A Woman Looking At Men Who Are Not Her Mahram (With Or Without Desire)
Ibn Kathīr raḥimahullāh said: “Many scholars are of the view that it is not permissible for a woman to look at non-mahram men with desire or without desire in the first place. And many of them cited as evidence what Abū Dāwūd and At-Tirmidhi narrated, from the ḥadīth of Umm Salamah (raḍhiyallāhu ’anhā) that she was with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ together with Maymūnah. She said: Then Ibn Umm Maktūm entered, and that was after we were commanded to cover up. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ ordered us to cover up, so I said: O Messenger of Allāh, is he not blind and so he cannot see us and does not know us? The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Are you both blind?” Do you not see him?” At-Tirmidhi said: This is an authentic hadith (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ).”
