Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said, “The most excellent day of the week is the day of Friday, by the agreement of the scholars and the most excellent day of the year is the day of An-Nahr, and some of them said that it is the day of ’Arafah. However, the first opinion is the correct one, since it is related in the Sunan collections that the Prophet (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said (translated meaning), “The most excellent days with Allaah is the day of An-Nahr, then the day of Al-Qarr (the day that the Muslims reside in Minaa).” [Sunan Abee Daawud, No. 1765. Authenticated by shaykh Al-Albaanee in Irwaa'ul-Ghaleel, No. 2018].
[Refer to Majmuu'ul-Fataawaa, 25/288].
The day of An-Nahr is also known as ’Eedul-Adhaa (the festivity of sacrifice) and is one of the two major festivals that Allaah has granted to this ummah. Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, ‘The Prophet (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) came to Al-Madeenah and the people of Al-Madeenah had – since the times of jaahiliyyah (pre-lslamic ignorance) – two days which they marked out for play and amusement. So the Prophet (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said (translated meaning), ‘I came to you, and you had two days of play and amusement in the times of jaahiliyyah. But Allaah has replaced them with something better for you: The day of Al-Adhaa (sacrificing) and the day of Al-Fitr (ending the Fast).”
[Ahmad, 3/103. Authenticated by Al-Haafith Ibn Hajr in Buluughul-Maraam, No. 398].
The Prophet (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) also said (translated meaning), “The day of Al-Fitr, and the day of An-Nahr, and the days of At-Tashreeq (the three days after An-Nahr) are our days of ’Eed (festivity); and they are days of eating and drinking.” [Ahmad, No. 1945. Authenticated by Al-Albaanee in Saheehul-Jaami’, No. 8192].
’Eedul-Adhaa is a day in which the Muslims slaughter a camel, cow, sheep or goat, in commemoration of the sacrifice of Ibraaheem, peace be upon him. And this sacrifice is an obligation upon all those who have the means to do so, according to the most correct opinion of the scholars.
[As explained by Ibn Taymiyyah in Majmuu’ul-Fataawaa, 23/162-164].
The basis of this is the Prophet’s (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) saying (translated meaning), “One who has the ability to sacrifice, but chooses not to do so, should not approach our place of (’Eed) prayer.” [Sunan Ibn Maajah, No. 3123. Graded hasan by shaykh Al-Albaanee in Takhreej Mushkilatul-Fiqr].
And his (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) saying (translated meaning), “Whosoever sacrificed before the prayer, then let him do so again. But whosoever has not sacrificed, then let him sacrifice.” [Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree, No. 5562 and Saheeh Muslim, No. 1960].
So this order refers to those who have the ability to do so, and Allaah knows best.
As regards those who intend to sacrifice - normally the head of the household – then they are prohibited from cutting their hair or nails, starting from the first day of Thul-Hijjah up until after the sacrifice. Allaah’s Messenger (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said (translated meaning), “When the ten days start, and one of you intends to sacrifice, then let him not cut his hair or his nails.” [Saheeh Muslim, No. 1977].
Glorifying Allaah With The Takbeer
From the day of ’Arafah (the 9th of Thul-Hijjah) up until the ’Asr prayer on the thirteen day, are days in which the takbeeraat (saying Allaahu Akbar) should be said. Imaam Al-Khattaabee, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said,
“The wisdom behind saying the takbeeraat in these days is that in the times of jaahiliyyah (pre-lslamic ignorance), they used to slaughter for their tawaagheet (false objects of worship). So the takbeeraat were prescribed in order to indicate that the act of slaughtering is directed to Allaah alone, and by mentioning only His, the Mighty and Majestic, Name.” [Fathul-Baaree, 21/586].

