The One Who Has The Determination To Forsake Sinning In Ramadhaan Alone Has Not Fully Repented

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him:

The one who has the determination to forsake sinning in the month of Ramadhaan and no other month has not fully made tawbah (repentance). Rather, he has forsaken sinning in the month of Ramadhaan. He will be rewarded if he abandoned (sinning) for Allaah and by way of exalting the symbols of Allaah (i.e. the month of Ramadhaan) and avoiding what He has made impermissible in that time, but he is not from those who has made tawbah and will be forgiven entirely.

Fasting is patience in obeying Allaah, patience in keeping away from the things forbidden by Allaah, and patience in bearing the Decree of Allaah, hunger, thirst, physical and mental weakness. So it combines all three types of patience, thus the fasting person deserves to be counted as one of the patient, and Allaah says (Interpretation of the meaning):

"...Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning."

Raising The Hands In The Qunuut

Answered by Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Hizaam - may Allaah preserve him

Question: The raising of the hands in the supplications of qunuut, is it from the Sunnah, and what is the proof for it?

Answer:

It has been legislated to raise the hands at the qunuut because it has been established in the Musnad of Imaam Ahmed on the authority of Anas Ibn Maalik - may Allaah be pleased with him - that he ﷺ raised his hands when he ﷺ performed the qunuut at times of nawaazil (calamities), he supplicated and raised his hands, so the jamhuur (majority) of the scholars said also in the witr, one raises his hands due to what is correct in an obligatory prayer is also correct in a voluntary prayer.

The saying of 'Aameen' is established in the Saheeh of Ibn Khuzaymah from the Hadeeth of Ibn 'Abbaas - may Allaah be pleased with them both - that he ﷺ supplicated at the qunuut of the nawaazil and those behind him said 'Aameen.'

As for the qunuut of the witr in what relates to textual evidence from the Prophet ﷺ that he supplicated and raised his hands and those behind him said 'Aameen', nothing in this affair has been established from the Prophet ﷺ.

The Ahaadeeth which are found in the two Saheeh's and other than it from 'Aaishah - may Allaah be pleased with her, Ibn 'Abbaas, Zayd Ibn Khaalid Al-Juhani, Ibn Mas'uud, Huthayfah and many others have narrated the description of the night prayer of the Prophet ﷺ and not one of them mentioned that he ﷺ performed the qunuut of witr.

So that which is closer to the Sunnah is that the qunuut of witr is performed seldomly, especially in Ramadhaan due to it being performed by the Companions - may Allaah be pleased with them.

As for the Hadeeth of Al-Hasan Ibn 'Alee that the Prophet ﷺ taught him to say some words in the qunuut of witr:

اللهم أهدني فيمن هديت وعافيني فيمن عافيته...

There has been some differing in regards to the wording of the Hadeeth. Shu'bah Ibn Al-Hajjaaj has narrated the Hadeeth with the wording "He has taught me a supplication to supplicate with" meaning generally, and with Abuu Ishaaq As-Sabe'ee the addition of "in the qunuut of witr" and Shu'bah is more stronger in memorisation than Abuu Ishaaq.

So that which is more apparent in correctness is that this is a general supplication which is supplicated with at any time, in the prostration and in the times where supplications are answered and in the qunuut and in other than it.

It has been established from the Companions that they performed the qunuut and particularly in the last 15 days of Ramadhaan. It has been established from Ibn 'Umar and likewise Ibn Mas'uud that they performed the qunuut, so there is no harm in performing the qunuut, but that which is clear from the evidences is that he ﷺ did not perform the qunuut.

And it is possible that the statements and fataawaa of the Companions could be understood to be that he ﷺ performed it seldomly or that it points to that it's permissible.

Why Does Evil Still Occur In Ramadhaan If The Devils Are Chained?

Al-Qurtubee, may Allaah have mercy upon him:

"If it is said: How is it that we see an abundance of evil and sins occurring in Ramadhaan; if the devils were chained up this would not occur?

The response: They are only chained away from those who fast (correctly) fulfilling the conditions of the fast and being mindful of its etiquette.

Or it is said that those who are chained are some of the devils; i.e., the rebellious ones, and not all of them, as has been previously mentioned within some of the other narrations.

Or, it is said that what is intended is that evil is minimized in (Ramadhaan); and this is something well-known. For the occurrence of that (evil/sins) is less within than it is in other months.

Hence, them all being chained up does not necessitate that evil or sins will not occur. For there are other reasons besides the devils which cause this; such as despicable souls and evil ways, as well as human devils."

Brothers only
Questioner

There is a question from the brothers from London. They say most of the mosques pray the isha prayer before the entering of its correct time, they pray around 10.30pm however it comes in around 11pm. What is upon them as they don't want to miss the opportunity of praying taraweeh in the masjid?

Shaykh salih As-Sindee حفظه الله تعالى professor at the Islamic university of madinah and teacher in masjid an-nabawi
:
Firstly it's not permissible to pray the isha prayer out of its correct timing except for the one who made the intention to combine the prayers, also combining the prayers is not for every person and can't be done without a vaild reason. Umar may Allah be pleased with him said the one that combines between the prayers without a vaild reason is from the كبائر (major sins).
Its upon them to pray upon the correct time, even if one says 'allahu akbar' and enters the prayer a second before the correct entering of the time of prayer, his salah is not vaild.
Upon them is to pray in a place were they pray within the correct time if Allah makes it easy for them, if not then to pray at home with some brothers then go and catch what is left of taraweeh in the masjid or pray at home.
