▪️Should I avoid implementing aspects of the Sunnah if it goes against the customs?▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizām -may Allāh preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

The questioner says, I live in Madīnah with a brother of mine, and we wear our garments mid-shin. However, some people said, we should avoid this because this is not in line with the custom of the people over there, so is this correct?

📝 Answer:

This statement is false. This (wearing clothes mid-shin) is the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ. We must not leave the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ because people are doing otherwise.

So one must hold fast to his religion and follow the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

As for the statement, this goes against the customs, people's customs are not given precedence over the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ.

Shaykh Abdul Hameed Al Hajooree was asked,

Question:

“The questioner says I am a student of knowledge and have not ceased to love knowledge. If I intend to go seek knowledge, my father threatens me with the Dunya and that he will stop giving me money [so what do you advise me with]?”

Answer:

“If you fear from this threat and fear from losing this wealth which your father gives you or similar to that, then you are weak in your Eeman, weak in determination, and weak in ambitions for the knowledge which you attain is more valuable than the treasures of the Dunya. This is since it is that which the prophet peace and blessings be upon him left behind to be inherited and that which he peace and blessings be upon him left behind is the greatest of that which can be inherited as comes in the narration,

‘Indeed the scholars are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets do not leave behind Dinar or Dirham. The only legacy of the scholars is knowledge, so whoever takes from it, then he has indeed taken the most able share.’

Also oh my brother [it is mentioned in the Qur’aan],

‘Verily, Allah is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong.’

Not your father or so and so.

From the means of attaining provisions is devoting oneself to seek knowledge. Also, from the means to a pleasant life is devoting oneself to the obedience of Allah [as mentioned in the Qur’aan],

‘Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest’

It is permissible for you to go seek knowledge without his permission for As Suyooti relates in his book the ruling of the one who clings on to the earth. He relays more than eleven Imams’ verdicts on the permissibility of seeking recommended knowledge without the permission of his parents let alone knowledge which is obligatory upon an individual to learn. Whoever is pleased with that, then he is pleased and whoever is displeased with that, then let him be displeased.

Thus seek aid with Allah Aza Wa Jal and do not become weak. As it is said, ‘get on the ride before the train leaves you’. One’s life continues to pass and the days go by. The prophet peace and blessings be upon him said,

‘Be prompt in doing good deeds [before you are overtaken] by turbulence which would be like a part of the dark night. A man would be a believer in the morning and turn to disbelief in the evening, or he would be a believer in the evening and turn disbeliever in the morning, and would sell his faith for worldly goods.’

There is no safety from these trials except through seeking knowledge. For that reason, the people of knowledge say the one who travels to a land of disbelief it is befitting that he has knowledge so that he will be able to guard by way of it from the different doubts. Also, that he should be a person of religion to guard by way of it from desires. Allah says reminding the prophet peace and blessings be upon him of his favours,

‘and taught you that which you knew not. And Ever Great is the Grace of Allah unto you’

It is rare that you find a student of knowledge seeking knowledge while his father is the one who drives him to seek knowledge. The people differ in regards to this. From them are those who love knowledge while his father loves knowledge [too]. From them are those who love knowledge while his father hates it. And from them are those who’s father loves knowledge while he hates it.

It is upon us to fear Allah, and [by doing this] you will feel the greatness of this great bounty (i.e. seeking knowledge). By Allah, nothing is equal to it, not high positions, dollars, high status or having many businesses.

If you do not know the value of knowledge, then know that you do not know the value of the religion for knowledge is the religion. Knowledge of the book and the Sunnah is the religion of Islam which Allah sent upon Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him” End translation.

BEWARE OF STATEMENTS THAT CONTAIN SHIRK

Allāh The Most High says:

“And most of them believe not in Allāh except that they attribute partners unto Him.”

[Al-Qur’ān, 12:106]

Ibn Abbās said:

“Verily, one of them committed Shirk to the extent that he committed shirk by ascribing his dog as a partner to Allāh, by saying:
‘If it was not for (this) dog, we would have been robbed at night.’

Forgiveness: The Mark Of A Muslim

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah

May Allaah Have Mercy Upon Him

(Reflect on how he dealt with those who wronged him so greatly. May Allaah rectify us).

"In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Indeed Allaah – to Whom belongs all praise – has bestowed upon me immense grace, great favours and generous blessings which necessitates immense gratitude, being firm upon obedience to Him, and becoming accustomed to having beautiful patience in that which He ordered. Indeed, a servant is ordered to have sabr (patience) in times of ease more so than in times of hardship. Allaah – the Most High – said (interpretation of the meaning):

"But if We let him taste good (favour) after evil (poverty and harm) has touched him, he is sure to say: "Ills have departed from me." Surely, he is exultant, and boastful (ungrateful to Allaah). Except those who show patience and do righteous good deeds, those: theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward (Paradise)."

[Al-Qur'aan 11:10-11].