Shaykhul-lslaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said, “All praise be to Allaah. The most correct saying concerning the takbeer – that which the majority of the Salaf (pious predecessors), and the scholars from the Companions and imaams were upon – is to begin making the takbeer from Fajr (dawn) on the day of ’Arafah, up until the last day of At-Tashreeq (the thirteenth of Thul-Hijjah), after every prayer.”
[Majmuu’ul-Fataawaa, 24/220].
However, what seems more correct is not to restrict the takbeeraat to being just after every prayer, as Al-Haafith Ibn Hajr pointed out in Fathul-Baaree, 21/587.
Ibn Abee Shaybah relates, “That ’Alee, may Allaah be pleased with him, used to make the takbeer beginning after the Fajr prayer on the day of ’Arafah, up until after the ’Asr Prayer on the last day of At-Tashreeq.” [Al-Musannaf, 2/1/2. Authenticated by shaykh Al-Albaanee in Al-lrwaa‘, 31/125].
As regards the actual wording of the takbeeraat, then nothing authentic has been related from the Prophet (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam). However, certain wordings have been authentically related from a group of Companions such as the wording of 'Abdullaah Ibn Mas’uud, may Allaah be pleased with him, who would say, “Allaah is great, Allaah is great. None has the right to be worshipped except Him, and Allaah is great, Allaah is great and to Him belongs all praise. [Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar,, Laa ilaaha illAllaah, wAllaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar wa lillaahil-hamd]” [Ibn Abee Shaybah with an authentic chain of narration].
Refer back to Fathul-'Allaam (a research on Buluughul-Maraam) by shaykh Muhammad Hizaam, second volume, page 197 and Miskul-Khitaam (an explanation of 'Umdatul-Ahkaam) by shaykh Zaayid Al-Wusaabee, second volume pages 114 - 115 for more on this topic.
Unfortunately, many Muslims have neglected the takbeer established from our Salaf (pious predecessors) and have instead resorted to additions which have no basis at all.
Al-Haafith Ibn Hajr, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said, “Indeed, additions have been invented upon this day, which have no basis at all.” [Fathul-Baaree, 2/536].
And may Allaah have mercy upon the one who said,
“Every good is in following the Salaf; And every evil is in the innovations of the late-comers.”
And all praise is for Allaah, Lord of the worlds. And may Allaah extol and send blessings and peace upon our Leader, Muhammad, and upon his Family, his Companions, and all those who follow them until the final Day.

Benefits Regarding Dhul-Hijjah
Allaah swore by the 10 nights of Dhul-Hijjah as Allaah, the Most High, said:
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah).
[Al-Quraan 89:2]
Ibn Katheer, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said about this Verse:
"The ten nights' refers to the (first) ten of Dhul-Hijjah. This was said by Ibn `Abbaas, Ibn Zubayr, Mujaahid and others among the Salaf and the latter generations."
Ibnul-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:
"Verily the dawn of the ten nights is a time period that contains actions that are magnified by rituals & magnified places, and it is from the rites of Allaah which entails humility of a servant to his Lord for verily Hajj and its rites is a worship solely for Allaah which necessitates humility and submission to his his greatness, and these traits are the opposite of the traits of the people of 'Aad, Thamuud & Pharaoh from that which they had from haughtiness, arrogance and pomposity.
Those nations were a transgressive people who were too prideful to carry out the commands of their Lord, so a time period which contains such righteous actions is deserving to be sworn upon by the mighty and Majestic Lord".
[Badaa'I At-Tafseer, Vol. 3, Pg. 296]
It Is Considered To Be From The Forty Days That Allaah Appointed Muusaa عليه السلام With
And We appointed for Muusaa (Moses) thirty nights and added (to the period) ten (more), and he completed the term, appointed by his Lord, of forty nights.
[Al-Quraan 7:142]
Imaam As-Sa'dee, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:
"Once Allaah completed his blessing upon them and saved them from thier enemy, and gave them succession in the land, Allaah Intended to complete his favour upon them by revealing to them a book in which was the legislative rulings and praiseworthy creed, so he appointed to Muusaa عليه السلام thirty night's and completed it with another ten so it became forty to prepare Muusaa عليه السلام for the promise of Allaah, so that it's revelation becomes one of great significance amongst them (bani Israaeel) and that he (Muusaa) becomes in a state of anticipation for it."
[Tafseer As-Sa'dee, Pg. 280]
Ibn Katheer, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:
"Indeed the interpreters of the Quraan have differed with regards to these ten (mentioned in the Verse) and what they are. The majority (of scholars) say the thirty are Dhul-Qa'dah and the ten are Dhul-Hijjah. This was stated by Mujaahid, Masrooq & Ibn 'Abbaas. So upon this, Muusaa عليه السلام completed his appointed term by the day of An-Nahr (the day of slaughtering) and this is when Muusaa عليه السلام was spoken to by Allaah."

If You Intend To Sacrifice During The Ten Days Of Dhul-Hijjah, Do Not Cut Your Hair Or Trim Your Nails
Ash-Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan, may Allah preserve him, said :
حلق الشعر وتقليم الأظافر لا يجوزان في عشر ذي الحجة لمن أراد أن يضحي، أو أن يأخذ شيئًا من شعره أو أظافره في عشر ذي الحجة، حتى يذبح أضحيته؛ لنهيه صلى الله عليه وسلم عن ذلك ؛ كما في حديث أسماء رضي الله عنها، أما مجرد تسريح الشعر الذي لا يحصل معه زوال شيء من الشعر؛ فلا بأس به.
“Cutting the hair and trimming the nails is not allowed for the one who intends to make a sacrifice during the ten days of Dhul Hijjah. (Similarly), or to remove any piece of hair from himself or from his nails during the ten days. (This is) until he slaughters his sacrifice due to the prohibition of the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam from that, as comes in the hadeeth of Asmaa, may Allah be pleased with her. As for hairstyling only which doesn’t cause pieces of the hair to fall off, then that is okay”

