The visuals of Tumbbad are a lesson on using colors to create an atmospheric ambiance to transport back the audience to a certain era. Cinematographer Pankaj Kumar (@punkudge) used bold palettes such as:-

Blue- To showcase the constant monsoon and the drenched world of the characters.

Red- It was strikingly used in the scenes inside the womb, giving the whole act of getting money spooky and dangerous.

Yellow- This color was period friendly as it mimicked the light that came from lamps in the era, and also put forth the idea of the characters infatuated with money and greed.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his elaborate production design, ambient lighting, and particular use of color that reflect the character's personalities and the situations they are in. In the film Padmaavat, he brilliantly sets the context of different scenes with different color tones to make us feel the gravitas of each situation.

For eg., He distinguishes between the protagonist and the antagonist through warmer and darker tones and then balances it when we see them together on the screen. This clear distinction helps the audience to associate a certain feeling with the characters and experience the film more immersively.
