Somali President Highlights Military Gains at Entebbe Summit
Entebbe, April 25, 2025 - The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, participated on Friday in the Extra-Ordinary Summit of the Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Plus Somalia held at the Ugandan State House in Entebbe.
President Hassan Sheikh delivered a keynote address at the summit, outlining the significant progress made by the Somali National Army in the fight against terrorism. He stressed the importance of sustained international support to strengthen the army’s capabilities, enabling it to take full responsibility for safeguarding national security.
The summit brought together Heads of State and Government from Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, and Uganda, as well as representatives from the United Nations, African Union, European Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), United Kingdom, and United States.
Key outcomes of the summit included:
• Commendation of Somalia’s recent milestones, including accession to the East African Community (EAC), election to the United Nations Security Council, the lifting of the arms embargo, implementation of economic reforms, and the launch of voter registration for direct elections.
• Acceleration of efforts to train, equip, and develop the Somali National Army.
• Strengthening of intelligence, aerial surveillance, and air support in counter-terrorism operations.
• Promotion of closer coordination between the federal government and member states to enhance stability in liberated areas.
• Commitment to securing sustainable funding for AUSSOM and scaling up support for the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF).
President Hassan Sheikh expressed his appreciation to the participating Heads of State and Government for their continued support toward peace and stability in Somalia, reaffirming the country’s commitment to completing the rebuilding of its national army and ensuring long-term public security.
