المشكلة ليست في أنّ [وسائل الإعلام والتواصل media] توفّر لنا مواضيعًا ترفيهية وممتعة، بل في أنّ جميع المواضيع صارت تُقَدَّم بصفتها مواضيعًا ترفيهية.

طبيعة التعليم وتوقّعاتنا بشأنه كلها تغيرت بالزمن الحالي. صار عدنا خلط بين ما هو مفيد وبين ما هو ممتع بحيث ديصير أصعب وأصعب الفصل بينهم. صرنا نتوقع أنّ المواد التعليمية "لازم" تكون ممتعة وما نمل أثناء "مشاهدتها" (مشاهدتها: لأن أغلب الوسائل التعليمية دتتجه للتعليم المرئي عن طريق فيديوهات اليوتيوب أو غيره)، وبنفس الوقت صرنا نتوقع أنّ المواد الترفيهية تكون مفيدة بطريقة أو بأُخرى.
Almost every show now is a documentary and a drama series at the same time, with varying degrees.

أتذكر مرة شفت فيديو للدحيح يكول بيه أنّه محتواه ترفيهي بالدرجة الأساس وما عنده رسالة عظيمة بنشر العلم والمعرفة ومن هالسوالف. بالمقابل ردة فعل الناس جانت أنهم انصدموا إلى حدّ ما من التصريح لأنهم جانوا يعتبروه محتوى تثقيفي وتعليمي و "هدفه تبسيط العلم" ومدري شنو.
هالشي يخليك تعرف إلى أي درجة احنة صرنا ما نميّز بين التعليم، اللي بطبيعته ممل ومتعِب وحتى مزعج، وبين الترفيه، اللي بطبيعته ممتع وغير مجهِد للعقل.

Someone once said that learning is a form of masochism, because you have to endure the mental pain that comes with it, and the feeling of ignorance, uselessness, and clumsiness that inevitably comes with learning anything for the first time.

All of these things stand in opposition to the "hedonism" that is natural to all forms of entertainment.

A (philosophical) survivor's guide through life

Any human, if they were to have any sense of value for their lives, must be masters of at least one thing for which they are experts of, praised for, and needed for it. It doesn't matter if it's firefighting, mathematical logic, or gardening. It simply has to be something challenging enough to keep them busy.

This could explain the higher rates of drug abuse, crime, and "moral degradation" among the lower classes of society (say, the lowest 10% of the population). Most of these crimes are committed by young males with no particular skills or interests. Since they have no prospect in life, no tomorrow to look forward to, and no rock bottom to fear falling into (because they are already IN the rock bottom) they have less reasons to stop them from committing such things. Unskillful, and unemployed young males that are regarded with disdain (by both society and family) are almost always the fuel for social unrest and disintegration. The solution is not to weed them off, because more will grow. The solution probably should start at teaching them some skills, professions, or anything useful for that matter. Basically: the solution is to find them a place in the world.
True economic and social prosperity probably starts at the lower classes, because they are the ones most problematic.

It's probably a far-reaching and incoherent conclusion, but whatever.
