺ narrated by abu hurayrah may Allah be pleased with him he said that the prophet ﷺ said
*"《For me to say subhanAllah, wal-Alhamdulillah, wa Laa ilaaha ill-Allah, walaahu akbar, is more beloved to me than everything which the sun has risen upon》"* reported by muslim.

Four phrases that the Muslim says with sincerity and truthfulness and hoping the reward from Allah ﷻ, is better for him than the dunya and everything in it, so how about if you have memorized the book of Allah ﷻ and you have memorized many Ahaadeeth from the sunnah of the prophet ﷺ remembering Allah ﷻ day and night in circles of knowledge, I swear by Allah it is better than the dunya and everything it contains, don't belittle that which you have from good, Rather it is the dunya which is worthless. Allah ﷻ puts his slaves to test with poverty and hardship and with illnesses, *so be patient on that which you are upon from being upon steadfastness, and the sunnah for it is better than the dunya and everything which it contains*, and that which you are upon from memorizing the quraan and the sunnah is better than the dunya and everything it contains, and shaytaan
decei
ves some of them he says to them:
"Work so you can pay off your debts"
And perhaps his debts are something small and perhaps those whom he has taken a debt from are not asking for it, then shaytaan comes and decieves him,
" Go work and pay off your debts"
so he goes and starts to work, then you ask him after a year if he has paid off his debts, so he replies:
" They are more now than they were before"
Many have been busied with work and they have not been given tawfeeq (success), they left off seeking knowledge and are now chasing the dunya.

So that which you are upon is better, *be patient* make yourself patient and upon you is to make duaa (invocate) if your are tested with poverty and hardship, it is upon you to make duaa. Ad-duaa is from the best of means and greatest of means ( to remove that which you have been tested with) call upon Allah ﷻ with certainty and Allah will make your affairs easy, if the affairs have become too hard upon you and you have cannot find someone to borrow you money, then work a small number of days depending on what is needed to fulfill your need, work a day or two or three, a week, 10 days until you are able to fulfill your need, then return back to seeking knowledge, for the one who needs to work then let him make it the last of his solutions, as for if you are not in need and you don't have a family to look after, then your upon good so praise Allah, and all praise is for Allah you are given your provision, we are in a great blessing , we seek knowledge and our provisions come to us, you eat and you drink.

■ The students of knowledge in the olden times used to travel long distances, the imaams used to travel long distances and they were in need to work due to some (travelling) expenses or they used to ask for a loan or borrow money or they would sell some of their belongings in order to spend that money on the journey, then if they went to seek knowledge they were in need also of some spending money for food, so they would sell some of their belongings or work a day or part of a day, and they would seek knowledge in the rest of the day, as for you now, all praise if for allah, then your provisions and your food and your drink come to you, there's nothing left for you to do except to strive in seeking knowledge, so strive and we are in a great blessing, I ask Allah  that he aids us in thanking him, and I praise Allah many good blessed praises, we praise him, many good and blessed praises which do not end, we praise him equal to the number of his creation, praises which pleases him and that which equal in weight with his throne, praises which are equal to the ink of his words (which have no end and cannot be enumerated), we praise him, praises which fill the sky and earth and everything in between and fill whatever our lord wishes to be filled with after that, and we are not able praise him they way he deserves to be praised, for he is the way he praises himself, we praise Allah and I ask him to preserve these blessings and to aid us and you in remembering him and thanking him and worshiping him in the best of manners.

Glory be to you oh Allah and to you belongs all praise, I bear witness that there is no diety is worthy of worship except you, we seek your forgiveness and repent to you.

*The Virtue of Fasting the Day of ‘Ashoora*

*Sheikh Muhammad ibn Hizaam* حفظه الله wrote:

“Fasting ‘Ashoora

It comes in the Saheeh Muslim from Abu Qatadah (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (ﷺ) was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Ashoora. He said: *“It expiates the sins of the past year”*

An-Nawawi (رحمه الله تعالى) said in Sharh Saheeh Muslim (8/4): “The Scholars agreed that fasting ‘Ashoora is Sunnah“.

They differed regarding day of ‘Ashoora. The majority of the Scholars of the Salaf and those who came after them were of the opinion that *‘Ashoora is the tenth of Muharram.*

It was said it is the ninth day. They said: it is the opinion of Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) and they used as evidence what is in Saheeh Muslim:

Hakam b. al-‘Araj reported: I went to Ibn ‘Abbas (Allaah be Pleased with both of them) and he was reclining using his mantle as a pillow near the fountain of Zamzam. I said to him: Tell me about fasting on Ashura. He said: When you see the new moon of Muharram then count the (days) and observe fast on the 9th. I said to him: Is it how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed the fast? He said: Yes.

