Dec122023ArticleOHL Power Rankings: Week 11 – Dec. 11, 2023Category: ArticleDecember 12, 2023Another week, and another team on top of the OHL Power Rankings as the Soo Greyhounds sprint into number one! Keep an eye on another canine crew as the Brantford Bulldogs climb four spots this week.
Who’s up:
Soo Greyhounds – up one spot to #1 this week
The climb continues for the Greyhounds, who reach the top of the mountain in Week 11 on the heels of four consecutive wins. Andrew Gibson’s game-winner put the Hounds past the Sudbury Wolves 3-2 in overtime last Wednesday. Things didn’t start well for the Soo against the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday, but they’d rally from a 3-0 deficit with a five-goal third period to win 7-5. Sault Ste. Marie edged the London Knights 5-4 at home on Sunday as Jack Beck had two goals and an assist. The Hounds are 20-8-2-0. They hit the road heading into the holiday break, with another crack at the Kitchener Rangers coming up on Friday at the Aud.
Ottawa 67’s – up two spots to #4 this week
Tied for the Eastern Conference lead, the 67’s defeated the Oshawa Generals in overtime before a split against their nemesis, the Peterborough Petes. The Barber Poles fell to Peterborough at home on Friday, falling to 0-3 against the Petes this season before rebounding at the PMC on Sunday afternoon as Max Donoso was brilliant, making 39 saves in a 2-1 win. Ottawa continues to find success playing their brand of low-scoring hockey, surrendering a league-low 83 goals on the season.
North Bay Battalion – up two spots to #5 this week
The Troops were edged at home by Kingston on Thursday, but came back strong on Friday night in Mississauga to beat their divisional counterpart the Steelheads by a score of 5-3. Dalyn Wakely scored his first career OHL hat-trick in the win as the Battalion come out of the week tied with Sudbury for second place in the Central Division. The win over Mississauga pushes North Bay ahead in this week’s Power Rankings.
Sudbury Wolves – up two spots to #8 this week
The Wolves can score, and they showed that again this past week with back-to-back eight-goal explosions in wins over Niagara and Kingston. Sudbury was edged 3-2 in overtime by the Soo Greyhounds to start the week, but have points in their last five outings, owning a 15-10-2-1 record. With Jakub Vondras heading off for World Junior duty, goaltender Marcus Vandenberg joined the Wolves on Sunday and made 21 saves to get the win in his debut.
London Knights – up two spots to #9 this week
After a couple weeks sliding down the list, the Knights bounced back nicely with a 4-1 win over Sarnia, a commanding 7-3 win over last week’s top-ranked team, the Saginaw Spirit, and a competitive 5-4 loss in Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday. The Knights were without their big horses in the weekend finale as Easton Cowan, Denver Barkey, Oliver Bonk and Kasper Halttunen all have potential World Junior duty on the horizon.
Brantford Bulldogs – up four spots to #10 this week
The Bulldogs have lingered in the bottom half for much of the first two months of the season, but they get a healthy bump in Week 11, having shown they can skate with the big boys. Brantford doubled-up Peterborough to start the week before a pair of highly entertaining games against the Kitchener Rangers. The Bulldogs blew a 5-1 lead at the Aud on Friday, falling 6-5 in overtime. They returned the favour a night later at the Civic Centre, rallying from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Rangers 5-4 on Nick Lardis’ overtime winner to complete a hat-trick. Brantford sits two points back of Ottawa, holding down second place in the East Division with a record of 14-9-5-1.
Oshawa Generals – up one spot to #15 this week
The Gennies fell 3-2 in overtime against Ottawa to begin the week, before taking back-to-back road wins over West Division opponents in Windsor and Sarnia. Connor Lockhart put home his fourth career OHL hat-trick on Saturday in Windsor. First-year netminder Noah Bender picked-up his first career OHL victory on Sunday in Sarnia.

Dec132023ArticleGenerals search for third straight win hosting MississaugaCategory: ArticleDecember 13, 2023Oshawa, Ont., – It has been a while, but the Oshawa Generals are returning home to face the Mississauga Steelheads in the first game of a home-and-home.
The Gens are wrapping up a five-game road trip where they picked up three wins taking down Brantford 5-2, Windsor 6-3, and Sarnia 4-1. Oshawa finished their time away from the Tributes Communities Centre 3-2.
Mississauga sits in first place in the Central Division and sit in a tie for first in the Eastern Conference with the Peterborough Petes. The Steelheads are up and down right now, winning two of their last four games and dropping the others to Barrie and North Bay.
Last Meeting
The last time these two hit the ice together was four games into the season where it was the Gens coming out victorious winning the game 4-1 at home.
It was two three-point performances from Luca D’Amato and Rasmus Kumpulianen who drove things offensively as the defenceman scored just before the halfway point of the first.
After going up two goals in the first the Generals would give one up early in the second, but Jacob Oster shut the door from there, while the Gens would add two more in the second and put the game to rest.
Player to Watch (Oshawa)
Tyler Graham: The Cambridge native has set a career-high in goals, assists, and points this season scoring three goals and adding four assists for seven points. The forward is riding a three-game point streak with four assists.
Player to Watch (Mississauga)
Luke Misa: An undersized forward from Oakville, Ontario Misa has a career-high in points and assists picking up 31 assists and 44 points so far this season. The third-year player is on a five-game point-streak, including a game with a hat trick and another three-point game.

Dec132023ArticleOffense explodes in 6-2 win over MississaugaCategory: ArticleDecember 13, 2023Oshawa, Ont., – It was a big return home for the Generals, as Connor Lockhart scored a hat trick as the Oshawa Generals beat the Mississauga Steelheads 6-2 for their third straight victory.
Beckett Sennecke had a three-point night and Calum Ritchie had a pair of assists while Jacob Oster made 20 saves on the way to picking up the win.
It was the Steelheads opening the scoring just under four minutes into the game as Angus MacDonell threw the puck on net creating a rebound for Porter Martone to put into the net giving Mississauga a 1-0 lead.
That lead would grow a short while later once again through Martone who striped the Oshawa defenceman and beat Oster for his second of the night making it 2-0 Steelheads.
But before the first intermission, the lead would get cut in half when Lockhart found himself in on net all alone, the over-ager made no mistake beating Ryerson Leenders making it a 2-1 game.
A little over halfway through the second, the Gens would tie it up as Luca Marrelli found Dylan Roobroeck coming off the bench, the big man set his sights and lasered a shot into the top corner tying the game at 2-2.
Less than five minutes later the Generals found themselves out front as Stuart Rolofs found Delisle on a 2-on-1 and the rookie buried his second of the year giving Oshawa their first lead of the game. Late in the second, Tyler Graham put a loose puck into the back of the net seemingly doubling the Generals lead, but after a quick review, it was deemed that the play was offside.
Under two minutes into the third period, Oshawa found themselves on a powerplay, when Sennecke made a nice slap pass to Lockhart who tapped home the nice pass giving the Gens a 4-2 lead.
With just under five minutes to go in the game, Lockhart would complete his hat trick when he finished off a 2-on-1 giving the Gens a 5-2 lead. Oshawa was not done there scoring a sixth goal on the powerplay as Sennecke found the puck laying in the crease knocking it into the back of the net making it 6-2 Generals.
These same two teams will clash again this Friday in Mississauga, with the Generals searching for win number four in-a-row. The Generals return home on Sunday for their final game before the holiday break, hosting the rival Peterborough Petes at 6:05.

Dec152023ArticleFriday night visit with the SteelheadsCategory: ArticleDecember 15, 2023Oshawa, Ont., – For the second time in three nights the Oshawa Generals will hit the ice to take on the Mississauga Steelheads. The Generals look to continue the momentum in Mississauga before they take on the Peterborough Petes at home on Sunday.
Mississauga got things going early last we saw them when Porter Martone scored twice in the opening period. This lead was quickly cut in half with Connor Lockhart when he found himself in on net all alone. The Generals found the net five more times throughout the game to make for an explosive win against the team leading the Central Division. The Steelheads up and down seem to have continued their up-and-down ways with a 5-3-2-0 record over the team’s last 10 games.
Oshawa is currently riding a three-game win streak, in those three games the team has scored a total of 16 goals while only allowing six in the net. A big part of this offensive outburst has been Connor Lockhart who has scored seven goals in those games. Since being with the Generals, Lockhart has secured 10 goals with 16 assists for a total of 26 points.
Tonight marks the third meeting between the Steelheads and Generals, with Oshawa holding a 2-0-0-0 edge on the series, with one win being secured by a hat-trick from Connor Lockhart. This win came in the team’s previous meeting.
The Steelheads sit first in the Central Division with 36 points while the Generals sit in fifth with 28 points in the East. The Generals have found themselves a playoff spot while finding consistency in their lineup and proving they can compete against anyone with a full lineup.

Dec152023ArticleGenerals extend win streak to fourCategory: ArticleDecember 15, 2023Oshawa, Ont., – Stuart Rolofs and Connor Lockhart each had a pair of goals as the Oshawa Generals take down the Mississauga Steelheads 7-3. Dylan Roobroeck picked up his 100th Ontario Hockey League point and Tristan Delisle had a three-point night as the Gens extended their winning streaks to four games.
It was Mississauga Breaking the deadlock in this one when Porter Martone skated in over the blue line toe dragging the Generals’ defenceman before putting it right on the stick of Angus MacDonell who tapped it in to make it 1-0 Steelheads halfway through the first. Oshawa would answer less than a minute later when Luca D’Amato fired one on net beating the Mississauga netminder over the glove and tying the game at 1-1. The Steelheads once again broke the tie. This time it was Martone tapping in a rebound after Jacob Oster stretched out taking one away from Luke Misa as the Steelheads took a 2-1 lead.
Coming out of the first intermission it was the Generals tying this one up. Tristan Delisle made a nice play behind the Steelheads’ net getting the puck to Tyler Graham who found Rolofs in front of the net tucking in his eighth goal of the season making it 2-2. A little under five minutes later the Generals would get their first lead of the game when Roobroeck made a nice no-look pass to Matthew Buckley who made no mistake scoring his team-leading 15th goal of the season making it 3-2 Gens. But, with just under a minute and a half left in the second it was Martone again. The Steelheads winger took the puck wide before shooting it over the shoulder of Oster tying the game at 3-3. That was not the end of the period as the Generals would respond with 11 seconds left as Luca Marrelli fired a stretch pass that found Rolofs who slid it to Lockhart for a one-time blast beating Leenders and restoring the Oshawa lead at 4-3.
Over halfway through the third Rolofs big night would continue as he tried making a pass to Lockhart, but the puck took a deflection off a skate for his second goal of the night and fourth point of the game as Oshawa took a 5-3 lead. After a couple of Steelheads penalties, the Generals found themselves on the right side of a 5-on-3 where it was Lockhart stepping in off the blueline shooting one through a screen beating the Mississauga goalie making it 6-3 Oshawa.
The Generals did not stop there keeping the good times rolling it was Tristan Delisle joining in on the fun skating in on a 2-on-1 keeping it and rifling it off the crossbar and in, making it 7-3 Gens.
Oshawa will return home on Sunday for their final game before the holiday break, hosting the rival Peterborough Petes at 6:05.

Dec172023ArticleGenerals look to gain fifth straight win against PeterboroughCategory: ArticleDecember 17, 2023Oshawa, Ont., – It is the last game before the Christmas break as the Oshawa Generals take on rivals the Peterborough Petes.
The Generals are playing some of their best hockey season as the team rides a four-game win streak. Over that span, the offence has been clicking on all cylinders scoring 23 goals and outscoring their opponents by 14.
With this recent form of play, the team has climbed out of the bottom of the East Division and sit just two points behind the Petes with a game in hand.
Peterborough comes into this one on the opposite end of the spectrum. The Petes have been fluttering dropping each of their last three games while they are 2-8 over their last 10 games.
With the World Junior Championship approaching both teams are missing important players as each team’s leading scorer is away. The Generals are down Rasmus Kumpulainen who has 27 points in 27 games while the Petes are down Owen Beck who has 30 points in 25 games.
Last Meeting
It was one to forget last time out as the Generals blew a five-goal lead dropping the game 6-5 in overtime.
It was a start only an Oshawa fan could draw up as the Gens came out and scored five goals in the first. Both Rasmus Kumpulainen and Beckett Sennecke found the net twice while Calum Ritchie had a goal and an assist.
After the first, it was all Petes scoring six unanswered including the overtime winner. Beck was the catalyst of the comeback scoring a hattrick and adding an assist, while it was the Petes Captain Donavon McCoy scoring the winner and adding three helpers.
Player to Watch (Oshawa)
Connor Lockhart: Since joining the Generals from the Petes the over-ager has gotten back to his old ways picking up 18 points in 15 games. The undersized winger is on fire scoring nine goals in the last four games.
Player to Watch (Peterborough)
Ryder McIntyre: The former Oshawa Generals winger has brought his physical play to the Petes finding his way onto the score sheet with a pair of assists so far in his time with Peterborough. The Stouffville, Ontario native spent the majority of the 22-23 season with the Generals as well as the start of this season.

