I'm reading "Feminist, Queer, Crip," and I'm at the chapter that discusses the Deaf lesbian couple who were delighted to find out that their children were Deaf like them. In fact, they conceived the children with sperm donated by a Deaf friend to increase the probability that their children would be Deaf. I thought about my hearing parents' reactions to finding out that I was Deaf: shock, disappointment, sadness. I internalized their grief and have always felt a sense of brokenness in their eyes. I wonder what it would have been like to have parents who actually celebrated and embraced my Deafness, who saw me as whole and complete. I probably wouldn't have needed as much therapy throughout my life. source

I don't know how people came to think that "the banality of evil" means "evil people are people too".

That's also true but it's not what the banality of evil means.

The term was coined by Hannah Arendt in her report on the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the "final solution" in the Holocaust.

It describes the way in which the Nazis at large and Eichmann in particular have turned the horrendous act of mass murder into just another job, disconnecting themselves morally and emotionally from their actions.

Before the death camps and gas chambers, Nazi soldiers simply shot Jews into mass graves by the hundreds of thousands. It was a lot cheaper and faster, but it caused great psychological distress for the murderers who pulled the trigger.

The leadership's solution was a massively upscaled version of the "gas vans" they used to mass murder hundreds of thousands of Germans with disabilities and mental health issues. source

There need to be like, regular PSAs or something about how easy it is to make dumplings. There is a reason every culture on earth has some variation of dumpling.

Take some starch. Get it wet. Make a dough. Make some filling. Put the filling in the dough. Cook it. You have achived the ideal foodstuff.

Mix and match with what you have available. There are ways to do this wrong but like. You have to really fuck it up. Like. Burn down the house kinda fuck up. Infinite variety. Use rice, flour, cornmeal, potatoes, yeast, whatever. Boil it, fry it, bake it, steam it, someone has done it like that before you. Meats, cheeses, veggies, mushrooms, fruits, sweets, baby Jesus figurines, anything goes.

Go forth and make dumplings.
