While there exist very few rules to how a scene may be shot and what that manner of shooting can effectuate - there is a visual grammar to cinema. It is as fluid and flexible as cinema itself, and the best way to read it, is to look at your favourite scene and try and figure out how it works. Here's a reading of one of our favourite scenes from Swades.

Does Roohdaar walk into the frame or into the pages of Hindi cinema's history? The cumulative impact of the cinematography, the edgy soundtrack and this gem of an actor has made this one of my favourite character entry sequences in Hindi cinema.

Combining tragedy, guilt and the reluctance to let go, this scene from Scorsese's Shutter Island is both haunting and devastating. It is like being confronted with the moments frozen in memory and the awareness that those moments have passed. Eaten away by his own psyche, consumed by the memories of war, Teddy Daniels holds his wife as she crumbles in his arms.
