▪️If a woman fears harassment, can she refrain from wearing the niqāb?▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizām -may Allāh preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

Some Muslim women hold it to be obligatary to cover the face, but they don't do so because they fear they might be harassed, or even physically attacked - although nothing of such has happened to her, so is this a valid excuse for her not to wear the niqāb and cover her face?

📝 Answer:

It is not permitted for a woman to leave off covering her face merely because she fears being attacked - while this has yet to happen. Rather, this is from the deceptions of Shayṭān.

Allāh said:
{...وَمَن یَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ یَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ مَخۡرَجࣰا * وَیَرۡزُقۡهُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَحۡتَسِبُۚ...}
"And whoever is mindful of Allāh, He will make a way out for them * and provide for them from sources they could never imagine."
[Sūratuṭ-Ṭalāq 2-3]

And whoever is with Allāh, Allāh will be with him.

{إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُدَ ٰفِعُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ۗ}
"Indeed, Allāh defends those who believe."
[Sūratul-Hajj 38]

"Be mindful of Allāh and Allāh will protect you, be mindful of Allāh and you will find Him in front of you."

So, she must cover her face and observe the correct Islamic veil, as Allāh commanded:

{وَلۡیَضۡرِبۡنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُیُوبِهِنَّۖ}
"Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their ˹hidden˺ adornments."
[Sūratun-Nūr 31]

{یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّبِیُّ قُل لِّأَزۡوَ ٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاۤءِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ یُدۡنِینَ عَلَیۡهِنَّ مِن جَلَـٰبِیبِهِنَّۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ أَدۡنَىٰۤ أَن یُعۡرَفۡنَ فَلَا یُؤۡذَیۡنَۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا}
"O Prophet! Tell your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. In this way it is more likely that they will be recognized ˹as virtuous˺ and not be harassed. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

{وَإِذَا سَأَلۡتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَـٰعࣰا فَسۡـَٔلُوهُنَّ مِن وَرَاۤءِ حِجَابࣲۚ}
"And when you ˹believers˺ ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a barrier."
[Sūratul-Ahzāb 53]

{وَٱلۡقَوَ ٰعِدُ مِنَ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ ٱلَّـٰتِی لَا یَرۡجُونَ نِكَاحࣰا فَلَیۡسَ عَلَیۡهِنَّ جُنَاحٌ أَن یَضَعۡنَ ثِیَابَهُنَّ غَیۡرَ مُتَبَرِّجَـٰتِۭ بِزِینَةࣲۖ وَأَن یَسۡتَعۡفِفۡنَ خَیۡرࣱ لَّهُنَّۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمࣱ}
"As for elderly women past the age of marriage, there is no blame on them if they take off their ˹outer˺ garments, without revealing their adornments. But it is better for them if they avoid this ˹altogether˺. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing."
[Sūratun-Nūr 60]

That means, non-elderly women are obliged to cover their adornments and not leave off wearing the outer garment.

▪️Is it allowed for a male taxi driver to be alone with a female passenger?▪️

Our Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizām -may Allāh preserve him- was asked the following question:

📩 Question:

I have a friend who works as a taxi driver. He picks up passengers; men and women, and transports them to their destination of choice. At times, he might be alone with a strange woman (khalwah) in the car. I told him that it's not permissible for a man to be alone with a strange woman in the same car, but he told me that he has a different fatwa that says, this isn't khalwa - because the car is out in the public and the windows are transparent.?

📝 Answer:

This is incorrect, rather, this is considered khalwah (seclusion with a strange woman). If he picks up a woman without a mahram in his car, this is considered khalwah. And on the journey, he will pass by places where there's no one in sight. And he is exposing himself to fitnah (temptation) by way of her, seeing as no one is watching him except Allāh.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

((لا يخلون أحدكم بامرأة إلا والشيطان ثالثهما))
"No man is secluded with a strange woman except that the devil is the third of them.

Sheikh:
Who narrated this hadīth?

(students raise their hands and the sheikh picks someone to answer)

Student:
Reported by Aḥmad on the authority of 'Umar.

Sheikh:
Yes, and the chain of narration is 'Hassan' (sound).

Therefore, if a man works as a taxi driver, then he shouldn't pick up a female passenger unless she is with her mahram.

Advice for arabic grammar students

(1/2)

Our Shaykh Abu Bilaal Al-Hadhramy- may Allah preserve him- was asked the following question on 18th Jamaada Al-Awwal 1441(13th January 2020):

📝🔹Question:

The Questioner says: What do you advise me to do now that I have become overwhelmed by the science of 'nahwu' (arabic grammar) due to 'the five nouns'?

📩🔸Answer:

(Just) the five (have overwhelmed you)? They are six according to the correct view!

Do not be overwhelmed at all. Be patient.

