It Is Obligatory Upon Us To Follow The Way Of The Salaf

Allaah, Subhaanahu wa Ta’aalaa, commanded us in the Quraan:

وَٱتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ مَنْ أَنَابَ إِلَىَّۚ

"...and follow the path of him who turns to Me in repentance and in obedience."

[Al-Quraan 31:15]

Al-Imaam Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him:

"All of the companions turned to Allaah in repentance; it is obligatory to follow their way, statements, and creed..."

[I'laam Al-Muwaqqi'een, Vol. 4, Pg. 120]

(The Salaf us-Saalih are the companions (Sahaabah) and the two generations after them (Taabi'uun and Taabi'u-Taabi'een).

What to say after Witr prayer:

After Witr prayer, it's recommended to say:

سُـبْـحَـانَ الْـمَـلِـكِ الْـقُـدُّوسِ

Subḥānal-Malikil-Quddūs

"Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy.” (Three times)

It is reported by Aḥmad (3/406) and others on the authority of 'AbdurRaḥmān ibn Abzā -may Allāh be pleased with him- that the Prophet ﷺ used to recite in Witr, "Sabbiḥisma Rabbikal-A’lā" [i.e., Sūrah Al-A’lā (87) in the first rak'ah], "Qul yā ayyuhal-kāfirūn" [i.e., Sūrah al-Kāfirūn (109) in the second], and "Qul Huwallāhu aḥad" [i.e., Sūrah Al-Ikhlāṣ (112) in the third rak'ah]. Then after the taslīm he would say "Subḥānal-Malikil-Quddūs", "Subḥānal-Malikil-Quddūs", "Subḥānal-Malikil-Quddūs", three times, raising his voice on the third time."

This ḥadīth is authentic. It was graded ṣaḥīḥ by Sheikh Muqbil Al-Wādi'ī in 'Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥul Musnad', no. 890."

Having The Pre-Dawn Meal (As-Suhuur) As Late As Possible [The Sunnah Of Fasting]

Saleem Ibn ‘Ubayd, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reported, “I used to stay in the house of Abuu Bakr. One night, he prayed for as long as Allaah willed him to. He then said [to me], ‘Go and see if al-fajr has started,’ so I went, returned and said, ‘Whiteness has risen in the sky.’ So he prayed for as long as Allaah willed, then said [again], ‘Go and see if al-fajr has started.’ I went out, returned and said, ‘[The light] is spreading out and becoming reddish,’ to which he said, ‘Now bring me my drink (i.e. my pre-dawn meal, as-suhuur).’”

Breaking The Fast As Soon As The Sun Sets [The Sunnah Of Fasting]

Sa’eed Ibnul-Musayyib, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reports from his father,

“I was once sitting with ʿUmar when a group of people arrived from Ash-Shaam. ʿUmar enquired about them and how they were; he asked, ‘Do the people of Ash-Shaam hasten to break the fast.’ He said, ‘Yes.’ [ʿUmar] said, ‘They will not cease to remain upon good as long as they do this, and do not wait for the stars [to come out] as the people of Iraaq do.’”

[ʿAbdur-Razzaaq As-San’aanee, Al-Musannaf, 4:225]

‘Amr Ibn Maymuun Al-Awdee, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reports, “The Companions of Muḥammad – Allaah's peace and blessings be upon him – used to be the quickest to break the fast and the slowest in taking the pre-dawn meal.”

[ʿAbdur-Razzaaq As-San’aanee, Al-Musannaf, Pg. 226]

Ibnul-Musayyib, may Allaah have mercy upon him, also reports that ʿUmar wrote to the commanders of the various regions, ‘Do not be of the procrastinators when breaking the fast, and nor of those who wait for the stars before they start praying [al-maghrib].’

[ʿAbdur-Razzaaq As-San’aanee, Al-Musannaf, Pg. 225]

Muusaa Ibn Anas, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reports that Anas [Ibn Maalik] used to have his slave-girl go to the top of his house, instructing her, ‘When the horizon becomes even (evenly lit, marking sunset), tell me.’

[Ibn Abee Shaybah, Al-Musannaf, 2:430]

Abuu At-Tiyaah Ad-Daba’ee, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reports that “he used to break fast with Ibn ‘Abbaas during Ramadhaan. When evening approached he would send a girl from his household to the roof [to look out], and when the sun set he would make the call to prayer (athaan). He would eat with us, and when he had finished, the call for the commencement of prayer {iqaamah) would be given, and he would pray, and we would pray with him.”

One Benefit a day (Day 5)
Is one considered a show-off for beautifying their voice when reciting in front of people?

Sheikh Uthaymīn, may Allāh have mercy on him, said:

On the authority of Abū Mūsā Al-Ash'arī -may Allāh be pleased with him- that:

The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said to me, 'If you were to see me, as I was listening to your recitation [of the Qur'ān] last night [you would have been delighted]. You are in fact endowed with a sweet voice like that of [Prophet] Dāwūd himself." I said: O Messenger of Allāh, had I been aware of your presence, I would have beautified it even more.

