A Short Tribute to the Late President Muhammadu Buhari

By Adamu Musa Kanam

“It is human to err, but divine to forgive.”
I may not have agreed with President Muhammadu Buhari—neither with many of his policies nor with the direction his government took after 2015. I still struggle to reconcile the hopeful expectations of that year with the reality of the years that followed. Like many Nigerians, I felt the weight of disappointment, especially in the face of the joy that once lit up our cities and villages at the dawn of his presidency.

I’ve disagreed often—not just with his supporters, but with the idea that his administration lived up to the ideals it promised. The image of “Mr. Integrity” was, to many, betrayed by years of hardship, disillusionment, and national regression. I could write volumes outlining why I believed he should never have returned to power. And yet, amid all the criticisms and unresolved questions, one statement from the man himself continues to echo in my conscience:

“Whoever thought that there is some form of injustice on him, we are all humans. There is no doubt I hurt some people and I wish they will pardon me. Although they think that I have hurt them so much—please, pardon me.”

In those words, there is humility. There is humanity. And perhaps, even redemption.

History will debate his legacy. Scholars and citizens will judge his choices. But today, as we mark his passing, we remember that even our leaders—flawed as they may be—are human. And in the end, forgiveness may be the highest form of justice we can offer.

Rest in peace, President Muhammadu Buhari.
