Announcement: New Design on EdChess 🎨

That's right, friends! Right now, we are seriously refining the interface, and EdChess will never look the same again: the release of our new design will happen very soon 🔥

Over the past few months, our team has been hard at work creating a fresh and more enjoyable design for players.

Thus, at the intersection of your feedback and modern trends, the concept of the new EdChess design was born 👩‍🎨

We understand how important it is for the interface to be intuitive and not cause any difficulties.

Of course, you will soon be able to test our first version with the updated design.

And, naturally, we are listening to your feedback, so the design will be gradually refined and improved ❤️

What do we think about the matchmaking system? ⚔️

The EdChess team understands how frustrating it can be when a beginner faces a grandmaster and gets defeated in a dozen moves.

And we understand that professional players get bored when they are repeatedly matched with players who open with a4.

Our team believes the following:

The strong should play with the strong, and beginners should play with beginners.

Perhaps the most observant among you have already noticed that the rating system is now available in Crypto Game! 💪🏻

Currently, the rating is not displayed for players, but soon everyone will be able to see their rating in real time.

From now on, the system considers your rating and your opponent's rating for a more comfortable gaming experience.

And we will definitely refine and polish it to ensure that chess brings you joy and everything is fair ❤️

How about a game on a Saturday evening?

Your EdChess team ♟️

How will matchmaking be improved? 🧠

Following up on the previous post, we want to reveal several specific steps our team has taken to model an adequate ranking system.

One of these steps is an advanced calibration system, which is coming in one of the future releases

What is the calibration system?

Soon, players will be able to declare their skill level themselves and confirm it through practice games with our bots.

For example, a player with an ELO rating of 1900 will be able to prove their chess skill by defeating a bot of corresponding strength, and they will no longer have to play against low-ranked opponents.

And by the way! In the future, strong players will be able to play for a greater number of TON 👏

What if I don't know my skill level?

In this case, we will easily assist the user in determining their level 🙂

We believe that the calibration system is crucial for comfortable play, as each player will be able to identify the most suitable opponent in all modes — including in the Crypto Game — from their very first game.

There will be even more insights in the upcoming posts! We wish everyone great games 🔥

Your EdChess team.

Position of EdChess on the situation with Pavel Durov ✈️

Friends! As you all know, on August 24, the founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested in France and taken into custody.

We are deeply immersed in these news and are as concerned about his fate as you are. Privacy and freedom of speech should not be punished.

Today, there were the first noticeable developments in Durov's case: he was released from custody, and the temporary detainment was replaced by preparation for trial.

But we believe in the father-founder of Telegram more than ever! We know: Pavel will handle this. Because the truth is on his side! 💪🏻

❗️You can join us in supporting his release by signing Telegram's official petition at this link.

Don't hesitate: maybe these 30 seconds will help save years of an innocent person's life

⚡️ The schedule for the main chess event of the year has been published!

FIDE has shared the schedule for the World Championship match between Ding Liren and Gukesh Dhamma Raj in Singapore. The opening ceremony will take place on November 20, and the battle between the Chinese champion and the winner of the Candidates Tournament from India will begin on November 25.

We will find out who will take the crown after 14 rounds of the match.

In the main part of the match, there will be a time control of 2 hours for the first 40 moves, followed by an additional 30 minutes after the 41st move, with 30 seconds added per move.

If the score reaches 7:7, there will be a tiebreak with a time control of 15+10, then 10+5, and if necessary, 3+2. There will be no Armageddon!

The total prize fund is $2.5 million. Interestingly, according to the regulations, each player will receive $200,000 for every win. The remaining amount will be split evenly.

Share your thoughts on the opponents in the comments — Ding or Gukesh? 👇

Big update in EdChess: we've improved the connection, refreshed the interface, and revamped the board!

From a recent announcement about the new design, it's clear we've focused on enhancing the app's look. We've made the interface smoother and more intuitive. What else was left to do?

We needed to work directly on the battlefield—the chessboard. Now, the board features a new color palette and style for the pieces! Additionally, we've significantly increased the responsiveness and smoothness of the playing field. In other words, the bullet time control is just around the corner!

Other updates include an improved player matchmaking system based on their ratings and enhancements to the app's stability: we've sped up reconnections and interactions with the TON ecosystem.

But enough talk—try out the new update right now!

The 2024 Chess Olympiad Kicks Off in Budapest

The Chess Olympiad has started in the heart of Europe, Hungary, and will run until September 22. This massive event has brought together the world's best chess players, all competing for the title of the strongest national team.

