Reading through Hitler’s speeches from the period 1920–22, it seems amazing that he attracted larger and larger audiences with such repeated mantra-like phrases. But perhaps it was the monotonous repetition of his accusations, vows of revenge and promises for the future that was the key to his success. In the chapter in Mein Kampf that focuses on propaganda, Hitler wrote:
The receptivity of large masses is very limited. Their capacity to understand things is slight whereas their forgetfulness is great. Given this, effective propaganda must restrict itself to a handful of points, which it repeats as slogans as long as it takes for the dumbest member of the audience to get an idea of what they mean.
Hitler’s analysis was hardly original. In fact, it recalled a pre-war book by the Frenchman Gustave Le Bon entitled The Psychology of the Masses, which by 1919 was in its third edition. Like Hitler, Le Bon described the masses as stupid, egotistical, feminine, fickle, incapable of accepting criticism and ruled by uncontrollable urges. Hitler presumably became acquainted with Le Bon’s ideas through a book by the Munich neurologist J. R. Rossbach called The Soul of the Masses, which appeared in 1919 and quoted the Frenchman extensively.
IRONICALLY, THEREFORE, THE BEER-CELLAR RABBLE-ROUSER, WHO LIKED TO DEPICT HIMSELF AS A MAN OF THE PEOPLE, IN FACT DESPISED THE MASSES, WHICH HE REGARDED AS NOTHING MORE THAN A TOOL TO BE MANIPULATED TO ACHIEVE HIS POLITICAL AMBITIONS. In this respect, too, Hitler was no exception, but rather a mouthpiece of the cultural pessimism represented in particular by the authors associated with the “conservative revolution” in the Weimar Republic. Nonetheless, unlike those theoreticians, Hitler knew how to draw a mass audience, and that in turn attracted the interest of nationalistic conservatives.

«Adam Tooze, whose work so far has focused on the emergence of economic statistics in early twentieth-century Germany, gathers extensive economic data to demonstrate conclusively that rearmament was the motor that drove German economic recovery from the outset of the Third Reich. The Depression had thrown more than a third of the workforce into unemployment, and the Nazis made great play with so-called job creation schemes like the construction of the new freeways, the Autobahnen, but in reality even these were meant to serve military purposes (ferrying troops and equipment rapidly around the country); and the number of jobs they actually provided was very small. Unemployment remained at high levels until the introduction of mass conscription soaked up entire generations of young men from 1935 onwards. Tooze is saying nothing very new here; and his claim to be overturning an entrenched orthodoxy that puts civilian job creation at the centre of the Nazi economic recovery has to be taken with a pinch of scepticism. SIMILARLY, ALTHOUGH HE SUGGESTS THAT THE EVIDENCE HE PRESENTS FOR THE RECOVERY BEGINNING IN THE LATE SUMMER OF 1932, SIX MONTHS BEFORE HITLER CAME TO POWER, ‘CONTRADICTS ALL SUBSEQUENT PORTRAYALS OF THE GERMAN ECONOMY UNDER NATIONAL SOCIALISM’, THE FACT IS THAT ECONOMIC HISTORIANS HAVE LONG KNOWN THAT THE NAZIS WERE LUCKY IN THEIR TIMING, TAKING OVER THE GERMAN ECONOMY JUST AS IT WAS BEGINNING TO COME OUT OF THE DEPRESSION. What his book does offer is a mass of evidence that finally puts these arguments beyond dispute. Hitler’s drive to rearm was so obsessive, so megalomaniacal, that he was prepared to sacrifice almost anything to it. So Mussolini previously referred to himself as an "authoritarian communist" who was "so familiar with Marxist literature" he would even quote from obscure Marxist texts. He supported getting Italy into World War I thinking it could lead to the downfall of German and Austro-Hungarian monarchies because they "repressed socialism".
