📖 Trade Tensions Then and Now 🌍

⚔️ In the mid-19th century, Britain and China became embroiled in the Opium Wars. London wanted to equalize the trade imbalance: China willingly sold tea, silk, and porcelain but bought almost nothing in return.

💡 Britain's solution was to export opium from India, a commodity that quickly became highly sought after but destructive. When the Chinese authorities began to crack down, a military response followed under the slogan "protecting free trade."

📌 As a result, China opened its ports, signed unequal treaties, and lost some of its economic sovereignty. This was the beginning of the so-called "century of humiliation."

📆 Today, trade remains an arena of geopolitical tensions. The U.S. and China engage in trade and technological competition, imposing tariffs and restricting exports and access to technology. But now, instead of guns, it's negotiations, duties, and sanctions.

👉 In the past, it was a fight over tea and silver.
👉 Today, it's over microchips, supply chains, and digital influence.

🔍 History doesn't repeat itself verbatim, but much of it resembles current events. This gives us reason to think: How do we find a balance between economic interests and global stability?

Gambling can take many forms, including sports betting, casino games, and lottery tickets.

☄️ The US and China announced “substantial progress” after two days of trade talks in Geneva, agreeing to establish a new negotiation framework amid tariff levels as high as 145% on Chinese goods and 125% on US exports, but offering few concrete details.

🇪🇺The euro has fallen 14% to $1.1100, its weakest since 2021, as investor sentiment sours despite Germany’s €1 trillion stimulus, with forecasts now pointing to $1.05 by year-end and $1.00 by 2027, reinforcing the dollar’s 60% reserve dominance.

🇯🇵 Japan’s 30-year bond yield jumped 5 basis points to 2.955%—its highest since 2000—amid fading demand for haven assets, weak 10-year auction demand, and rising fiscal concerns following US-China trade optimism.

📈 UniCredit posted a record €2.77 billion Q1 profit—beating the €2.38 billion estimate—on €6.55 billion in revenue, and now forecasts over €9.3 billion in annual profit and €23.5 billion in revenue, as CEO Andrea Orcel eyes deals with Commerzbank.

🪙UBS may face a $20 billion capital hike—nearly 30% more than current levels—as Swiss regulators draft new too-big-to-fail rules in June, but both sides are expected to avoid a full-blown clash as the bank balances political pressure
