The small circuits have to prove that the operations and the values they use are consistent with those in the big table, we call this lookup. The overhead of lookup is very significant and it’s so time-consuming.

The basic idea of zkRollup is to aggregate a huge number of transactions into one Rollup block and generate a succinct proof for the block off-chain. The smart contract on Layer 1 only needs to verify the proof and apply the updated state directly.
