πͺͺ The TIE is the physical card that proves you have legal residence in Spain. Careful: it is not the same as the NIE β the NIE is only a number, and the TIE is the card that carries that number.
The key point: you get the TIE after your residence is granted, and you have one month to apply. You must go in person: they take your fingerprints and, a few days later, you collect the card. Someone can help you with the appointment or the fee, but you go in person to the fingerprinting and to collect the card.
How it works, in general:
β’ You pay the fee (the "modelo 790-012") and fill in the "EX-17" form.
β’ You book a fingerprinting appointment and bring your grant decision, passport and a photo.
β οΈ While you wait for the TIE, your grant decision already proves your status.

TIE (Foreigner Identity Card): how to obtain it after approval β Extranjeros
How to obtain the TIE, the physical card proving your residence: you must apply in person within one month (art. 209 RD 1155/2024). Appointment, fingerprints and collection, with EX-17 and fee 790-012.

The key point: the NIE is just an identification number. It is not a permit to live or work in Spain (those are separate procedures). If you're already applying for residence, you get it automatically; if not, you request it yourself.
How it works, in general:
β’ You fill in a form (the βEX-15β) and pay a fee (the βmodelo 790-012β).

π₯ To have a family doctor in the public system you need the health card (tarjeta sanitaria). The first step is almost always being registered (empadronado) in your municipality.
Depending on your situation there are several ways to be covered:
β’ If you work (registered with Social Security), are a pensioner or a dependent family member β automatic coverage.
β’ If you have no legal residence but are registered β you can access it through a specific rule (RD 180/2026).

π Want to do procedures online instead of going to offices (taxes at AEAT, DGT, Social Security, unemploymentβ¦)? You need a digital ID: Cl@ve or the FNMT Electronic Certificate. Both are free and work for foreigners with TIE/NIE.
The difference, in short:
β’ Cl@ve β easier and enough for almost everything. The fastest way is video identification with your phone (photo of your TIE + selfie). You can also request a letter by post to your address.

π‘ Appealing an asylum refusal: what changes under the EU Pact from 12 June 2026 (administrative review no longer interrupts the judicial deadline)
π¬π§ If your asylum application in Spain has been refused and you need to appeal, there is something critical that changes from 12 June 2026:

π¬π§ π Does your document officially count for travel in Europe? The EU just updated the list.
The EU Official Journal renewed (10/07/2026) the catalogue of which Spanish documents count as a "residence permit" for moving around the rest of the Schengen area. Among them: the TIE for third-country nationals, the "rΓ©gimen comunitario" card (EU citizen's family members), the student card, the temporary protection card (Ukraine β extended until 4/03/2027) and, in a separate group, Gibraltar documents.
This is not the travel right itself β it just confirms your document counts. The practical rules (90 days in 180, what to carry) are in our Schengen travel guide.
