Take a moment to ponder this passage by Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim:

من أعجب الْأَشْيَاء أَن تعرفه ثمَّ لَا تحبه وَأَن تسمع داعيه ثمَّ تتأخر عَن الْإِجَابَة وَأَن تعرف قدر الرِّبْح فِي مُعَامَلَته ثمَّ تعْمل غَيره وَأَن تعرف قدر غَضَبه ثمَّ تتعرّض لَهُ وَأَن تذوق ألم الوحشة فِي مَعْصِيَته ثمَّ لَا تطلب الْأنس بِطَاعَتِهِ وَأَن تذوق عصرة الْقلب عِنْد الْخَوْض فِي غير حَدِيثه والْحَدِيث عَنهُ ثمَّ لَا تشتاق إِلَى انْشِرَاح الصَّدْر بِذكرِهِ ومناجاته وَأَن تذوق الْعَذَاب عِنْد تعلق الْقلب بِغَيْرِهِ وَلَا تهرب مِنْهُ إِلَى نعيم الإقبال عَلَيْهِ والإنابة إِلَيْهِ وأعجب من هَذَا علمك أَنَّك لابد لَك مِنْهُ وَأَنَّك أحْوج شَيْء إِلَيْهِ وَأَنت عَنهُ معرض وَفِيمَا يبعدك عَنهُ رَاغِب

“Among the most astonishing things is that you know Him, yet you do not love Him;
and that you hear His call, yet you delay in responding;
and that you know the profit of dealing with Him, yet you work for someone else;
and that you know the severity of His anger, yet you expose yourself to it;
and that you taste the pain of estrangement caused by disobeying Him, yet you do not seek the comfort of obeying Him;
and that you feel the constriction of the heart when engaging in speech other than His and talk that is not about Him, yet you do not long for the expansion of the chest through His remembrance and intimate supplication to Him;
and that you taste the torment when the heart becomes attached to other than Him, yet you do not escape from that to the delight of turning to Him and returning to Him.
And even more astonishing than all of this is that you know you cannot do without Him,
and that you are in utmost need of Him,
yet you turn away from Him
and desire what distances you from Him.”

The Sunset Timing Clock in Masjid Nabawi

A lot of people are confused by this clock, but it is actually very useful.

It reaches 12 at the time of sunset everyday, allowing those fasting to know how much time is left for Magrib.

وَمِمَّا يُعْزَى إِلَى السَّرِيِّ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الْكِنْدِيِّ:

لَا تُخْدَعَنَّ عَنِ الْعُلُومِ فَإِنَّهَا ... سَرْجٌ يَزِيدُ عَلَى الزَّمَانِ ضِيَاؤُهَا
تُنْسَى الْقُرُونَ فَلَا يُشِيدُ بِذِكْرِهَا ... أَحَدٌ وَيُذْكَرُ دَائِبًا عُلَمَاؤُهَا
فَاحْرِصْ عَلَى جَمْعِ الْعُلُومِ فَإِنَّهَا ... رِيُّ الْقُلُوبِ مِنَ الصَّدَى وَشِفَاؤُهَا

Do not be deceived and turned away from knowledge
For it is the lamp that illuminates time itself

Generations are forgotten and no one sings their praise
But its learned are always remembered

So take great care in gathering knowledge
For verily, it heals the heart of its thirst, and cures

The sheikh was travelling and couldn’t come to the Dars so he sent coffee for the students with his son. When I saw him later I told him we were waiting for him but only the coffee came. He said, ‘If you don’t find the meat, you will at least find the broth’ 😄
