God of War III (2010)
Released for the PlayStation 3, God of War III finishes Kratos’ quest to take down the Greek gods, starting right as he scales Mount Olympus on a giant Titan. Santa Monica Studio built a custom engine to handle the PS3 hardware, enabling massive battles on top of moving Titans and pushing Kratos’ character model to over 20,000 polygons.
Alongside insane combat and new weapons like the Nemean Cestus gauntlets, every god Kratos slays triggers a global natural disaster. To destroy Zeus, Kratos rips through the Greek pantheon for key items and unlocks Pandora’s box. Upon defeating Zeus, Kratos realizes the box contained the power of Hope. Instead of surrendering that power to Athena, he impales himself with the Blade of Olympus to release Hope to surviving humanity before disappearing into the unknown.
Selling over five million copies, the game became a major PS3 system seller, defining the high of cinematic quick-time events and bringing Kratos’ original era to a close.

Hidetaka Miyazaki didn’t just create Dark Souls—his work helped define an entire genre. Beginning with Demon’s Souls and evolving through Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro and eventually Elden Ring, his approach to challenging combat, exploration and cryptic storytelling became so influential that an entire category of games is now simply called “Soulslikes.” Ironically, the man responsible for some of gaming’s most notoriously difficult experiences has openly admitted that he isn’t particularly good at action games himself.
And his influence eventually reached far beyond FromSoftware. In 2023, Miyazaki was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, becoming only the second video game developer to receive the distinction after Shigeru Miyamoto. From someone who entered the industry relatively late to a creator whose name now represents an entire philosophy of game design, Miyazaki didn’t just change FromSoftware—he left a permanent mark on gaming itself.
