I am delighted to announce that our paper titled “Seismic Fragility Assessment and Comparative Study of Modified Performance Based Plastic Design Method for Reinforced Concrete Frames” has been accepted for publication in the ASCE Journal of Structural Design and Construction Practice.
This study addresses the limitations of the Performance-Based Plastic Design (PBPD) method, particularly its omission of post-yield stiffness, by proposing a Modified PBPD (MPBPD) framework that incorporates the post-yield stiffness ratio (rₒ) into the energy modification factor. The methodology was applied to 6-storey and 12-storey RC moment-resisting frames designed using FBD, PBPD, and MPBPD. A comprehensive seismic evaluation was conducted using nonlinear static and dynamic analyses, along with Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) and fragility assessment through the Capacity Spectrum Method. Results showed that MPBPD consistently achieved performance points within the Collapse Prevention (CP) range, reduced drift ratios by nearly 19.65% under IDA, and demonstrated the lowest probability of collapse. Spectral acceleration capacities of 1.46g at Immediate Occupancy (IO) and 5.11g at CP confirmed the superior seismic performance of MPBPD compared to conventional design methods.

I’m happy to share that my research paper on the seismic performance of steel EBF (Eccentrically Braced Frames) designed using IS 18168:2023 has been published in scientific report nature.
This is one of the first studies based on this recent Indian steel seismic code.

In this work, a detailed comparison between Force-Based Design (FBD) and Direct Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) has been carried out using nonlinear analysis. The study covers plastic hinge formation, link behavior, pushover response, and IDA-based drift performance for different building heights (3, 6, 9, and 12 storey). It also clearly explains how to properly model shear links in EBF systems, including link behavior, hinge locations, and connection detailing.
The results show that DDBD provides better control over displacement and performance levels, while also demonstrating the energy dissipation mechanism through shear links.