Question:
Regarding not cutting one’s hair, does this also apply to the family members if a sacrifice is made on behalf of the family by the father?
Answer:
Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen said:
وهذا الحكم خاص بمن يضحّي، أما المضحَّى عنه فلا يتعلق به؛ لأن النبي قال: { وأراد أحدكم أن يضحي… } ولم يقل: أو يضحّى عنه؛ ولأن النبي كان يضحّي عن أهل بيته، ولم يُنقل عنه أنه أمرهم بالإمساك عن ذلك
This ruling is specific to the one slaughtering. As for the one whom the slaughter is made on behalf of, then it’s not connected with him, because the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said “if one you wishes to slaughter” and he didn’t say “or the one whom on his behalf it’s being slaughtered”. The prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم would slaughter on behalf of the people of his house and it wasn’t relayed from him that he commanded them with withholding from that [taking hair, etc]

You still have time to go cut your hair and trim your nails. Get it done before Dhul-Hijjah enters.

The Excellence Of Fasting On The Day Of 'Arafah
The ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah is the day of ’Arafah, since it is on this day that the pilgrims gather at the mountain plain of ’Arafah, praying and supplicating to their Lord.
It is mustahabb (highly recommended) for those who are not pilgrims to fast on this day, since the Prophet (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) was asked about fasting on the day of ’Arafah, so he said (translated meaning), “It expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.” [Saheeh Muslim, No 1162].
Likewise, the Prophet (sallAllaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said (translated meaning), "There is no day on which Allaah frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of ’Arafah. He comes close to those (people standing on ’Arafah), and then He revels before His Angels saying, ‘What are these people seeking.” [Saheeh Muslim, No. 1348].
Imaam At-Tirmithee, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said, “The people of knowledge consider it recommended to fast on the day of ’Arafah, except for those at ’Arafah.” [Refer to Jaami'ut-Tirmithee, 3/377].
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih Al-'Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon him, was asked: "What is the ruling on fasting the day of ‘Arafah for non-pilgrims and pilgrims?"
He replied: "Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah for non-pilgrims is a confirmed Sunnah. The Messenger of Allaah, sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Arafah and he said (translated meaning): “I ask Allaah that it may expiate for (the sins of) the year that comes before it and the year that comes after it.” According to another report he said (translated meaning): “It expiates for the past and coming years.”
As for the pilgrim, it is not Sunnah for him to fast on the day of ‘Arafah, because the Prophet, sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, did not fast on the day of ‘Arafah during the farewell pilgrimage. In Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree it is narrated from Maymuunah, may Allaah be pleased with her, that the people were not sure whether the Prophet, sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, was fasting on the day of ‘Arafah, so she sent him some milk when he was standing in ‘Arafah, and he drank it whilst the people were looking on."

