Al-Baqarah 2:62
English - Tafsir ibn kathir
Faith and doing Righteous Deeds equals Salvation in all Times
Allah says;
Verily, those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians (Sabi'in), whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and does righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.
After Allah described the condition - and punishment - of those who defy His commands, fall into His prohibitions and transgress set limits by committing prohibited acts, He stated that the earlier nations who were righteous and obedient received the rewards for their good deeds. This shall be the case, until the Day of Judgment. Therefore, whoever follows the unlettered Messenger and Prophet shall acquire eternal happiness and shall neither fear from what will happen in the future nor become sad for what has been lost in the past.
Similarly, Allah said,
No doubt! Verily, the Awliya of Allah, no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve. (10:62)
The angels will proclaim to the dying believers, as mentioned,
Verily, those who say:"Our Lord is Allah (alone)," and then they stand firm, on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) (saying):"Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise which you have been promised!" (41:30)
The Meaning of Mu'min, or Believer
Ali bin Abi Talhah narrated from Ibn Abbas, about,
(Verily, those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day) that Allah revealed the following Ayah afterwards,
And whoever seeks religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers. (3:85).
This statement by Ibn Abbas indicates that Allah does not accept any deed or work from anyone, unless it conforms to the Law of Muhammad that is, after Allah sent Muhammad. Before that, every person who followed the guidance of his own Prophet was on the correct path, following the correct guidance and was saved.
Why the Jews were called

(We have Hudna (we repent, go back and return) unto You), (7:156).

Why the Jews were called
Yahud
The Jews are the followers of Prophet Musa, who used to refer to the Tawrah for judgment. Yahud is a word that means,
repenting', just as Musa said,
(We have Hudna (we repent, go back and return) unto You), (7:156).
Why the Christians were called Nasara
Allah said;
"Who will be my helpers in Allah's cause" Al-Hawariyyun said:"We are the helpers of Allah." (61:14)
It was said that;
they were called
Nasara', because they inhabited a land called An-Nasirah (Nazareth), as Qatadah, Ibn Jurayj and Ibn Abbas were reported to have said, Allah knows best.
Nasara is certainly plural for Nasran.
When Allah sent Muhammad as the Last and Final Prophet and Messenger to all of the Children of Adam, mankind was required to believe in him, obey him and refrain from what he prohibited them; those who do this are true believers. The Ummah of Muhammad was called Mu'minin' (believers), because of the depth of their faith and certainty, and because they believe in all of the previous Prophets and matters of the Unseen.The Sabi'un or Sabians

id bin Jubayr.
They (others) say that;
the Sabians are a sect among the People of the Book who used to read the Zabur (Psalms), others say that they are a people who worshipped the angels or the stars.
It appears that the closest opinion to the truth, and Allah knows best, is Mujahid's statement and those who agree with him like Wahb bin Munabbih, that;
the Sabians are neither Jews nor Christians nor Majus nor polytheists. Rather, they did not have a specific religion that they followed and enforced, because they remained living according to their Fitrah (instinctual nature). This is why the idolators used to call whoever embraced Islam a Sabi', meaning, that he abandoned all religions that existed on the earth.Some scholars stated that;
the Sabians are those who never received a message by any Prophet.

Then he [Salih (Saleh)] turned from them, and said: "O my people! I have indeed conveyed to you the Message of my Lord, and have given you good advice but you like not good advisers."
Al-Quraan 7:79
Tafseer Ibn Katheer
These are the words of admonishment that Salih conveyed to his people after Allaah destroyed them for defying Him, rebelling against Him, refusing to accept the truth, avoiding guidance, and preferring misguidance instead. Salih said these words of admonishment and criticism to them after they perished, and they heard him (as a miracle for Prophet Salih from Allaah).
Similarly, it is recorded in the Two Sahihs that;
After the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) defeated the disbelievers in the battle of Badr, he remained in that area for three days, and then rode his camel, which was prepared for him during the latter part of the night. He went on until he stood by the well of Badr (where the corpses of the disbelievers were thrown) and said,
"O Abu Jahl bin Hisham! O Utbah bin Rabiah! O Shaybah bin Rabiah! Did you find what your Lord has promised you (of torment) to be true, for I found what my Lord promised me (of victory) to be true."
'Umar said to him, "O Allaah's Messenger! Why do you speak to a people who have rotted?"
He said,

Similarly, Prophet Salih, peace be upon him, said to his people,

The Quraan Is To Be Read With Contemplation And To Be Acted Upon
The great scholar Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, once wrote:
If people only knew the great value of reciting the Quraan with reflection, then they would devote themselves to it above anything else. For when one recites with contemplation, when he comes across a Verse which contains something needed to rectify his heart, he would repeat that Verse, perhaps as many as one hundred times or even for the entire night.
For reciting a single Verse with contemplation and understanding is better, more beneficial for one’s heart, and more likely to bring about an increase in eemaan (faith) and tasting the sweetness of the Quraan than reciting the entire Quraan without reflection or understanding.
This used to be the practice of the Salaf, that one of them might repeat a single Verse until the morning came. It has also been authentically attributed to the Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wa 'alaa aalihi wa sallam) that he stood in the night prayer until the morning came repeating a single Verse, which was:
(Interpretation of the meaning)
"If You punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."
[Al-Quraan 5:118]
For reciting the Quraan with contemplation is the very basis of the heart’s rectification.
In this same vein, Ibn Mas’uud said, “Do not recite the Quraan rapidly without pause like the recitation of poetry or while babbling it quickly out of hastiness. (Rather) stop when you come to one of its amazements, and let it move your heart, and do not be bothered if you do not reach the end of the Chapter (Suurah).”
Abuu Ayyuub relayed that Abuu Hamzah said, “I said to Ibn ‘Abbaas, ‘I am very quick in my reading, I read the entire Quraan in three days.’ He said to me, ‘For me to read a single Suurah and to contemplate it and recite it at a slow measured pace is more dear to me than to recite the Quraan as you do.'”
And there are two types of contemplating over the Quraan:
1) Contemplating over its contents in order to understand the meanings which your Lord intended,
2) Contemplating over those meanings which invite the reader to reflect and ponder them.
The first is contemplating over what the Quraan shows and indicates, while the second is oriented towards what that person needs. The first is contemplating over the Verse itself, while the second is contemplating over the effects of the Verse on the person.

[Al-Quraan 5:118]

ng these lines, Allaah has revealed the Quraan for it to be contemplated, pondered over, and acted upon, not for it to be merely recited while the people turn away from its meanings. Al-Hasan Al-Basree said, “The Quraan was revealed to be acted upon, but these people treat reciting it as the action it requires.”
