This is the charge carried by an ion . It can also be defined as the number of valence electron of an element

Na= The oxidation number here is 0
Na+= The oxidation number here is the charge =+1

       USES OF OXIDATION NUMBER
- It is used in the iupac system for naming a compound
- it can also be used to determine the group to which an atom belongs to in the periodic table
- it can be used to half balance a cell
- it also helps to determine the atom oxidized or reduced

         RULES FOR ASSIGNING OXIDATION NUMBER
1 The oxidation number of an element, ion radical is equal to the charge carried by it. i.e Na+= +1 , Ca2+= +2 , Al3+= +3

2 The oxidation number of  a neutral element or a neutral compound is equal to zero i.e H2O is 0, H2SO4 is equal to 0 and NaOH is equal to 0

3 The oxidation number of group 1 elements is +1 , that is Na+= +1  , K+= +1,
- that of group 2 is +2 that is Ca2+ =+2  , Mg2+ = +2,
-And that of group 3 elements is +3 that is Al3+ =+3
-That of group 7 elements is -1, that is Br-, F- , I-, Cl- e.t.c

4 The oxidation number of oxygen is always -2 except in peroxides H2O2 , here it is -1

5 The oxidation number of hydrogen is +1 except in hydride where it is -1
