From Ukraine to Jerusalem for a Bar Mitzvah at the Kotel

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine extends heartfelt congratulations to Grigoriy Urikh, son of Oleksandr Urikh – a trusted friend and dedicated partner of the FJCU – on his recent bar mitzvah.

The ceremony took place in Jerusalem, at a synagogue near the Kotel, one of the most sacred sites in the Jewish world. The event was organized with the support of FJCU Chairman Rabbi Mayer Stambler, who also led the ceremony and shared warm blessings with the young man and his family.

A bar mitzvah – “son of the commandment” – marks the moment when a Jewish boy becomes personally responsible for fulfilling the mitzvot. It is a significant spiritual milestone that deepens one’s connection to G-d, the Torah, and the Jewish people.

May this step be the beginning of a meaningful Jewish journey – toward Torah, chuppah, and good deeds.
The Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine is deeply saddened to announce the untimely passing of Andrii Kurovskyi, who died on 28 May 2025 while serving on the Pokrovsk front line, following sudden cardiac arrest.

For nearly two decades, Andrii Vitaliyovych was a dedicated computer science teacher at the Or Avner Private Lyceum in Zhytomyr. He was not only a highly qualified educator, but also a compassionate and kind-hearted man, deeply respected by his colleagues and dearly loved by his students.

From the very first days of the full-scale invasion, he voluntarily joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, standing in defence of his homeland.

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones, and shares in their profound grief.

Delegation from the French Embassy in Ukraine Visits Dnipro Jewish Community Ahead of Shavuot

On the eve of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, the Jewish community of Dnipro welcomed a distinguished delegation from the French Embassy in Ukraine.

This visit was led by His Excellency Mr Gaël Veyssière, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Ukraine. He was accompanied by Mr Olivier Jacquot, the Cultural and Cooperation Counsellor, and Mr François Cottel, the Political Counsellor.

The delegation was received by Mr Zelig Brez, the Director of the Dnipro Jewish Community, who guided the guests through the community’s key institutions: the central synagogue of “Golden Rose,” the National Sofer Center, the world-renowned Menorah Jewish Center, the “Museum of Jewish Memory and the Holocaust in Ukraine,” and the Jewish Medical Center (JMC).

Mr Brez offered an overview of the community’s history — its rich heritage, the devastation of Jewish life in the 20th century, and the remarkable process of revival that followed Ukraine’s independence. He also explained why Dnipro has become a leading centre of Jewish renaissance across the post-Soviet region. Special attention was given to the community’s ongoing development plans, even in the face of today’s complex challenges.

The French Embassy delegation also attended the end-of-year celebration at Levi Yitzchak Schneerson Lyceum No. 144, marking the conclusion of the academic year.
