*The Virtue of Fasting the Day of ‘Ashoora*

*Sheikh Muhammad ibn Hizaam* حفظه الله wrote:

“Fasting ‘Ashoora

It comes in the Saheeh Muslim from Abu Qatadah (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (ﷺ) was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Ashoora. He said: *“It expiates the sins of the past year”*

An-Nawawi (رحمه الله تعالى) said in Sharh Saheeh Muslim (8/4): “The Scholars agreed that fasting ‘Ashoora is Sunnah“.

They differed regarding day of ‘Ashoora. The majority of the Scholars of the Salaf and those who came after them were of the opinion that *‘Ashoora is the tenth of Muharram.*

It was said it is the ninth day. They said: it is the opinion of Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) and they used as evidence what is in Saheeh Muslim:

Hakam b. al-‘Araj reported: I went to Ibn ‘Abbas (Allaah be Pleased with both of them) and he was reclining using his mantle as a pillow near the fountain of Zamzam. I said to him: Tell me about fasting on Ashura. He said: When you see the new moon of Muharram then count the (days) and observe fast on the 9th. I said to him: Is it how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed the fast? He said: Yes.

What is apparent is that Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) intended by fasting the ninth to oppose the Jews, not that ‘Ashoora is the ninth due to the evidence of what came in Saheeh Muslim:

That when the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) fasted on the day of ‘Ashoora and commanded that it should he observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him:Messenger of Allaah, it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem. Thereupon the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said: *When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the ninth. But the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) died before the advent of the next year.*

And what supports that is what is established from Sa’eed ibn Mansoor with a Saheeh chain as is in the book al-Iqtidaa as-Siraat al-Mustaqeem from Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him): *“Fast the ninth and tenth, oppose the Jews”*

[See: Sharh Saheeh Muslim (8/11-12), Fath (no. 2008), and Tafseer al-Qurtubi (1/391)]

🔗 *Combining Between the Ninth and Tenth Day*

It is benefited from the Hadith from Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) in the previous issue that it is recommended to fast the ninth with the tenth in opposition to the Jews. The majority of the Scholars recommended it. From them is Shafi’ee and Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy upon them)

[See: Sharh Muslim (8/12-23) and Tawdeeh al-Ahkaam (3/201)]

📜 *Wisdom Behind the Command to Fast ‘Ashoora*📜

In the Saheeh on the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that:

That the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) arrived in Medina and found the Jews observing fast on the day of ”Ashoora. The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said to them: *What is the (significance) of this day that you observe fast on it?* They said: It is the day of great (significance) when Allaah سبحانه و تعالى delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) s
aid: *We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have; so Allaah’s Messenger (ﷺ) observed fast (on the day of ‘Ashoora), and gave orders that it should be observed.*

[See: Sharh Muslim (8/9)]

Note:

It was mentioned in the previous Hadith: *“It expiates the sins of the past”*. What is apparent is that fasting the day of ‘Ashoora expiates the minor and major sins. However, the majority of Scholars are of the opinion that it does not expiate the major sins. If one fasts the day of Arafah and the day of ‘Ashoora, then they are not better than fasting Ramadan nor are they better than the five obligatory prayers.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

*The five (daily) prayers and from one Friday prayer to the (next) Friday prayer, and from Ramadhan to Ramadhan are expiations for the (sins) committed in between (their intervals) provided one shuns the major sins.* [Reported by Muslim from the authority Abu Hurariah (may Allah be pleased with him)]

This is the statement of the majority of the Scholars and it is the more correct opinion.

[See: Sharh Muslim (6/383) and Tawdeeh al-Ahkam (3/201)]”

Such are the people of the truth and they are Al-Muttaqun (pious - see V. 2:2).

◾️The Dowry amount the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave to his wives◾️

Answered by Shaykh Abu Hamza Hassan bin Muhammed Ba Shu'ayb - may Allah preserve him - on the 14th, Muharram, 1441H

📝🔹Question:

How much did the Prophet ﷺ give of Dowry to his wives, if it was to be (calculated) in Yemeni currency?

📩🔸Answer:

Its been narrated in the Hadith of Abu Salama bin 'Abdi Rahman, that he said:

“I asked 'Aisha, the wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ-What was the Dowry amount of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?
She said “The Dowry for his wives was twelve 'uqiyah and one an-nashu. She said: Do you know what an-nashu is? I said: No. She said: It’s half of ‘uqiyah, and it amounts to five hundred dirhams, and that was the Dowry given by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to his wives."
[Sahih Muslim]

-500 dirhams is equivalent to 1487.5 grams of silver. It’s value today is approximately 250,000 Yemeni riyals-

◾️Allah will answer to the one who supplicates with the supplication of Prophet Yunus ﷺ◾️

Answered by Shaykh Abu Hamza Hassan bin Muhammed Ba Shu'ayb - may Allah preserve him - on the 18th, Safar, 1439H

📝🔹Question:

Is it permissible to supplicate with the supplication of Yunus ﷺ:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

(Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innee kuntu minal thaalimeen)
“There is no God who has the right to be worshipped except You, Glory be to You, distant are You from any imperfections”

📩🔸Answer:

Yes it’s permissible.

As It comes in the Hadith narrated by Sa’d bin abi Waqaas, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“The supplication of Dhun-Nun (Prophet Yunus ﷺ) when he supplicated, while in the belly of the whale was:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

-There is none worthy of worship except You, free of any deficiencies and glory be to You, Indeed, I have been of the transgressors-

For indeed, no Muslim supplicates with it for anything, ever, except Allah responds to him.”

▪️We are in need of offering our daily supplications more than our need for food & drink▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam -may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

The questioner says: Can you offer some advice to those who are busied from performing the after prayer invocations as well as the morning and evening supplications?

📝 Answer:

We advise him to focus on doing the supplications, as it is sustenance which gives life to the heart; the morning and evening supplications, as well as the invocations said after the prayer are a sustenance for your heart.

You are in need of these supplications more than your bodies need for food and drink, so do not busy yourself from offering the after prayer supplications, nor the morning and evening invocations. Likewise, when Adhan is called, repeat after the Muadhin.

So we advise you to give concern to these supplications more than your concern for food and drink.

When the heart is given its sustenance, a person remains lively the whole day; if he is regular in his supplications, he will be lively in seeking knowledge and in his worship, and his dealings with people will improve; his dealings with his wife, kids, neighbours and brothers will all improve. Whereas, if he were to fall short in that, his dealings with others will worsen and he will feel tightness in his chest.

So pay great attention to safeguarding the supplications.

And I would like to request from my brothers that they do not disturb me from reciting the morning supplications after the Fajr prayer. If anyone needs anything, they should wait until after sunrise.

The Problem Is With You

Ibnul-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, related from Al-Jariri:

“I was told of a man from the children of Israel who had a need that he wanted fulfilled by Allaah. So, he engaged in constant worship and then asked Allaah for his need.

When he did not see that his need was fulfilled, he spent the night blaming himself, saying: 'O self! What is wrong with you that is preventing your need from being fulfilled?'

And he spent the night sad and holding himself to account, saying: 'By Allaah, the problem is not with my Lord. Rather, the problem is with myself,' and he remained in such a state of holding himself responsible until his need was finally taken care of.”
