It is better to perform wudhu in addition to the ghusl for Jum'ah but acceptable not to

Our Shaykh Abu Bilaal Al-Hadhramy- may Allah preserve him- was asked the following question on 9th Jamaada Al-Awwal 1441(4th January 2020):

📝🔹Question:

The Questioner says: Is it sufficient for the one who performed ghusl for Jum'ah to pray in this state, with the knowledge he has not performed wudhu?

📩🔸Answer:

There is a differing in (regards to) the ghusl of Jum'ah; for indeed the majority of scholars view it not to suffice without wudhu because it is mustahab (recommended) and every mustahab ghusl does not suffice without wudhu.

Likewise, every mubaah (permissible) ghusl such as (showering or bathing) for cleanliness or to cool down does not suffice without wudhu. Wudhu must be made before or after it, (only) then may you perform ghusl - if wudhu is (made) beforehand.

As for you just having an ordinary shower or bath for cleanliness, to cool down or the ghusl for Jum'ah; then no (this does not suffice) without wudhu because it (i.e. ghusl for Jum'ah) is mustahab according to the majority of scholars.

The correct view is that ghusl for Jum'ah is obligatory and because of this, it is OK for you not to perform wudhu in addition to it, just like ghusl from major impurity, which is sufficient without wudhu.

The correct view is that it is obligatory. Although the majority of scholars claim it does not suffice without wudhu, this is because it is mustahab according to them and all mustahab or mubaah forms of ghusl such as showering or bathing for cleanliness or to cool down etc: these forms of ghusl do not suffice without wudhu. Wudhu must be made beforehand or afterwards.

As for (ghusl from) major impurity; if one performs it without making wudhu beforehand or afterwards it is sufficient if he intended the removal of major impurity because minor impurity is included (in this removal).

Upon this, the person takes precaution in the likes of these matters; he performs wudhu then ghusl from major impurity and does not settle with just ghusl. Although some scholars have stated it is obligatory; one takes precaution.

▪️If a woman fears harassment, can she refrain from wearing the niqāb?▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizām -may Allāh preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

Some Muslim women hold it to be obligatary to cover the face, but they don't do so because they fear they might be harassed, or even physically attacked - although nothing of such has happened to her, so is this a valid excuse for her not to wear the niqāb and cover her face?

📝 Answer:

It is not permitted for a woman to leave off covering her face merely because she fears being attacked - while this has yet to happen. Rather, this is from the deceptions of Shayṭān.

Allāh said:
{...وَمَن یَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ یَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ مَخۡرَجࣰا * وَیَرۡزُقۡهُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَحۡتَسِبُۚ...}
"And whoever is mindful of Allāh, He will make a way out for them * and provide for them from sources they could never imagine."
[Sūratuṭ-Ṭalāq 2-3]

And whoever is with Allāh, Allāh will be with him.

{إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُدَ ٰفِعُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ۗ}
"Indeed, Allāh defends those who believe."
[Sūratul-Hajj 38]

"Be mindful of Allāh and Allāh will protect you, be mindful of Allāh and you will find Him in front of you."

So, she must cover her face and observe the correct Islamic veil, as Allāh commanded:

{وَلۡیَضۡرِبۡنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُیُوبِهِنَّۖ}
"Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their ˹hidden˺ adornments."
[Sūratun-Nūr 31]

{یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّبِیُّ قُل لِّأَزۡوَ ٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاۤءِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ یُدۡنِینَ عَلَیۡهِنَّ مِن جَلَـٰبِیبِهِنَّۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ أَدۡنَىٰۤ أَن یُعۡرَفۡنَ فَلَا یُؤۡذَیۡنَۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا}
"O Prophet! Tell your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. In this way it is more likely that they will be recognized ˹as virtuous˺ and not be harassed. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

{وَإِذَا سَأَلۡتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَـٰعࣰا فَسۡـَٔلُوهُنَّ مِن وَرَاۤءِ حِجَابࣲۚ}
"And when you ˹believers˺ ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a barrier."
[Sūratul-Ahzāb 53]

{وَٱلۡقَوَ ٰعِدُ مِنَ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ ٱلَّـٰتِی لَا یَرۡجُونَ نِكَاحࣰا فَلَیۡسَ عَلَیۡهِنَّ جُنَاحٌ أَن یَضَعۡنَ ثِیَابَهُنَّ غَیۡرَ مُتَبَرِّجَـٰتِۭ بِزِینَةࣲۖ وَأَن یَسۡتَعۡفِفۡنَ خَیۡرࣱ لَّهُنَّۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمࣱ}
"As for elderly women past the age of marriage, there is no blame on them if they take off their ˹outer˺ garments, without revealing their adornments. But it is better for them if they avoid this ˹altogether˺. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing."
[Sūratun-Nūr 60]

That means, non-elderly women are obliged to cover their adornments and not leave off wearing the outer garment.

▪️Is it allowed for a male taxi driver to be alone with a female passenger?▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizām -may Allāh preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

I have a friend who works as a taxi driver. He picks up passengers; men and women, and transports them to their destination of choice. At times, he might be alone with a strange woman (khalwah) in the car. I told him that it's not permissible for a man to be alone with a strange woman in the same car, but he told me that he has a different fatwa that says, this isn't khalwa - because the car is out in the public and the windows are transparent.?