At the last Olympiad in 2022, Uzbekistan took home the top prize. Who will be the best this time?

What is it?

The Chess Olympiad is a major international tournament where teams from over 190 countries battle it out for trophies and medals.

Besides the open tournament, there’s also a women's section. The Olympiad offers both team and individual awards 🏆

What are the rules?

• The tournament follows the Swiss system and consists of 11 rounds. Each match features teams of four players, plus one reserve, and the results count toward the team’s overall score.

• Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 more minutes, with an additional 30 seconds per move. Players can't agree to a draw before the 30th move, keeping the games more intense.

• The team with the most points in the open section wins the Hamilton-Russell Cup. The top team in the women’s section will take home the Vera Menchik Cup. Teams also compete for the Nona Gaprindashvili Cup, awarded based on combined performance in both sections.

Who to watch?

Among the top-rated teams are the USA, India, China, and Uzbekistan.

World-class chess stars will face off, including Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Fabiano Caruana, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and the young world title contender, Gukesh Dommaraju.

⚪️ Are you following the Olympiad?

Chess Speaks for Itself — On Screen!

In 2025, Netflix will release a documentary about the scandal between Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann that rocked the chess world in 2022.

After an unexpected loss to Niemann in a tournament, Carlsen hinted at possible cheating by the young player, but offered no proof. This incident led to major investigations and lawsuits, shaking the chess community 💣

The documentary will be part of the Untold series, which focuses on some of the biggest scandals in sports. It will feature interviews with key figures, including Carlsen himself. According to those involved, the film might reveal some surprising details about the scandal.

Netflix has already sparked interest in chess with the series "The Queen's Gambit". The new film about Carlsen and Niemann could once again bring millions of people back to the game.

Looking forward to it?

❤️ — Adding to my watchlist
😎 — Chess speaks for itself
🤔 — Doubt this documentary will be as popular as The Queen's Gambit

New Challenge with Eddy & Cheddy

For over two months, EdChess players have been taking on the chess bots Eddy and Cheddy and earning TON tokens.

For the newcomers: these are simple bots that sometimes show up instead of real opponents in our Crypto Game mode 👾.

Since the bots are pretty weak, you can have some fun with them. For instance, players have been rewarded for wins, losses, fast and long checkmates.

⭐️ Now, one of the challenges has changed:

🤬 Losing → Hikaru's Rage

To earn this achievement, you need to promote at least five pawns and, of course, win the game.

The other challenges stay the same for now, but we'll be changing another one soon, so stay tuned! Feel free to drop your ideas in the comments—who knows, the best one might get added.

We post your results in our chat daily and give out 0.1 TON for every completed challenge!

💬 So, what’s your move?

🔥 — I'll give it a try right now
😎 — Easy win
🤔 — Okay, I guess

What can we learn from the chess masters?

Chess is an incredible legacy. Passing down knowledge plays a key role in the growth of the game: each new champion learns from the greats of the past, and we, in turn, learn from them.

Recently, FIDE recognized Magnus Carlsen and Judit Polgar as the greatest grandmasters of all time. It’s no surprise: Carlsen has shown how persistence and self-confidence can lead to victory, even in tough positions. He teaches us to fight until the end and seize every opportunity 💪

Judit, on the other hand, proved that limits exist only in our minds. Her aggressive and creative style inspires courage and independent thinking, breaking stereotypes and opening new horizons in chess.

👑 Let’s remember a few other masters and what we can learn from them:

⭐️ Jose Capablanca

Known as the "The Chess Machine", Capablanca was a true endgame master. He showed how small advantages can be turned into inevitable victories. His games teach us to use every move efficiently, turning minimal chances into maximum results.

⭐️ Alexander Alekhine

Alekhine demonstrated the power of attacking play and complex combinations. Studying his games helps develop tactical vision and the ability to find unconventional solutions.

⭐️ Mikhail Botvinnik

Botvinnik, the "Patriarch", emphasized the importance of deep analysis and careful preparation. His methods teach us to approach the game systematically and build long-term plans, blending the science and art of chess.

⭐️ Mikhail Tal

Known as the "The Magician from Riga", Tal inspires us to take a creative approach and be willing to take risks for an advantage. His sacrificial combinations show how intuition and imagination can triumph over pure calculation.

⭐️ Bobby Fischer

The legendary Fischer was known for his incredible work ethic and attention to detail. His approach teaches us the importance of thoroughly understanding all phases of the game and being mentally prepared for competition.