{اطْلُبْ وَلا تَضْجَرَنَّ مِنْ مَطْلَب
فَآفَةُ الطَّالِبِ أَنْ يَضْجَرَا}
Seek and despair not from the quest
For the seekers downfall lies in his despair

{أَمَا تَرَى الحَبْلَ بِتَكْرَارِهِ
فِيْ الصَّخْرَةِ الصَّمَّاءِ قَدْ أَثَّرَا}
See you not the rope by its repetition
Upon a solid boulder leaves a trace?

So seek (knowledge) and persevere.

《ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ 》
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous
《ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَم 》ِ
Who taught by the pen

(Al-'Alaq 96:3-4)

Recite!
and do not say 'I am not a reciter'.
Recite!
Persevere!
Allah will teach you, He is the extremely generous - the most generous - free is He from all imperfection. So be patient upon this knowledge. This knowledge requires patience. Nobody should be overwhelmed by knowledge because if a person allows himself to become overwhelmed by knowledge he will certainly have forbidden himself from much goodness.

This 'nahwu' is amongst the most important means of attaining knowledge in both supplementary and core sciences. It is a means to (understand) the foundations of tafseer, a means to understand the correct belief as well as other supplementary subjects such as the principles of fiqh [1] and fiqh in and of itself - although fiqh is considered to be a core subject nahwu is still means to understand it because nahwu certainly expands the mind, increases one in understanding and as it is said: 'it is the ax of knowledge' (i.e. a tool through which it can be deconstructed) - i.e. the knowledge of supplementary sciences not core. So upon this one must be patient.

Imam Al-Kasaaee (may Allah have mercy upon him) is used as an example on this subject. He is from the leading scholars of qur’ānic recitation and the arabic language yet if failure in nahwu is mentioned, Imam Al-Kasaaee (may Allah have mercy upon him) is mentioned too because he repeatedly failed to understand nahwu and repeatedly tried again. Every time he failed he tried again.

He experienced an element of despondency until he saw an ant carrying some things intending to ascend with them by lifting them and taking them to a place. But everytime it picked it up and sought to ascend with it, it dropped so it went back to pick it up a second time. He was amazed by its work ethic and said: ' this ant is miniscule yet does not give up on this action, (rather) it repeats. Every single time it drops it, it starts again; picks it up, raises and it falls on top if it. He said: 'By Allah I will exert myself in seeking knowledge once more. He succeeded and became a leading scholar; a peer to rival Seabaway in this knowledge. This is the bounty of Allah of which he gives it to whom he wishes.

So despondency in knowledge; this is the cause of failing (to attain) knowledge as well as failure in other affairs. So nobody should allow themselves to become despondent. Rather they should acquaint themselves with big dreams and high hopes, especially with regards to beneficial knowledge; that Allah may make him a point of return for the people, that Allah may make him, by His permission, free is He from all imperfection and Most High, a teacher, a lecturer or a a memoriser (of the Quran and Sunnah); this is what a person should acquaint himself with.

All bounty belongs Allah, he gives it to whoever he wishes. Perhaps Allah will open (your understanding) in one field of study and for someone else in three or four. (If so) Allah will have granted you something you can benefit the people with so congratulations to you.

(2/2)

Our Shayk, Muqbil, may
Allah have mercy upon him, used to repeat this advice a lot to his sons (i.e. his students) and it is amongst the most important things we benefited from his advice; that he would say: 'Oh my sons, I did not come to know myself except by nahwu', he intended by saying this: come to know yourself (through nahwu) and take great care of it because I did not come to know myself except by nahwu and I (only) benefited (from other sciences) after I benefited from nahwu.

These are remarkable words.

The prayer of the traveller residing for more than four days

Our Shaykh Abu Bilaal Al-Hadhramy- may Allah preserve him- was asked the following question on 15th Jamaada Al-Awwal 1441(10th January 2020):

📝🔹Question: If a traveller travels to a town and intends to reside in it for the duration of one week; does he shorten or complete the prayers from the first day of his arrival or does he shorten them for the duration of (the first) four days and then complete them?

📩🔸Answer:

This is a matter of disagreement between the scholars; the one that intends to reside in a town other than his own for more than four days; does he complete or shorten (the prayers)?

That which is upheld by the majority of the scholars is that whoever intends to reside for more than four days completes (the prayers) from the very first day of his arrival, and that shortening (the prayers) is unacceptable if he intends to reside (for more than four days) - and is sure within himself that he is going to reside (for more than four days) in the town he intended, travelled to and singled out.

In this case he completes (the prayers) from day one (of his arrival) because he has intended (to reside for) more than four days. This view is the safest; that he completes (the prayers).

If he intended (to reside for) less than four days - a maximum of four days - then he certainly does combine (the prayers) and continues to do so (throughout the four day period). If he is made an offer thereafter and finds that he would like to prolong (his stay) then he completes (the prayers).

As long as he left with the intention of a maximum of four days, then it is no problem for him to shorten (the prayers from the first day of his arrival).