In this is evidence that - if a person beautifies their voice while reciting Qur'ān for others to enjoy and take delight in listening to it, then that is okay, and it is not considered showing off. In fact, this (i.e. beautifying the voice) is what attracts [people] to listen to the Words of Allāh the Almighty, so much so that they find delight in that.

The Imām Ibn As-Salāh -may Allāh have mercy upon him said: Reciting The Qurān is an honour Allāh has bestowed upon mankind. The angels have not been give that [honour] so they are ever eager to hear it from man. (End of speech)

Abū Hurreira (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated from The Prophet ﷺ that the angels of the night and the angels of the day gather for the fajr prayer then recited the saying of Allāh:

《وَقُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِۖ إِنَّ قُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا 》
And the Qurān of Fajr, indeed the Qurān of fajr is ever-witnessed.

1 Benefit a day (Day 14):
Jumu'ah is most people's favourite day of the week; the evil doers yearn for it to satisfy their desires, whereas the good doers long for it to please The Almighty
__

The following is an abridged translation of a benefit transmitted by Sheikh Faysal Al-Hashidi hafidhahullah
----------------

Do you want the reward of fasting & praying hundreds of years in just a few minutes?!

If so, read the greatest authentic hadith on the virtues of deeds; a hadeeth which the people of knowledge said about it: “We do not know a hadith of the Prophet ﷺ more rewarding than this hadith.”

Imam At-Tirmidhi rahimahullah said: “Some of the Imams said, we have not heard a Saheeh Hadeeth in the Shari’ah that includes such a reward.”
[Tuhfatul Ahwadhi (3/5)]

Ibnul Hajar Al-Haythami rahimahullah said: “It was said there is nothing authentic in the Sunnah than contains more reward than this, so let one pay attention to it.”
[Tuhfat al-Muhtaaj (2/471)]

Here's the Hadeeth:

On the authority of Aws ibn Aws Ath-Thaqafi (radhiyallahu anhu) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying:

“Whoever takes a complete bath on Friday then goes very early to the Khutbah, walking and not riding, sits close to the Imam, listens and does not speak or keep himself busy then for every is the reward equivalent to a year of fasting and praying.”

[Collected by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi; authenticated by Sheikh Albani in Saheeh Al-Jaami' As-Sagheer' no. 6405]

Did you pay attention to the hadeeth

▪️Every step on your way to the masjid to perform Friday prayer is equivalent to the reward of a year of fasting and praying!

▪️One step equals fasting and praying for 365 days!

▪️So if there are 100 steps between you and the masjid, it is as if you fasted and stood for 100 years, and the more steps you take the number of years increases

But this reward is subject to five conditions:

1⃣- Taking a full BATH

2⃣- Going to the masjid EARLY

3⃣- WALKING to the masjid

4⃣- Sitting CLOSE to the Khateeb

5⃣- Listening to the Khutbah in SILENCE

...

This is from the grace of Allah upon us that He has made this relatively easy act of worship carry such a great reward and made it recurring every week so that every Muslim is able to realise it.

EXERT YOURSELF THROUGHOUT THE LAST TEN - NOT JUST THE ODD NIGHTS❗️

Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah -raḥimahullāh- was asked:

When should we look out for Laylatul Qadr?

He responded (paraphrasing):

“Laylatul Qadr occurs during the last ten nights of Ramaḍhān, as is authentically established from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:

((تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ)).

“Look out for Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramaḍhān.”
[Reported by Bukhāri & Muslim on the authority of ‘Ā'ishah -raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhā]

And In the version of Bukhāri, he ﷺ specifically said:

((تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْوِتْرِ مِنَ الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ)).

"Look out for Laylatul Qadr during the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramaḍhān."

However, it's important to note that there are two methods of calculating the odd nights:

1⃣ - THE FIRST is to count the days that have already passed; such that Laytul Qadr falls on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night of Ramaḍhān.

or

2⃣ - THE SECOND is to count the days that remain, as the Prophet ﷺ said:

((الْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي تَاسِعَةٍ تَبْقَى، فِي سَابِعَةٍ تَبْقَى، فِي خَامِسَةٍ تَبْقَى)).

“Look out for the Laylatul Qadr during the REMAINING TEN NIGHTS of Ramaḍhān; on the night when nine or seven or five nights remain.”
[Reported by Bukhāri on the authority of Ibn Abbās -raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhumā]

So according to this method, if Ramaḍhān consisted of 30 days -and only Allāh knows if this will be the case- LAYLATUL QADR MIGHT FALL ON ONE OF THE EVEN NIGHTS, because the 22nd will be the night when nine remains, the 24th will be the night when seven remains, and the 26th will be the night when five remains.

