From Mute to Mic: My Public Speaking Journey from the Heart of Ajegunle
Growing up in the bustling, rugged streets of Ajegunle, where survival is a daily hustle and dreams often get lost in the noise, I never imagined I’d someday be handed a microphone, not to mention owning my voice.
As a boy, I was timid. The kind of shy that made me dodge conversations, avoid eye contact, and freeze up when asked even the simplest of questions. I couldn't articulate my thoughts, and I struggled with confidence. For a long time, I felt invisible in a world that rewarded loudness and boldness.
But I still remember the day everything changed.
It was at a youth-led event organized by the Uncommon Man Network, right there in the Orodu axis of Ajegunle. I was just one of the many faces in the crowd when the host, with a big smile and a firm grip on the mic, walked straight toward me. She asked, “Where do you see yourself in five years?”
It was the simplest question ever but to me, it felt like a thunderbolt.
I froze. My mind went blank. My palms were sweaty. People stared. I stammered something incoherent, then sat down, embarrassed. That moment haunted me for days. But it also ignited a fire in me.
I made a quiet vow to myself that this fear will not define me.
That’s when I began my journey.
I signed up for a public speaking training led by Miracle Ihuoma , Samuel Umoh MBA FMVA® , and Alfred Konaughe . Those sessions changed my life. They didn’t just teach me how to speak they taught me how to believe in the power of my story. Slowly, the shy Ajegunle boy who once dreaded the mic began to rise… voice firm, words clear, purpose strong.
Today, I speak on platforms I once only dreamt about. I teach others to own their voice, just like I learned to own mine.

Over the years, I’ve realized that there's a wide gap between knowing and doing, especially in the world of communication.
You can study all the theories, attend every masterclass, and read every book on public speaking but that doesn’t automatically make you an effective speaker. Likewise, being able to speak fluently or loudly doesn’t mean you’re connecting with your audience or conveying your message with clarity, emotion, and purpose.
True communication goes beyond words, it’s about intention, connection, and impact.
Whether you’re a leader, teacher, entrepreneur, or advocate, remember this:
