As far as writing a high band essay is concerned, the importance of a good introduction cannot overstated. It's not only your first chance to leave a positive impression on the examiner, but also the perfect moment to boost your TR.

Usually, after I finish teaching my students the right way to write introductions, we go over a list of common mistakes students make right at the beginning:

โ€“ Talking too generally about the topic;
โ€“ Not including a thesis statement;
โ€“ Trying to paraphrase every single word in question;
โ€“ Writing generic, memorized sentences;
โ€“ Getting stuck in the introduction.

Above all, however, make sure your writing is understandable. A lot of students write stuff only they can understand, and some of them actually expect a good score for that. Let me give you an example of a bad introduction:

Nowadays, there are numerous points of view about the existence of wild animals in our current century. By not having the same views of some groups who regard caring about the survival of creatures as spending money aimlessly, I completely disagree with that option because they have significant impact on mankind's life.

Forget the grammar errors for a moment โ€“ can you make any sense of this introduction? By the way, the question was: "Wild animals have no place in the 21st century, so protecting them is a waste of money. To what extent do you agree?"

Personally, I would give this introduction a solid 4.0, largely because I can't follow his train of thinking at all. Clarity, as I explain to my students, is the key to a high band in IELTS Writing. Here's a shorter, yet million times better introduction:

People have different views regarding the preservation of wild animals. In my opinion, spending money on them is not a waste of resources, as I will now discuss. (28 words)

๐Ÿ”˜ IELTS LISTENING PRACTICE TEST 2021 WITH ANSWERS | 05.08.2021
TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN QUESTIONS: TRICKY QUESTIONS THAT THE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS ANSWER INCORRECTLY AND LOSE MARKS

Some time ago we made a quiz story on Instagram. And the results we got were really unexpected. Can you imagine? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ 96 out of 111 of students (86%) answered incorrectly! Let's analyze the task.

QUESTION 1:

First, let's try to understand the meaning of the statement.

Question: John didn't have enough money to buy a car. So he took a loan at the bank. What does this mean? This means that John didn't have his own money. So he borrowed the money to buy a car at the bank. This statement is more or less clear to everybody and requires no further explanation.

What does the reading passage say?

Reading passage: John didn't have enough money to buy a car. So he considered an opportunity of taking a loan. This sentence confused 86% of the students who took part in the quiz. What does this sentence mean? We should focus on the expression 'consider an opportunity'. If you consider an opportunity of doing something, you just weigh all pros and cons. You just think about the good and bad parts of some decision. And after that people make a decision TO DO something or NOT TO DO this. The reading passage tells us that John considered an opportunity of taking a loan. But we don't know whether John decided to take a loan or not. Imagine someone offered you a job. And you said 'Thanks. I will consider your offer' What does it mean? It means you'll think about this offer, but even if you promise to think about it, it doesn't guarantee that you will accept this offer. That's why the answer is 'NOT GIVEN'.

QUESTION 2:
The next day we changed the wording a little and made another quiz on Instagram. Much to our surprise, 61 out of 96 (63%) students answered this question incorrectly. Here it is.

Question: John didn't have enough money to buy a car. So he took a loan at the bank. The question is the same as the first one. But read the passage very carefully.

Reading passage: John considered an opportunity of taking a loan, but he quickly realized that he wouldn't be able to provide all the necessary documents for the bank to approve his loan application. We know from the reading passage that John wanted to take a loan. He weighed all pros and cons. As a result, he understood that taking a loan is impossible because he doesn't have all the necessary documents. So it is obvious that he DID NOT take a loan. That's why the answer is 'FALSE'.

TEACHER, HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY LISTENING?

This is a huge question. But we are small people. We cannot handle huge questions, so we cut down the size. How can I improve my focus in listening? How can I catch the details? I have got a problem with spelling.

The correct way to tackle listening is giving specific questions. So first take your last listening practice into your hands and think: hm what one problem bugs me most? Then find a solution to that problem. Got it?

Make the most of your Listening test:

    ๐Ÿƒ if you cannot hear the audio clearly, let a member of staff know straightaway

       ๐Ÿƒ follow the instructions carefully; they may be different to practice or previous tests

   ๐Ÿƒ listen for the specific information you want

      ๐Ÿƒtry and anticipate what the speaker will say; this will require concentration

      ๐Ÿƒdo not worry if there is a word you do not understand; you may not need to use it

    ๐Ÿƒ if you do not know the answer to a question, attempt it but do not waste time; move quickly onto the next one

      ๐Ÿƒ be careful with your spelling and grammar

      ๐Ÿƒ do not panic if you think the topic is too difficult or the speaker is too fast; relax and tune in

     ๐Ÿƒ read, write and listen at the same time

     ๐Ÿƒ  focus precisely on what you are asked to do in completion type questions

      ๐Ÿƒ pay attention to the word limit; for example, if you are asked to complete a sentence using no more than two words, if the correct answer is โ€˜leather coatโ€™, the answer โ€˜coat made of leatherโ€™ would be incorrect

   ๐Ÿƒ if the question asks you to complete the note โ€˜in theโ€ฆโ€™ and the correct answer is โ€˜morningโ€™, note that โ€˜in the morningโ€™ would be incorrect; the correct answer is 'morning'

       ๐Ÿƒ attempt all questions; there are no penalties for incorrect answers

       ๐Ÿƒ check your answers