What is apparent is that Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) intended by fasting the ninth to oppose the Jews, not that ‘Ashoora is the ninth due to the evidence of what came in Saheeh Muslim:

That when the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) fasted on the day of ‘Ashoora and commanded that it should he observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him:Messenger of Allaah, it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem. Thereupon the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said: *When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the ninth. But the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) died before the advent of the next year.*

And what supports that is what is established from Sa’eed ibn Mansoor with a Saheeh chain as is in the book al-Iqtidaa as-Siraat al-Mustaqeem from Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him): *“Fast the ninth and tenth, oppose the Jews”*

[See: Sharh Saheeh Muslim (8/11-12), Fath (no. 2008), and Tafseer al-Qurtubi (1/391)]

🔗 *Combining Between the Ninth and Tenth Day*

It is benefited from the Hadith from Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) in the previous issue that it is recommended to fast the ninth with the tenth in opposition to the Jews. The majority of the Scholars recommended it. From them is Shafi’ee and Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy upon them)

[See: Sharh Muslim (8/12-23) and Tawdeeh al-Ahkaam (3/201)]

📜 *Wisdom Behind the Command to Fast ‘Ashoora*📜

In the Saheeh on the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that:

That the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) arrived in Medina and found the Jews observing fast on the day of ”Ashoora. The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said to them: *What is the (significance) of this day that you observe fast on it?* They said: It is the day of great (significance) when Allaah سبحانه و تعالى delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) s
aid: *We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have; so Allaah’s Messenger (ﷺ) observed fast (on the day of ‘Ashoora), and gave orders that it should be observed.*

[See: Sharh Muslim (8/9)]

Note:

It was mentioned in the previous Hadith: *“It expiates the sins of the past”*. What is apparent is that fasting the day of ‘Ashoora expiates the minor and major sins. However, the majority of Scholars are of the opinion that it does not expiate the major sins. If one fasts the day of Arafah and the day of ‘Ashoora, then they are not better than fasting Ramadan nor are they better than the five obligatory prayers.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

*The five (daily) prayers and from one Friday prayer to the (next) Friday prayer, and from Ramadhan to Ramadhan are expiations for the (sins) committed in between (their intervals) provided one shuns the major sins.* [Reported by Muslim from the authority Abu Hurariah (may Allah be pleased with him)]

This is the statement of the majority of the Scholars and it is the more correct opinion.

[See: Sharh Muslim (6/383) and Tawdeeh al-Ahkam (3/201)]”

◾️The Dowry amount the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave to his wives◾️

Answered by Shaykh Abu Hamza Hassan bin Muhammed Ba Shu'ayb - may Allah preserve him - on the 14th, Muharram, 1441H

📝🔹Question:

How much did the Prophet ﷺ give of Dowry to his wives, if it was to be (calculated) in Yemeni currency?

📩🔸Answer:

Its been narrated in the Hadith of Abu Salama bin 'Abdi Rahman, that he said:

“I asked 'Aisha, the wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ-What was the Dowry amount of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?
She said “The Dowry for his wives was twelve 'uqiyah and one an-nashu. She said: Do you know what an-nashu is? I said: No. She said: It’s half of ‘uqiyah, and it amounts to five hundred dirhams, and that was the Dowry given by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to his wives."
[Sahih Muslim]

-500 dirhams is equivalent to 1487.5 grams of silver. It’s value today is approximately 250,000 Yemeni riyals-

◾️Allah will answer to the one who supplicates with the supplication of Prophet Yunus ﷺ◾️

Answered by Shaykh Abu Hamza Hassan bin Muhammed Ba Shu'ayb - may Allah preserve him - on the 18th, Safar, 1439H

📝🔹Question:

Is it permissible to supplicate with the supplication of Yunus ﷺ:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

(Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innee kuntu minal thaalimeen)
“There is no God who has the right to be worshipped except You, Glory be to You, distant are You from any imperfections”

📩🔸Answer:

Yes it’s permissible.

As It comes in the Hadith narrated by Sa’d bin abi Waqaas, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“The supplication of Dhun-Nun (Prophet Yunus ﷺ) when he supplicated, while in the belly of the whale was:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

-There is none worthy of worship except You, free of any deficiencies and glory be to You, Indeed, I have been of the transgressors-

For indeed, no Muslim supplicates with it for anything, ever, except Allah responds to him.”

▪️We are in need of offering our daily supplications more than our need for food & drink▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam -may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

The questioner says: Can you offer some advice to those who are busied from performing the after prayer invocations as well as the morning and evening supplications?

📝 Answer:

We advise him to focus on doing the supplications, as it is sustenance which gives life to the heart; the morning and evening supplications, as well as the invocations said after the prayer are a sustenance for your heart.

You are in need of these supplications more than your bodies need for food and drink, so do not busy yourself from offering the after prayer supplications, nor the morning and evening invocations. Likewise, when Adhan is called, repeat after the Muadhin.

So we advise you to give concern to these supplications more than your concern for food and drink.

When the heart is given its sustenance, a person remains lively the whole day; if he is regular in his supplications, he will be lively in seeking knowledge and in his worship, and his dealings with people will improve; his dealings with his wife, kids, neighbours and brothers will all improve. Whereas, if he were to fall short in that, his dealings with others will worsen and he will feel tightness in his chest.

So pay great attention to safeguarding the supplications.

And I would like to request from my brothers that they do not disturb me from reciting the morning supplications after the Fajr prayer. If anyone needs anything, they should wait until after sunrise.
