Kropyvnytskyi Honors the Memory of Ukrainians Recognized as Righteous Among the Nations

A memorial gathering was held in Kropyvnytskyi to honor the Ukrainians who risked their lives to save Jews from Nazi terror during World War II. The ceremony took place near the memorial sign “To the Jews – Victims of Nazism”, located in the Righteous Among the Nations Square.

The participants observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims, followed by a prayer delivered by Rabbi Dan Zakuta. Representatives of local authorities, civil society, and youth laid flowers and symbolic stones at the memorial.

Deputy Mayor Serhii Kolodiazhnyi emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory.

According to the Ukrainian Rescuers: A Marathon of Stories project, 53 Ukrainians recognized as Righteous Among the Nations once lived in what is now Kirovohrad Oblast. The last of them, Volodymyr Chernovol, passed away at the end of 2022.

The square where the ceremony was held bears a deeply symbolic name — Righteous Among the Nations Square. It was renamed on July 8, 2021, by a decision of the Kropyvnytskyi City Council to honor the heroism of the Ukrainians who saved Jewish families.

We remember. We honor. We are grateful.
