Breaking The Fast With An Odd Number Of Dates

1st Hadฤซth: Abu Ya'alฤ reported in his Musnad (3305) from the hadฤซth of Anas bin Mฤlik - may Allฤh be pleased with him - said that the Prophet - salal-ฤ€llahu โ€˜alahi wa salam - used to like to break his fast with three dates or something which was not cooked.

Note: In the chain of narration of the hadฤซth is Abdul-Wฤhid bin Thฤbit. Al-Bukhฤri said about him โ€˜Munkar al-ahฤdฤซthโ€™ (his narrations are rejected).

Al-Imฤm al-Albฤnฤซ also declared the hadฤซth extremely weak in as-Silsilah adh-Dhaฤซfah, hadฤซth numb. (966).

2nd Hadฤซth: Abu Bakr ash-Shฤfi'ฤซ reported in his Fawฤid (1/105), from Jฤbir - may Allฤh be pleased with him -said that he - salal-ฤ€llahu โ€˜alahi wa salam - used to like to break his fast on fresh dates so long as they were there, and upon dried dates if there were no fresh dates. And he would (also have dates) after a meal and would eat them in odds; three or five or seven.

Note: In the chain of narration there is al-Farฤzฤซ, who is Muhammad bin Ubaidillฤh. Al-Imฤm Ahmed said about him โ€˜the people (of hadฤซth) abandoned his narrationsโ€™.

Al-Imฤm al-Albanฤซ declared the hadฤซth also extremely weak in his book as-Silsilah adh-Dhaฤซfah, hadฤซth numb. (1749).

The noble Shaykh Muhammad bin Sฤlih al-Uthaymฤซn - may Allฤh have mercy on him - was asked:

I have heard that the fasting person at the time he breaks his fast must break his fast with an odd number of dates i.e. five or seven dates and so on. So, is this an obligation?

He responded:

This is not an obligation, in fact it is not a Sunnah for a person to break there fast with an odd number; three, five, seven, nine except on the day of โ€˜Eid, โ€˜Eid ul-Fitr. For it is established the Prophet - salal-ฤ€llahu โ€˜alahi wa salam - never proceeded for the prayer on the Day of โ€˜Eid-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. He would eat an odd number of dates. And besides this, then indeed the Prophet - salal-ฤ€llahu โ€˜alahi wa salam - did not used to intend that his eating of dates be in odd numbers.

*A Must Read

*When should we look out for Laylatul Qadr

Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah - ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ - was asked this very question while in captivity in the year 706 Hijri...

...To which He responded:

*Laylatul Qadr occurs during the last ten (nights) of Ramadhan*. This is what is authentically established from the Prophet ๏ทบ, that he ๏ทบ said:

"Look out for Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadhan."
[Hadeeth Aishah : Bukhari & Muslim]

And In the version of Bukhari, he ๏ทบ said:
"Look out for Laylatul Qadr *during the odd nights* of the last ten nights of Ramadhan."

However, it is important to note that *there are two ways of calculating the odd nights:*

*THE FIRST:*
*By counting the days that have already passed*; such that Laytul Qadr could fall on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or the 29th night of Ramadhan.

or

*THE SECOND:*
*By counting the days that remain*, just as the Prophet ๏ทบ said:

"Look out for the Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadhan, *on the night when nine or seven or five nights remain* (out of the last ten nights of Ramadan)."
[Hadeeth Ibn Abbas : Bukhari]

*This means that if Ramadhan was 30 days - and only Allah knows if this will be the case - Laylatul Qadr will fall on one of the even nights*, because the 22nd will be the night when nine remain, the 24th will be when seven remains and the 26th will be when five remains.

This is the understanding of Abu Sa`eed Al-Khudri

Muslim reported that Abu-un-Nadhr enquired:
"O Aba Sa'id, you know more than us about (these) numbers. He said: Yes, indeed we have better right than you. I said: What is this ninth, seventh, and fifth? He said: *When 21 (nights are over) and the 22nd begins, it is the ninth, and when 23 (nights) are over, that which follows (I.e. The 24th) is the seventh, and when 25 nights are over, what follows it (I.e. The 26th) is fifth".*

If, however, Ramadhan consists of 29 days, these two forms of calculations will be exactly the same.

*This being the case, it is befitting that the Believer works hard throughout the last ten nights of Ramadhan*, just as the prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Look out for Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadhan."
[Hadith Aisha : Bukhari & Muslim]

This is also proven by the practice of the prophet ๏ทบ, just as Aisha ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ุง said:

"With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet ๏ทบ used to tighten his waist belt (i.e. work hard) and used to pray all the night, and he would also wake his wives."
