Day 3 of 100 Days of Practice

Mozart gym!

Today I need to practice Mozart. I am learning the Sonata in Bb. K 333. Mozart is hard. Clarity is essential and you have to paint a nice melodic line. I have to say it is lots of fun. Not that easy. He always surprises you.

How do I warm up?

I have asked often that question. Do you do scales prior practicing? What about arpeggios? Or what type of exercises do you recommend?

What I do it is different to many other pianist. But I usually warm up a good 40-45 minutes. I start with Scarlatti, Bach, Clementi. Their music have scales and arpeggios in their music. It provides me with a good warm up and foundation. It provides movement to my fingers while also working on musicality. Playing something that is not an etude but a complete piece it is helpful for technique and tone.

So that is how I warm up. What do you do?

Day 4,

Beethoven. 3rd. Movement Sonata no 8.

These videos are usually the first take right before a period of practicing. They provide to me a raw assessment. Sometimes frustrating and honest. It is helpful and shows me the things to work on. This is the start of day 4.

Day 5 practicing was Rachmaninoff. A prelude I have always wanted to learn. Still rough. But little by little. Learning it … https://vimeo.com/675745998
And day 7 is “Bach” at it again. Improving but not there yet.

Practicing Rachmaninoff agitato section is always tough.
We will be inviting students to join the 100 days of music very soon…. :)
