The Prophet ﷺ said:

أفضل الصلاة بعد الفريضة صلاة الليل

“The best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer."

[Reported by Muslim on the authority of Abū Hurairah raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhu]
______________________

📝 Words of the day (11):

تَرَاوِيحُ - تَهَجُّدٌ - قِيَامُ اللَّيْلِ

Those of us who have come across these three words would probably know that they generally refer to the same thing; voluntary night prayers, but what's the difference between these three words

1⃣ Qiyāmul-Layl = night prayers offered during the first, last, or any other part of the night; inside and outside Ramaḍhān.

2⃣ Tahajjud = night prayers offered during the LAST PART OF THE NIGHT upon waking from sleep; inside and outside Ramaḍhān.

BENEFIT:
The (ت) in تَهَجُّد is known as 'Tā As-salb' (The Tā of disposession). When it is prefixed to a word it renders its meaning to the complete opposite meaning.

For example : هَجَدَ means: to sleep, but when the (ت) is prefixed = تََهَجَّّدَ, it gives it the opposite meaning : to awaken from sleep.

Another example: أَثِمَ means: to sin, when the (ت) is prefixed = َتَأَثَّمَ, the meaning is changed to: abstaining from sin.

3⃣ Tarāwīḥ = night prayers offered during RAMAḌHĀN specifically; in the first, last, or any other part of the night.

▪️ It is called Tarāwīḥ because of the rest (اسْتِرَاحَة) in between the individual sets.

Which Surah of the Qur’an was Prophet Muhammed ﷺ reciting while praying, that Jubayr ibn Mut’im listened to and embraced Islam?
Who was Jubair ibn Mut’im (may Allah be pleased with him)? READ UNTIL THE END TO FIND OUT.

- He was the son of Mut'im bin 'Adi.
- Jubayr was a noble companion of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.
- He had two sons: Nafi' ibn Jubayr and Muhammad ibn Jubayr.
- He was known for his knowledge of genealogy (the study of family lineage).
- Did you know? He was also the owner of Wahshi ibn Harb who was the slave who killed Hamza ibn ‘Abdul Muttalib (radhiyallahu 'anhu).
- Jubayr (radhiyallahu 'anhu) accepted Islam after hearing the Prophet ﷺ recite Surah At-Tur.

Jubayr bin Mut’im (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Prophet ﷺ, reciting Surat al-Tur in the evening (maghrib) prayer and that was the first time that belief was first planted in my heart."

In another narration: "When the Prophet reached this verse, “Were they created by nothing? Or were they themselves the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain! Or do they own the treasures of your Lord? Or have they been given the authority?” (52:35-37), I felt my heart was about to fly (from realising the firm argument presented by the Qur'an)." [Sahih Al-Bukhāri 4854]

What was the FIRST Surah that was revealed in FULL?
Jabir b. 'Abdullah al-Ansari who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) reported The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) told about the intermission of revelation and narrated: While I was walking I heard a voice from the sky, and raising my head I saw the angel who had come to me in Hira', sitting on a Throne between heaven and earth I was terror-stricken on that account and came back (to my family) and said:

Wrap me up, wrap me up! So they wrapped me up, and the Blessed and Most Exalted Allah sent down: {You who are shrouded, arise and deliver warning, your Lord magnify, your clothes cleanse, and defilement shun,} and "defilement" means idols; and then the revelation followed continuously.

- The first verses to be revealed are the first 5 verses of Surah 'Alaq.

- The first Surah to be revealed completely is Surah Al-Mudathir, as mentioned by some scholars.

- Surah Al-Fatiha was also revealed completely, but the obligation of the prayer came after the revelation of Surah Al-Mudathir, as mentioned by some scholars.

The odour of a fasting person's mouth is more fragrant to Allah than what?
The Prophet (salah allahu ‘alayhi wa salam) said: "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk."

[Al-Bukhari]

Ibn Hajr mentioned:

"And Qadhi Hussein narrated in his commentary that (acts of) worships on the Day of Resurrection will have fragrant smells and the smell of fasting in between the other worships will be that of musk."

[Fath Al-Bari, 4/106]

Ibn 'Abdul-Barr said:

"The meaning ... is that it is purer to Allah and closer to Him, and better to Him than the smell of musk, and this is a virtue of fasting and the reward of those who fast."

[At-Tamheed 19/57]

- Al-Baghawi said in Sharh Al-Sunnah:

“Means to be a complement to the fasting person and the pleasure (of Allah) for his deed.”

*Ramadan Day 8*

When was fasting in Ramadan obligated?
Ramadan was made obligatory for the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in 2 AH, which was the first Ramadan that he fasted, and the Muslims fasted it with him. This was the same year in which the Battle of Badr took place.

Did the Sahaabah (may Allah be pleased with them) fast on the day of Badr?

Al-Haafiz Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (may Allah have mercy on him) stated: "...the Prophet (peace be upon him) went out in pursuit of a caravan of Quraysh that had come from Syria heading towards Madinah, on the Saturday 12th of Ramadan, and he broke his fast on his way to meet it. Ibn al-Musayyab said : ‘Umar said: We went out on two campaigns with the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in Ramadan, the day of Badr and the conquest (of Makkah), and we broke the fast during both."
