RULES OF CONCORD

1. Proximity Concord: Proximity means nearness. When two subjects are linked or correlated by neither-nor/ either-or, the verb to be used will be determined by the subject nearest to the verb i.e the subject that comes after 'nor' or the subject after 'or'

➡️Either Etim or you are to go ( Don't forget you and I go with plural verb)

To be sure of your answer, detach the sentence

➡️Either Udoh or the boys are foolish
('The boys' is plural so it will go with plural verb )

2. CONCORDS OF PERCENTAGES AND FRACTIONS
When a percentage or fraction is used as a subject of a sentence and it is immediately followed by "of", it is the noun or pronoun that comes after the percentage or fraction that controls the verb. If the noun or pronoun is singular; a singular verb follows but if the noun or pronoun is plural, plural verb follows.

SYLLABLE STRESS
A stressed syllable has a longer, louder, and higher sound than the other syllables in the word.
Syllables with the schwa sound in them are rarely the stressed syllable.
Rule 1. When a two syllable word can be both a verb and a noun or adjective, the verb form is 
usually stressed on the second syllable, and the noun or adjective form is stressed on the first 
syllable.
Example.
Everyone in our class is present today. (adjective) PREsent
She gave her friend a lovely present. (noun) PREsent
The students will present their speeches on Monday. (verb) preSENT
Rule 2. Prefixes and Suffixes are not usually stressed
Examples:

Rule 3. Words with some suffixes are usually stressed on the syllable just before the suffix.
