Thomas Hodgskin was considered the most dangerous man in the country by British capitalists in the early 1830s after the release of his 1829 pamphlet Labour Defended Against the Claims of Capital.

Building on Adam Smith’s labour theory of value, he held that capitalist profits were an unjust extraction from labour.

Writing at a time when worker organising was illegal, he argued that this was unjust. He responded to the claim that strikes would lead to capital flight by saying that this would be good for the working class. The capitalists could take their money overseas but not their machinery or the workers’ skills. With the capitalists gone, organised workers could take over industries. This would be an improvement because workers would no longer have capitalists taking the fruits of their labour.

They argued that while these two factions might show "hostility" towards each during times of peace, their internal beef is purely luxury. The moment the working class poses an actual threat to the system as a whole, these internal divisions stop existing.

When the class interest is endangered, the ruling factions stop fighting each other and present a united front to protect the status quo.

During World War I, Lenin wrote Socialism and War to bring clarity to the socialist movement on the nature of the conflict. All wars are different, but war in general is an extension of class struggle and cannot end permanently until class society is overcome.

This does not mean that workers should be pacifists. Far from it, many wars throughout history, from the English Civil War to the revolutions of Russia have nevertheless played a progressive role, serving to dismantle outdated modes of production to carry us forward to more advanced stages of humanity despite resistance from those classes who would refuse to give up power by peaceful means.

The overthrow of US imperialist hegemony will be the greatest war our generation has seen so far, but forces like Iran uniting against the US and its vassal states are nevertheless playing a monumental, historic role and deserve our full and uncompromising support.

Victory is certain, but how long it takes is up to us. 🇮🇷

They drew a hard line between their work and the "idealistic view of history," which they argued looks for categories and philosophies to explain human progress. Instead, they insisted on analysing the actual material conditions and economic realities of society at the time.

For them, history is a process rooted in the material world.

Rajani Palme Dutt was one of the greatest theorists the CPGB ever produced. With the rise of socialism, the ruling class resorted to two methods to combat worker militancy and revolution: fascism and social democracy, which for all their rhetoric were in fact two sides of the same coin and both tools of monopoly capital.

Palme Dutt's analysis taught us that whilst a united front with the leadership of social democracy against fascism was not possible, communists could build a united front with working-class members of social-democratic parties. This united front had two objectives: 1) To defeat fascism and, 2) To expose the treachery of social-democratic leaders.

For all their leftist sugar-coating, the reformist leadership of social democracy are deceivers of the working class, happy to promote imperialism and war, happy to abandon concessions when profit is threatened, and happy to collaborate with fascists in times of social upheaval to suppress the workers' movement.