📝 Answer:

This is incorrect, rather, this is considered khalwah (seclusion with a strange woman). If he picks up a woman without a mahram in his car, this is considered khalwah. And on the journey, he will pass by places where there's no one in sight. And he is exposing himself to fitnah (temptation) by way of her, seeing as no one is watching him except Allāh.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

((لا يخلون أحدكم بامرأة إلا والشيطان ثالثهما))
"No man is secluded with a strange woman except that the devil is the third of them.

Sheikh:
Who narrated this hadīth?

(students raise their hands and the sheikh picks someone to answer)

Student:
Reported by Aḥmad on the authority of 'Umar.

Sheikh:
Yes, and the chain of narration is 'Hassan' (sound).

Therefore, if a man works as a taxi driver, then he shouldn't pick up a female passenger unless she is with her mahram.

Advice for arabic grammar students

(1/2)

Our Shaykh Abu Bilaal Al-Hadhramy- may Allah preserve him- was asked the following question on 18th Jamaada Al-Awwal 1441(13th January 2020):

📝🔹Question:

The Questioner says: What do you advise me to do now that I have become overwhelmed by the science of 'nahwu' (arabic grammar) due to 'the five nouns'?

📩🔸Answer:

(Just) the five (have overwhelmed you)? They are six according to the correct view!

Do not be overwhelmed at all. Be patient.

{اطْلُبْ وَلا تَضْجَرَنَّ مِنْ مَطْلَب
فَآفَةُ الطَّالِبِ أَنْ يَضْجَرَا}
Seek and despair not from the quest
For the seekers downfall lies in his despair

{أَمَا تَرَى الحَبْلَ بِتَكْرَارِهِ
فِيْ الصَّخْرَةِ الصَّمَّاءِ قَدْ أَثَّرَا}
See you not the rope by its repetition
Upon a solid boulder leaves a trace?

So seek (knowledge) and persevere.

《ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ 》
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous
《ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَم 》ِ
Who taught by the pen

(Al-'Alaq 96:3-4)

Recite!
and do not say 'I am not a reciter'.
Recite!
Persevere!
Allah will teach you, He is the extremely generous - the most generous - free is He from all imperfection. So be patient upon this knowledge. This knowledge requires patience. Nobody should be overwhelmed by knowledge because if a person allows himself to become overwhelmed by knowledge he will certainly have forbidden himself from much goodness.

This 'nahwu' is amongst the most important means of attaining knowledge in both supplementary and core sciences. It is a means to (understand) the foundations of tafseer, a means to understand the correct belief as well as other supplementary subjects such as the principles of fiqh [1] and fiqh in and of itself - although fiqh is considered to be a core subject nahwu is still means to understand it because nahwu certainly expands the mind, increases one in understanding and as it is said: 'it is the ax of knowledge' (i.e. a tool through which it can be deconstructed) - i.e. the knowledge of supplementary sciences not core. So upon this one must be patient.

Imam Al-Kasaaee (may Allah have mercy upon him) is used as an example on this subject. He is from the leading scholars of qur’ānic recitation and the arabic language yet if failure in nahwu is mentioned, Imam Al-Kasaaee (may Allah have mercy upon him) is mentioned too because he repeatedly failed to understand nahwu and repeatedly tried again. Every time he failed he tried again.

He experienced an element of despondency until he saw an ant carrying some things intending to ascend with them by lifting them and taking them to a place. But everytime it picked it up and sought to ascend with it, it dropped so it went back to pick it up a second time. He was amazed by its work ethic and said: ' this ant is miniscule yet does not give up on this action, (rather) it repeats. Every single time it drops it, it starts again; picks it up, raises and it falls on top if it. He said: 'By Allah I will exert myself in seeking knowledge once more. He succeeded and became a leading scholar; a peer to rival Seabaway in this knowledge. This is the bounty of Allah of which he gives it to whom he wishes.

So despondency in knowledge; this is the cause of failing (to attain) knowledge as well as failure in other affairs. So nobody should allow themselves to become despondent. Rather they should acquaint themselves with big dreams and high hopes, especially with regards to beneficial knowledge; that Allah may make him a point of return for the people, that Allah may make him, by His permission, free is He from all imperfection and Most High, a teacher, a lecturer or a a memoriser (of the Quran and Sunnah); this is what a person should acquaint himself with.

All bounty belongs Allah, he gives it to whoever he wishes. Perhaps Allah will open (your understanding) in one field of study and for someone else in three or four. (If so) Allah will have granted you something you can benefit the people with so congratulations to you.

(2/2)

Our Shayk, Muqbil, may
Allah have mercy upon him, used to repeat this advice a lot to his sons (i.e. his students) and it is amongst the most important things we benefited from his advice; that he would say: 'Oh my sons, I did not come to know myself except by nahwu', he intended by saying this: come to know yourself (through nahwu) and take great care of it because I did not come to know myself except by nahwu and I (only) benefited (from other sciences) after I benefited from nahwu.

These are remarkable words.