And you all know that Allaah – the Most Perfect – has blessed this affair (the first of Ibn Taymiyyah’s unjust imprisonment – a period of one and a half years, in the year 705H – which occurred due to some lies and false accusations against him) with such blessings which contain the means to aid His Religion, raise high His Word, aid His Army, and grant honour to His Awliyaa (pious and righteous servants). It is also the cause for strengthening Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah and causing humiliation to the people of innovations and sectarianism.

Likewise, it is also the cause for affirming that which has been affirmed by yourselves from the Sunnah (regarding the truth of this matter), and a cause for increasing this by opening up the avenues of guidance, victory and proofs: such that the truth becomes known to the people, who none but Allaah can enumerate. It is also a cause for the masses to begin to accept the way of the Sunnah and the Jamaa’ah; as well as countless other favours. All of this must therefore be accompanied by immense gratitude to Allaah, as well as having patience – even if this patience is in times of ease.

And you all know that from the great principles which sum up the religion is: Uniting the hearts, unifying the word, and reconcilination between each other, as Allaah – the Most High – said (interpretation of the meanings):

“So fear and obey Allaah, and reconcile the matters of differences between yourselves.” [Al-Qur'aan 8:1].

"And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allaah (i.e. this Qur'aan), and be not divided among yourselves..." [Al-Qur'aan 3:103].

"And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment."

[Al-Qur'aan 3:105].

And other examples like this from the texts (of Revelation), which order us with the jamaa’ah (unity upon the way of the Companions) and coming together, and prohibit splitting and differing. And the people who most exemplify this principle are Ahlul-Jamaa’ah (the people of the Jamaa’ah); just as the people who most exemplify leaving it are the people of sectarianism.

And that which sums up the Sunnah is: Obedience to the Messenger. This is why the Prophet, SalAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said (translated meaning):

“Indeed Allaah is pleased with three things: That you worship Allaah alone without associating any partner along with Him; that you holdfast all together to the Rope of Allaah and not to become split-up; and that you give sincere advice to whomsoever Allaah put in charge of your affairs.“

[Saheeh Muslim, 3/1340, and Ahmad, 2/367].

And in the Sunan collections from the Hadeeth of Zayd Ibn Thaabit and Ibn Mas’uud – who were both great fuqahaa (scholars of deep understanding) – who relate that the Prophet, SalAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said (translated meaning):

“May Allaah enliven whosoever hears my words, memorises them and then conveys them to others. Many a carrier of knowledge does not understand it, a
nd many a carrier of knowledge conveys it to one who has better understanding. There are three things which the heart of a believer has no malice about: Sincerity for Allaah in one’s action; sincere advice to those in authority and clinging to the Jamaa’ah.”

[Ahmad, 4/80, and Ibn Maajah, No. 230. Authenticated by Al-Albaanee in As-Saheehah, No.404].

And his saying: "has no malice” means not having any contempt for them. So the heart of a Muslim does not hate these characteristics. On the contrary, it loves them and is pleased with them.

So the first thing which I shall begin with regarding this principle is what is connected to myself. So you all know – may Allaah be pleased with you all – that I do not desire any harm at all – inwardly or outwardly – for anyone from the general masses of the Muslims, let alone our colleagues and companions. Nor do I harbour any ill-feeling towards anyone of them, nor do I blame them for anything at all.

Rather, to me they are deserving of nobility, love, honour and respect, over and over – each in accordance with their level. And a person cannot be except (one of three types):

1) Someone who sincerely strives to ascertain the truth; and is correct,

2) or one who sincerely strives to ascertain the truth; but errs,

3) or a sinful person.

As for the first, then he is rewarded and thanked. The second is rewarded for his ijtihaad (striving to ascertain the truth), and is forgiven and excused for his error. As for the third, then may Allaah forgive us, and him, and all the believers.

So we should not try to dwell upon the words of those who opposed this fundamental; by saying that so and so is deficient, or so and so did not act, or so and so was the cause of harm to the shaykh, or was the reason why all this occurred, or so and so used to speak about the plots of so and so; and other such similar statements which contain criticism of some of our colleagues and brothers. For indeed do not allow them to harm the brothers and colleagues in this manner, and there is no might, nor any power except with Allaah.

(This is in reference to some of their colleagues and brothers in Damascus, who weakened during this ordeal, and did not remain firm upon the correct methodology. So Ibn Taymiyyah is prohibiting any of his students and collegues from harming them in any way, and makes an excuse for them, and explains that he bears no ill-feeling or hatred in his heart towards any of them. Rather, he makes it clear that he has respect for them, and loves them for the sake of Allaah).

Rather, the likes of this criticism actually returns to the one who said it in the first place, unless he has good deeds by which Allaah will forgive him – if He wills – and indeed Allaah does forgive that which has preceded. And you also all know about the harsh treatment that was given to some of the brothers in Damascus, and that which occurs even now in Egypt.