A Detailed Explanation Of The Day Of 'Arafah (9th Dhul-Hijjah) & What To Do On This Day
Shaikh Salih al-Fawzaan (may Allah preserve him) said:
“For verily the Day of ‘Arafah is the ninth day of the blessed Dhul-Hijjah and it is the day of standing at ‘Arafah by the pilgrims and performing the greatest pillar. As the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Hajj is ‘Arafah”. That is, that the greatest pillar of Hajj is standing at ‘Arafah due to what it has of virtue, honor, and status with Allah, the Exalted. It is a blessed day. He (ﷺ) said:
“The best supplication is the supplication on the day of ‘Arafah. The best of what I said and the Prophets before me is: There is no Deity worthy of worship in truth except Allah alone without a partner, to Him is the kingdom and to Him is all praise. And He is over all things Omnipotent”.
So the pilgrims stand on this day of ‘Arafah to perform the greatest pillar of the pillars of Hajj. And it is the day which Allah completed the religion and Allah revealed to His Messenger (ﷺ) saying:
“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion”
[5:3]
Those who are not pilgrims should increase in the remembrance of Allah with Takbir, Tasbeeh, Tahleel, and fast on this day. He (ﷺ) said:
“Fasting the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the year before and the year after it” or as the Prophet (ﷺ) said”.
So the one who is not a pilgrim, he fasts the day of ‘Arafah. As for the pilgrim, then he does not fast in order to have strength to stand on ‘Arafah and devote himself to supplication. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not fast on the Day of ‘Arafah, rather he drank [something] and the people saw him on his riding animal until they knew that he was not fasting. So it is not recommended to fast on the Day of ‘Arafah for the pilgrim. It is only recommended for the one who is not a pilgrim.
Standing at ‘Arafah has its time and its place. As for its time, then it begins from the Zawwal of the sun, the entering of Dhuhr, according to the correct opinion of the Scholars. It begins with the entering of Dhuhr and extends until the emergence of Fajr on the night of Eid. Whoever stands from the day, then he continues until night and he does not leave until the sun sets as the Prophet (ﷺ) did. He (ﷺ) continued to remain standing until the sun set. He determined the sunset, then he went to Muzdalifah. If a person leaves before the sunset, it is necessary for him to return and remain until the sunset. If he does not return, then a fidyah is due upon him. This is because he left off an obligation from the obligations of Hajj, which is standing until sunset. So standing at ‘Arafah is a pillar. As for standing until sunset for the one who is standing at day, then it is obligatory. Whoever misses standing, then he has missed Hajj. Whoever does not stand from the day until the sunset, then he missed an obligation, which is continuing to stand until sunset. A fidyah is upon such a person. For this is the time for standing.
As for the one who stands at night. he comes to ‘Arafah at night, then it is sufficient for him any time of standing, even for a short time. He stands at ‘Arafah, supplicates, and then leaves. Even if the standing is little. Even if he passes it, intending to stand. Even if he passes it and he is a pilgrim. Even if he does not know [where it is], if he is in a state of ihram, and he is eager to stand at ‘Arafah and he searches for it and passes it, as a pilgrim, then he has performed the standing by passing it in the time of standing. This is in terms of the time period. In terms of the place, then ‘Arafah has clear boundaries, well-known pillars, and written signs that tell the boundaries of all the place. So it is upon the pilgrims to be certain to enter within the boundaries and the erected signs. In any place he finds [space] in ‘Arafah, then the standing occurs for them. In any place from the plain of ‘Arafah.

In any place from the plain of ‘Arafah.
He (ﷺ) said: “I stood here, that is near the mountain and the rocks – and all of ‘Arafah is a place to stand. So keep away from the valley of ‘Uranah”.
So all of ‘Arafah is a place of standing. So there is no need for the pilgrim to go to the mountain and ascend the mountain and burden himself and those with him from the elderly, young ones, and the sick. There is nothing that calls for this and it is not Legislated. Rather in any place the pilgrim finds, and all praise is due to Allah, and he is in the state of Ihram on the plain of ‘Arafah, then he has fulfilled what is desired and Legislated for him. So he relaxes in his place and devotes himself to the remembrance of Allah and supplication. The pilgrims pray Dhuhr and ‘Asr in ‘Arafah, shortening and combining them in the time of Dhuhr [جمع التقديم] in order to devote themselves for supplication and worship. It is upon the pilgrims to strive in supplication and supplicate whether riding or standing on his feet or sitting or lying down. He supplicates in any situation he is in during the time of supplication. He strives in supplication and he has urgency in his supplication, perhaps Allah, the Exalted will answer him. He supplicates for himself, for his parents, for his brothers from the fellow Muslims, the living and the dead. He increases in supplication and is submissive due to the statement of the Prophet (ﷺ):
“The best supplication is the supplication of ‘Arafah”.
It is the best of supplications. So a Muslim strives in supplication in this time: between the Zawaal until the sunset if he is standing during the day.
He increases in supplication and he should not be heedless. He should not busy himself in what is not beneficial from engaging conversation, argument, and wasting time. There is not preventative from conversation, however to a limit. The amount that is necessary. The amount that does not waste a lot of the time of the Muslim. Rather he should use most of his time in supplication and remembering Allah, the Exalted in this blessed time. It is authentic in the Hadith that Allah boasts to the Angels with the people of ‘Arafah, on the eve of ‘Arafah saying:
“Look at my servants who come to me disheveled and dusty from every place. I bear witness that I have forgiven them. Disperse, you are forgiven and those whom you intercede for”.
This is a bounty from Allah and indicates the bounty of this day and the bounty of this blessed hour. On this day, Allah, the Exalted descends to the lowest heaven, boasting to the Angels about the pilgrims who are found in this place, in obedience to Allah, hoping for His reward, fearing his punishment. This is a great bounty and open display from the great displays. They are not driven for the desire of the worldly life nor driven by the ruler. They are only driven by Imaan. They came with a great longing, turning their hearts towards these places, not out of greed for the worldly life, nor fear from the creation. They only came out of fear for Allah, the Exalted, hoping for His reward, and desire for His forgiveness”