This was the understanding of Abū Sa‘īd Al-Khudri -raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhu-:

Muslim reports that Abun Naḍhr enquired:

“O Abū Sa‘īd, you know more than us about (these) numbers. He said: Yes, indeed we have better right than you. I said: What is this ninth, seventh, and fifth? He said: When 21 (nights are over) and the 22nd begins, it is the ninth. When 23 (nights) are over, that which follows (i.e. the 24th) is the seventh. When 25 nights are over, what follows (i.e. the 26th) is the fifth.”

If, however, Ramaḍhān consists of 29 days, then these two forms of calculations will be exactly the same.

This being the case, it is only befitting that the believer works hard throughout the last ten nights of Ramaḍhān - NOT JUST THE ODD NIGHTS.

This was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ as ‘Ā’ishah -raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhā- said:

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ - أي العشر الأواخر من رمضان - شَدَّ مِئْزَرَهُ، وَأَحْيَا لَيْلَهُ، وَأَيْقَظَ أَهْلَهُ‏.‏

“With the start of the last ten days of Ramaḍhān, the Prophet ﷺ would tighten his waist sheet (i.e. work hard and refrain from sexual relations), pray throughout the night, and he would also wake his wives.”
[Reported by Bukhāri & Muslim]

SIX DIFFERENT WAYS TO OFFER THE NIGHT PRAYER

1⃣ - Praying a single rak’ah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Witr is a rak'ah at the end of the night.”
[Reported by Muslim on the authority of Ibn 'Umar -raḍhiyallāhu 'anhu-]

And in the ḥadīth of Ḥudhayfah raḍhiyallāhu 'anhu the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated this practically;
https://sunnah.com/muslim/6/242

2⃣ - Praying nine consecutively with tashahhud in the eighth, then without making tasleem you stand for the ninth. Upon completion you make tasleem and offer two separate rak’ahs while seated (you should stand to perform rukoo') = 11 Rak'ahs in total
https://sunnah.com/muslim/6/168

3⃣ - Praying seven consecutively with tashahhud in the sixth, then without making tasleem you stand for the seventh. Upon completion you make tasleem and offer two separate rak’ahs while seated (you should stand to perform rukoo') = 9 Rak'ahs in total.

NOTE: this occurred when the Prophet ﷺ grew old. See previous link.

4⃣ - Praying 10 rak’ahs in pairs, then offering one rak’ah separately = 11 Rak'ahs in total.

This is the most common method due to the statement of Prophet ﷺ:
((‏صلاة الليل مثنى مثنى، فإذا خفت الصبح فأوتر بواحدة‏))
“The night prayers consist of pairs, but if you fear that morning is near, then pray one Rak'ah as Witr.”
[Bukhāri and Muslim]

5⃣ - Praying 8 rak’ahs in pairs, then five consecutive rak’ahs with one tasleem = 13 rak'ahs in total.
https://sunnah.com/muslim/6/149

NOTE: The first two rak’ahs in this method are either the two voluntary rak’ahs after ‘Ishā, or two introductory rak’ahs with which one begins the Night Prayer as stated by Sheikh Albāni -raḥimahullāh. It's also possible that the two extra rak’ahs are in fact the two voluntary rak’ahs for Fajr as mentioned in some of the narrations.
https://sunnah.com/bulugh/2/282

6⃣ - Praying four consecutive rak’ahs with one tasleem, then another four consecutive rak’ahs in the same manner, then three consecutive rak’ahs with one tashahhud in the final rak‘ah = 11 Rak'ahs in total
https://sunnah.com/bulugh/2/281

NOTE: in the last two methods (5 & 6) you can offer the final three/five rak’ahs with one tasleem at the end, or make tasleem between every two rak’ahs.
____

These are the methods reported from the Prophet ﷺ, although it's permissible for one to pray any odd number of rak'ahs between one to 11/13; the more the better as An-Nawawi mentions:

«قد سبق أن مذهبنا أن أقله ركعة، وأكثره إحدى عشرة، وفي وجه ثلاث عشرة، وما بين ذلك جائز، وكلما قرب من أكثره كان أفضل، وبهذا قال جمهور العلماء من الصحابة والتابعين»
[Sharḥul Muhadh-dhab (4/21)]

One should avoid praying more than eleven rak'ahs a night because the best guidance is the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ.

Ā'ishah -raḍhiyallāhu 'anhā- said: “The Prophet ﷺ did not offer more than eleven rak'ah (during the night prayer) in Ramaḍhān or in any other month.”
[Reported by Bukhāri & Muslim]

Bear in mind, Ā'ishah radhiyallahu anha is unmatched in her knowledge in this field, as Ibn Abbās confirmed when he said to Sa‘d ibn Hishām: “Shall I not direct you to the most knowledgeable person on earth with regards to the Prophet's night prayer (Witr)? He (Hishām) asked, Who? So he said, 'Ā'ishah. Go to her and ask her, then return back to me and inform me of her answer.
[Muslim (746)]