⭐️ Anatoly Karpov

Karpov controlled the game positionally, denying his opponent any chance to become active. His style teaches us to anticipate our opponent's plans and neutralize them before they become threats. It's a lesson in strategic thinking and patience in reaching your goal.

⭐️ Viswanathan Anand

Anand shows the ability to successfully play in different styles and quickly find the best moves. His games teach us the value of flexibility and making fast, accurate decisions.

❤️ Which masters have inspired you? Whose games did you primarily study to improve? Share in the comments!

India's Chess Scene is Making Huge Strides

You’ve probably seen the meme where Vishy, like Master Splinter, guides a group of young ninja turtles—India’s rising chess stars. Well, just recently, both the Indian men’s and women’s teams took home gold at the Chess Olympiad, so that meme is quickly becoming a reality.

Let’s break down why India is standing out so much on the global chess stage right now:

⭐️ The "Anand Effect"

Viswanathan Anand, India’s legendary grandmaster and the 15th World Chess Champion, sparked a chess revolution. His success ignited a nationwide interest in chess, opening doors for young grandmasters and inspiring an entire generation of players.

⭐️ The Chess Boom in India

More and more Indian players are joining the global elite every year, making chess even more popular among the country’s youth. Just look at the World Cup last year—four Indian players made it to the quarterfinals and that was a new record. Two male players and one female player from India are currently ranked in the world’s top 10!

⭐️ Support at Every Level

Chess in India gets support from all directions—from academies to international tournaments. Government backing, private sponsors, and passionate enthusiasts have created great conditions for nurturing young talent. This funding has played a key role in preparing grandmasters like Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh.

⭐️ The Young Generation of Grandmasters

India’s rising stars, like Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Erigaisi, have already reached incredible heights at a young age. Praggnanandhaa beat Magnus Carlsen at 16, and Gukesh is soon expected to challenge for the world champion’s crown!

⭐️ The Chess Ecosystem

India’s Global Chess League brings a team spirit to what’s traditionally an individual sport. Young players train at Anand’s academies and with other grandmasters, ensuring a strong pipeline of new talent for years to come.

By the way, EdChess is also aiming to build a comprehensive ecosystem for its products, which will help develop chess as a discipline for players of all levels.

💬 The Indian chess scene is slowly starting to dominate, much like the Soviet Union once did. What do you think is helping Indian players shine so brightly lately?

Chess Skynet is Here: A Movie About Kasparov vs. Deep Blue

Reading through our chat discussions about unfair play, it’s hard not to think about where it all began. And now there’s a new reason for that— a movie about the battle between man and machine.

The chess drama Rematch, a six-part series, covers the legendary 1997 match where chess genius Garry Kasparov once again faced off against a machine 🤖

This was the second match with Deep Blue—Kasparov had beaten the engine the year before. But this time, the supercomputer had been upgraded!

Garry is played by actor Christian Cooke. According to reviews, he really gets into the role of the eccentric Garry more and more as the series goes on. He even worked on perfecting the accent.

🤔 There are a few small discrepancies though:

• In the movie, the matches are held in a theater with a large audience, but in reality, they took place in a private room with no crowd;
• Kasparov’s room is shown filled with computers, when in reality, he only had a couple of laptops;
• The characters were given new names: for example, "Paul" might be standing in for real-life chess player Joel Benjamin, and the Deep Blue developer is called "PC" instead of the real "CB" (Crazy Bird).

💬 Has anyone here watched it yet? How well do you think the chess drama reflects reality, and what details stood out to you?

❤️ — Added to my watchlist, will check it out
🔥 — Watched it already, loved it
👍 — More chess movies, please!
🌚 — The movie was a letdown

🔎 The Cheating Scandal of the Year

Grandmaster Kirill Shevchenko has been kicked out of the Spanish Club Championship over cheating allegations.

What happened? After round two, Shevchenko’s opponent, Grandmaster Francisco Vallejo Pons, noticed some strange behavior and reported to the arbiter that Kirill was leaving the playing hall way too often. An investigation was launched, and things got even more interesting 🤔

A phone was found in a bathroom stall with a handwritten note in Spanish:
"Don't touch! The phone was left so the owner could answer it at night!"

A cleaning lady spotted the phone on day one, but it mysteriously disappeared after the first round... only to reappear the next day! 🧐 Organizers kept an eye on the stall and noticed Shevchenko was a frequent visitor.

This is one of the biggest cheating scandals in recent chess history. What do you think?

🙏 — Kirill is innocent
🌚 — Definitely cheating
💔 — He was falsely accused
