a few years back, i spent a fair bit of money to install unifi equipment throughout the house; cameras, access points, switches, a few devices which were eventually upgraded to a dream machine, ... this carries the advantage that i can visualise where every byte on the network comes from and where it goes in fine detail... i can also cut off my kids' ipads much to their annoyance if they don't behave :)

i observe that my apple devices (macbooks especially) keep transferring data in large-ish amounts even while closed. that's pretty disturbing given they market themselves as privacy oriented.

in fact, the device which consistently transfers least, it appears, is the computer i type this one, which - incidentally - is running ubuntu 22.04...