As for if he intends (to reside for) ten days and says: 'I have these first four days in which to shorten (the prayers) and however long I stay in addition to this, what will I do in it? (I will) complete (the prayers)'. This is not correct nor is it what the scholars intended. They simply intended that whoever intends to reside in a town other than his own town for more than four days completes (the prayers) from the very first day of his arrival, and that it is unacceptable for him to shorten (the prayers). Whoever intends to reside for a maximum of four days then he may certainly combine (the prayers).

Whoever is unsure (about how long he will reside) combines (the prayers) until Allah wills (for him to leave) if he does not know when he will leave this town. The reports relayed from the Salaf; i.e. ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he combined (prayers) in Azerbaijan for approximately six months are based upon the understanding that he was in a state of uncertainty (about when he would leave) because it is a land of ice and perhaps he wanted to leave but was unable to.

Some of the people have (incorrectly) taken from the statements of some of the scholars and said: 'if the person does not intend to remain for a long period of time in a town then he shortens (the prayers) until he leaves this town', this is how they interpreted the speech of Shayk Al-Islam (may Allah have mercy upon him) Meaning; if one intends to reside for a long period of time his journey has ended in which case it is (obligatory) upon him to complete (the prayers).

As for the one who does not intend to remain in a town for a long period of time; (for example) he goes to it to seek knowledge without intending to stay for a long period of time or reside in it. Rather, he only intends to seek knowledge and then return (to his town) - even if he intends (to reside) for a year or two; he combines (the prayers) - this is not correct.

The correct view is that he completes (the prayers) if he travels to seek knowledge intending (to remain) more than four days. As for if he and is family are residents here and still combining (the prayers); this individual is being fooled by Shaytaan and will miss out on much goodness and the stance of the majority of scholars is the safest.

Allah has honoured the people of sunnah with knowledge

Our Shaykh Abu Bilaal Al-Hadhramy- may Allah preserve him- stated on 4th Jamaada At-Thaaneya 1441(29th January 2020):

Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
["إنا كنا أذل قوم فأعزنا الله بالإسلام، فمهما نطلب العزة بغير ما أعزنا الله به أذلنا الله"]
"We were certainly the most humiliated of people then Allah granted us honour through Islam. So whatever we seek of honour by other than what Allah has honoured us by; we will be humiliated by Allah." [1]

So we say: the people of the sunnah are a people Allah has honoured by knowledge; so if they seek (honour through) other than knowledge; I swear by Allah they will be humiliated.

So our honour is in the knowledge Allah has facilitated for us (free from all imperfection is He) and in the means of attaining knowledge He has placed at our disposal; like these institutes of learning.

So hang on to this knowledge oh people of sunnah!

📽️ *The Dawah to Allah is not In Need of Tasweer* 📸

🎙️ *Shaikh Muhammad ba Jamaal* حفظه الله said in a lesson between Maghrib and Isha:

📍"Alot of of the people say, *'Tasweer is good for dawah'*, akhi look at the dawah of Shaikh Muqbil, it's a clear proof there is no need for tasweer in dawah. Look at the dawah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ it spread without the use of this tasweer. (And the Dawah of) Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali, and they were in the very center of polytheists amongst a people that all they knew was misguidance, idol worshipping, and shirk, so if tasweer was from this religion and from that which is a necessity for it, Allah would have sent a prophet calling his people with tasweer.

📌Even the Companions of the Messenger of Allahﷺ, if this tasweer was from the deen they would have made pictures of the Prophet ﷺ and perhaps written underneath it a hadith or some words and spread that to call the people to Islam. However, this tasweer was never from the ways of calling to Allah. It is not from the religion to begin with, this attaching the people to these images of tasweer.

📌How many of our scholars, up until today, their statements are known and lasting with us, and their methodology has been preserved and people are still debating over their statements and trying to understand their jurisprudence and not one of them had some channel broadcasting their images. So why then do we now say that there is a need for this tasweer.!?"

⁉️Did Allah command you to make images of yourselves in order to call the people to Islam? No He did not oh my brother. Allah has only commanded you to call the people,

{ادْعُ إِلِى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُم بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ}

that which translates as:

*"Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.* [Nahl:125]

📌It reaches who it reaches. You are not charged with making sure Islam reaches to every corner of the world. If you have the ability to go to these remote places and give them dawah then go. But their guidance is not upon you so why are you falling into this sin of tasweer when the people of knowledge say that this tasweer is not permissibile in totality and this is the position of the majority of the scholars of our time. Yet you find some who say, 'no it is permissibile' and this position has been refuted for it is falsehood and it is rejected. And Allah's aid is sought."

All praises are due to Allāh.

As to what follows:

Upon you is to have concern for (the following) three affairs O Muslim!

1️⃣ - The hearing; so that it does not hear anything but good.

2️⃣ - The vision; so that it does not see anything but good.

3️⃣ - The heart; so that it does not believe in anything but good.

And if these three limbs are preserved, your religion will be preserved.
