Big News in Fire Safety

Class L Is Officially Here

The “Lithium Age” has officially moved beyond legacy fire classifications. In January 2026, ISO published ISO 3941:2026, introducing a dedicated fire class for Lithium-ion battery fires: Class L.

Why Class L Is a Game Changer
For years, Lithium ion incidents were managed under traditional Class A or B assumptions. Safety professionals know this approach was never fully adequate.
Lithium
ion fires behave differently due to:

Thermal runaway that creates a self-sustaining heat cycle

Extremely high energy density, producing intense and persistent heat

Toxic and hazardous by-products requiring controlled response measures

The critical need for thermal control and cooling, not just oxygen isolation

Class L formally recognizes these realities and sets the foundation for more accurate risk control.

What’s Next for Global Standards

In Europe, EN 2 currently defines Classes A, B, C, D, and F. However, alignment is accelerating. CEN/TC 70 is already developi
