Cukurs’s war crimes and his operative role in the extermination of Latvia’s Jewish community are well documented, as is his senior position in the Latvian Nazi collaboration unit (Arajs Kommando). Any attempt to clear his name is not only regrettable, but an insult to the memory of his victims. We expect this decision to be reconsidered and reversed.

As we mark National Holocaust Remembrance Day and 80 years since the end of the Holocaust, such a decision is morally and historically wrong. Acknowledging history is crucial to ensuring that the crimes of the Holocaust are never repeated.