Dec172023ArticleGenerals win fifth straight game against PetesCategory: ArticleDecember 17, 2023Oshawa, Ont., – Three Oshawa Generals players had multi-point games as the Generals took down their rivals the Peterborough Petes 5-1 in their last game before Christmas.
Jacob Oster made 22 saves on 23 shots, while the Gens got goals from five different goal-scorers on their way to a five-game win streak.
Oshawa kicked the scoring off in this one as Lockhart created a turnover in the Petes’ end before throwing the puck on net banking it off the pad of Liam Sztuska and in for a 1-0 Gens lead on their first shot of the game. Peterborough would answer, and after some sustained offensive zone time, Jax Dubois pounced on a rebound and knocked it in the net to tie the game at 1-1.
With just over two minutes to go in the third the forecheck paid off again this time it was Dylan Roobroeck striping a Petes defenceman, the big man played a little give-and-go with Matthew Buckley before ringing one of the post. Luckily the puck came right back to him, and the New York Rangers prospect made no mistake the second time around making it 2-1 Oshawa.
Halfway through the second, that lead would double, Luca Marrelli made a pass to Beckett Sennecke who was cutting across the front of the net, and the skilled winger was able to control the pass before beating a sprawled-out Petes’ goalie making it 3-1 Gens.
In the last minute of the second period, the Gens found themselves working the puck around in the Petes’ end, Marrelli found Calum Ritchie in the slot all alone and the Generals centre fired it past Sztuska giving the Gens a 4-1 lead.
It was a quick start to the third period, as just 10 seconds into the frame it was Ritchie getting stuck in on the forecheck finding Rolofs who was sitting on the doorstep to redirect it into the Petes net making it 5-1 Oshawa.
The Oshawa Generals will return home after the holidays on Thursday, December 28th taking on the Brantford Bulldogs at 7:05pm.

Trio of Generals named to 2024 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects GameCategory: ArticleDecember 19, 2023Oshawa, Ont., – In partnership with the Ontario Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League, the Oshawa Generals are proud to announce Generals forward Beckett Sennecke, and Generals defencemen Ben Danford and Luca Marrelli have been named to the 2024 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game on January 24th, in Moncton., N.B.
Sennecke, the Toronto, Ont., native was one of the Generals’ first-round picks in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, taken eighth overall. In his rookie season a year ago, Sennecke finished second in league rookie scoring, behind only exceptional status player Michael Misa of the Saginaw Spirit. In 61 games with the Generals, Sennecke scored 20 goals and added 35 assists for 55 points.
So far this season, the 6’3 tall winger has appeared in 27 games, scoring 9 goals and 16 assists for 25 points.
Danford, from Madoc, Ont., was the Generals’ second first-round pick in the 2022 draft, after receiving a compensatory pick for a previous non-committed pick. Danford was selected 11th overall at the OHL Priority selection. In his rookie campaign, Danford appeared in 63 games for the Generals, scoring four times and adding 17 assists from the blue line.
In 30 games this season, Danford has scored 1 goal and 19 assists for a first-half total of 20 points.
Rounding out the trio of teammates representing the Generals is defenceman Luca Marrelli. The Toronto, Ont., native was taken in the 5th round, 81st overall at the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. As a late birthday, Marrelli has now played two full seasons with the Generals. In 2021-2022, his rookie year, Marrelli appeared in 62 games and tallied 12 assists. Last season, he played in 58 games, but scored five goals and added 23 assists for 28 points.
This season, in 30 games, Marrelli currently leads the Generals in points by a defenceman with 25. His 2 goals and 23 assists are also good enough for the top six in Generals scoring overall.
In the preliminary NHL Central Scouting rankings back in October, Sennecke received an ‘A’ rating (projecting to be a first-round selection), while Danford and Marrelli received a ‘B’ rating (projecting a 2nd/3rd-round selection).
