Some nouns have the definite article the before then

They include the following

1. The United Nation
The United States
The United Kingdom
The USSR

Note:
This category will all attract singular verbs after them

Example
The United States is rich (not are)

The United Nations works hard (not work)

2. Definite article 'the' is used before Newspaper and Magazines

The Guardian, The Daily Times

Wrong: I want to buy Guardian

Right: I want to buy the Guardian

3. Definite article 'the' is used before Organizations

The Carniege Organization

4. Definite article 'the' is used before plural proper nouns

The Netherlands
The Midlands
The Himalayas
The Alps
The Rockies

5. Definite article 'the' is used before names of families

The Ashades
The Ayodejis
The Daniels

6. Definite and 'the' is used before the names of:

Canals - The Suez
Seas - The Pacific, The Mediterranean
Rivers - The Niger, The Benue

7. Definite article 'the' is used before tribes marked by language

The Yoruba
The English
The French
The Sudanese

Definite article 'the' is used before titles

The Governor
The President
The Vice-Chancellor
The Auditor-General
The Chief of Army staff

9. Of any two or more people or things, the one known better is has the before the name

I spoke to one Wole of Lagos City Hall and not to the Wole of the Novel Laureate Fame
