‘Kwaidan’ (1964) is both a haunting and a beautiful piece of art. It is classified as horror primarily because of its supernatural and afterlife themes and unsettling atmosphere, but it doesn't rely on cheap jump scares to convey this disturbing feeling in the viewer.
‘Kwaidan’ is a collection of four Japanese folk tales with, as mentioned, supernatural themes. Everything from visuals, score and pacing is crafted stupendously to fit the story and maximize the impact each tale provides. Highly recommended!
