Berhanu Nega (born 1958) is an Ethiopian economist, politician, and former rebel leader. He studied economics in the United States and later became a university professor.
He gained national attention when he was elected mayor of Addis Ababa in 2005, but he was not allowed to take office after disputed elections. He was later imprisoned and eventually went into exile.
While abroad, he became a key leader of an opposition movement that fought against the Ethiopian government. After political changes in 2018, he returned to Ethiopia and entered mainstream politics.
He has since served in government, including as Minister of Education.
He gained national attention when he was elected mayor of Addis Ababa in 2005, but he was not allowed to take office after disputed elections. He was later imprisoned and eventually went into exile.