This – in reality – is not due to a deficiency or shortcoming in the brothers, nor has it occurred because we have changed our views and hate them. Rather, such people, after receiving such harsh treatment increase in the status, love and respect that we have for them. For indeed the likes of these trials are beneficial to the believers, because Allaah corrects and improves them due to it.

Since the believer to another believer is like each of a pair of hands, each washes the other. However, it sometimes happens that dirt cannot be removed except with a certain amount of roughness, but that brings about cleanliness and softness, for which that roughness is praised…

You (also) all know that much of what has occurred in this matter were lies, false accusations, false suspicions, and the following of false desires, the likes of which cannot be described. So all those lies and false accusations that were directed against me, are actually a source of goodness and blessing for me. Allaah – the Most High – said (interpretation of the meaning):

“Indeed those who brought forward the lie are a small group amongst you. However, do not think that it is an e
vil for you. rather, it is good for you. And every person amongst them will be paid the sin of what they earned. And as for the one who took on the leading role in this, his will be a severe punishment.” [Al-Qur'aan 24:11].

So through such trials, Allaah manifests the light of truth and its clear proofs, which repel the falsehood and lies. So I do not desire to take revenge upon any of those who lied against me, or oppressed me, or showed enmity and hatred towards me. For indeed I forgive every Muslim, and I love only the good for them, and I desire for every Muslim the good that I desire for myself.

As for those who lied and did wrong, then I have excused and forgiven them. However, whatever is connected to violating the Rights of Allaah in this affair, then they should seek tawbah (repentance). So if they turn to Allaah in repentance, then Allaah will turn to them in forgiveness, otherwise the Judgement of Allaah will apply to them.

So if a person were to be thanked for his evil actions, then I thank all those who were the cause for this (trial) to happen to me – for it entails all the good of this world and the Hereafter. However, Allaah is thanked for His good blessings and favours by which no affair happens to a believer, except that there is good for him in it.

And the people of good intentions are thanked for their intentions, and the people of good actions are thanked for their actions. And as for those who did evil – then we ask Allaah that He turns to them in forgiveness. And you all know that this is from my nature and character.

Likewise, you all know that Abuu Bakr As-Siddeeq, may Allaah be pleased with him, concerning the matter of al-ifq (the lie against ‘Aaishah, his daughter, and wife of the Prophet, SalAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), about which Allaah revealed some Verses of the Qur’aan, swore that he would not give any more charity to Mistaah Ibn Athaathah; because Mistaah was one of those who participated in the lie. So Allaah revealed (interpretation of the meaning):

“And let not those among you who are blessed with graces and wealth swear not to give (any sort of help) to their kinsmen, al-masaakeen (the poor), and those who left their homes for Allaah's Cause. Let them pardon and forgive. Do you not love that Allaah should forgive you? And Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

[Al-Qur'aan 24:22].

So when this Verse was revealed, Abuu Bakr, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “Rather, by Allaah! I love that Allaah should forgive me.” So he continued to give to Mistaah the aid and charity that he used to give before. [Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree, No. 4757].

So with forgiveness and kind treatment towards one another, and doing Jihaad (fighting and striving) in Allaah’s Path, then it is a must that (interpretation of the meanings):

"...Allaah will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allaah, and never afraid of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allaah which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allaah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower.

Verily, your Wali (Protector or Helper) is Allaah, His Messenger, and the believers, - those who perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, and they bow down (submit themselves with obedience to Allaah in prayer).

And whosoever takes Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed, as Protectors, then the party of Allah will be the victorious."

[Al-Qur'aan 5:54-56].

Was-salaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh."

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“The day of Friday has twelve hours, in which there is no Muslim slave who asks Allah for anything but He will grant it to him, so seek it in the last hour after ‘Asr.”

It has been narrated that Ibn Tawoos reports from his father [Tawoos] that he used to strive in finding the hour that the supplications are accepted on the day of Jum'ah which was after Asr [i.e. the last hour of it]. Ibn Tawoos adds : "And my Father passed away in the hour he used to love , he passed away on the day of Jum'ah after 'Asr."

Bid'ah In The Month Of Rajab

Sh. Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān (حفظه الله تعالى) was asked the following:

Question:

"There are those who single out the month of Rajab with fast; hence, is [there] anything that is confirmed [in the Sunnah to support this]?"

Answer:

The Shaikh had responded with the following:

"There is nothing that is confirmed from worship that is specifically to the month of Rajab; no fasting, no salāḥ, no 'Umrah-absolutely nothing at all specific to it.

[As for] those who are singling it out with worship, then they are the innovators since they introduced into the deen that which is not from it.

Thus, Allah and His Messenger did not legislate any specific form of worship in Rajab; no 'Umrah, no animal sacrifice, no standing [in salāḥ] in any specific night and no fasting in any specific day. Rajab is simply like any other (sacred) month.

The month of al-Muḥarram ([like Rajab) is sacred, since it is from the four sacred months.

As for singling it out with worship, then this from innovation."
