Undisguised Evil or Scapegoat: Evolved Apes Сaught in the Middle of a Rug-Pull Scandal 🙈
Another rug-pull story broke around Evolved Apes, "a collection of 10,000 unique NFTs trapped inside a lawless land" as it described itself on OpenSea. In the case of the NFT project, which launched quite recently and promised to run a blockchain-based game for the community (which it never did), it turned out to be too simple: one of the developers nicknamed Evil Ape, who was keeping access to the project's wallet, disappeared with 798 Ether in his hands, or over $2.7 million at today's exchange rate. Evolved Ape's Twitter and website, which the hijacker also had access to, are currently inactive.

Evil Ape disappeared, taking the money the project earned from the public sale of NFTs and commissions from secondary market sales with him. The news about the rug pull became public on Friday and since then the floor price of the project's NFTs on the OpenSea marketplace fell to 0.005 ETH, while the average price plummeted from 0.22 ETH on September 25 to 0.035 ETH today.

The community of the project doesn't give up and intends to continue its work, or rather to create a new, similar, but more decentralized project called Fight Back Apes, one of the missions of which will be to battle Evil Ape.

The investors of the project, who were contacted by Motherboard (the technical branch of the online magazine Vice), say that they have seen "red flags" suggesting the unreliability of the team, but attributed this to immaturity.

Bitcoin Hits $55k Again with a Market Cap of $1T 🚀
BTC is up 6.6% in the last hour and 10% overnight, breaking the $55k threshold, according to Coingecko.

Right now, Bitcoin is trading at $54,400, the highest mark for the asset since May 12, the last bullish days before the heaviest wave of plunges following the crackdown on cryptocurrency miners by the Chinese authorities. At this point, it is safe to say that the effects of the People's Bank of China's targeting of cryptocurrencies have been overcome. Traders expect the $57k level for BTC in the coming days.

Bitcoin's market capitalization has also rehabilitated. The index crossed the $1 trillion line again today around 1:20 p.m. UTC. This figure was also last seen only in mid-May.

Over $18 Billion Locked on All Ethereum Bridges, Etherscan Reports 🌉
Etherscan published its findings on Ethereum bridging statistics, the major one is that TVL on all Ethereum networks has passed $18.5 billion, and Polygon is no longer the most popular Ethereum second layer solution, judging by September deposits.

The Axie Infinity's Ronin bridge is obviously at its peak, with over 25% of the total amount locked, and the native token of the gaming platform is the most bridged token with $4.6 billion in AXS. The same index of Aave’s token shows lower figures, which may be due to people switching from the Polygon to the Avalanche version of the lending protocol.

Compared to the numbers from the summer, when Polygon was at its peak and leading in all metrics, funds locked on sidechains and layer 2 are now slightly more evenly distributed with Polygon POS (29.5%), Ronin (25.4%), Avalanche (15.9%), Arbitrum (8.5%), and Fantom (4.61%) leading the way. The amount of deposits on the bridges is now at its peak, even in comparison with the high figures of May, in total $12 billion was deposited in September, and Polygon is no longer the leader (as it was in May). The most money was deposited on Arbitrum and Avalanche.

Compared to June, when in addition to Polygon, only two bridges had more than $100 million locked, that figure is now found on 15 bridges, and on three the amount of locked assets exceeds $1 billion. The three Polygon bridges now have a combined $5.5 billion locked, the Ronin bridge holds $4.73 billion, the Avalanche bridge has $2.96 billion and $1.34 billion held on Arbitrum. Also almost or more than $500 million is locked on the dydx, AnySwap, and Solana bridges.

Judging by Etherscan's statistics, sidechains remain the number one choice of scaling protocols, with 82% of assets of all Ethereum bridges locked on them. Despite seemingly strong growth in scaling chains, their share of the total pie has only increased by three percent (15.3%) since June to $2.8 billion, with Arbitrum responsible for $1.5 billion of that.

Shiba Inu Continues to Surge, Becoming 12th-Largest Crypto 🐶
This week Shiba Inu became the 12th biggest cryptocurrency as the SHIB token has been showing continuous growth since October 4.

According to CoinGecko, SHIB gained 32% in price over the last 24 hours and more than 345% in a week and is currently traded at $0.00003096.

Coincidental or not, the recent SHIB surge started when Elon Musk tweeted a picture of his puppy, causing a wave of replies from his followers that sent SHIB onto the Twitter trends board.

Shiba Inu launched its meme token designed by the likeness of Dogecoin in August 2020. What started as a joke now has a market capitalization of over $15.5 billion.

Meter Passport Has Added Support for Theta, In Test Mode So Far
Meter Passport, a cross-chain bridge, has added support for Theta blockchain. For now the bridge from Theta to Ethereum is available on Theta testnet, mainnet is promised soon.

The Meter Passport bridge can be used to transfer TFUEL or other TNT20 tokens to other blockchains and vice versa. The bridge announcement post gives an example of Ethereum-based stablecoins being integrated into the Theta network in the near future. They could be transferred onto the network via the Meter Passport bridge and used for example on ThetaSwap DEX, which in turn would benefit from additional liquidity inflows.

What's Going on with Fantom: Nansen Added the Project to Their Dashboard, TVL Boosted by $4 Billion in a Day 😱
The Fantom network is in the spotlight right now: in one day, blockchain analytics platform Nansen.ai added Fantom to their dashboard, and the project's TVL increased by $4 billion or 152%, jumping from $2.4B to $6.05B according to DeFiLlama. The FTM token is up 33.8% overnight and is trading at $1.92, according to Coingecko.

It's been a month since their 370M FTM (~$321.5M when the program was announced) incentive program was announced, and the platform is reaping the benefits. At the end of September, Fantom even briefly surpassed Ethereum in the number of transactions, reaching the 1.8 million mark, while Ethereum was balancing around 1.2 million, according to Nansen.

The large-scale incentive program for 370M FTM was being handed out to projects with a certain TVL threshold (from $5 million) to launch liquidity mining. The most common way to attract the audience of both developers and users worked, and since the announcement date of August 30, the price of FTM began to rise and by today has increased by more than 152%.

Fantom's functionality is just right for such migrations - scalability and composability are among the main goals pursued by the creators of the EVM-compatible 'network of networks’ offering low gas and high finality rates.
Nansen's data also shows that 12,800 smart contracts per day were deployed on the Fantom platform on a peak day in early September. During this period, the number of new smart contracts deployed a day on Fantom briefly exceeded the same index on Ethereum. According to DeFiLlama, Fantom's TVL increased by 215% from $760.93M on Aug. 30 to $2.4B on Oct. 6. And if you take into account the spike from Oct. 6 to Oct. 7, when the total value locked in the network jumped another $4 billion, that's a two-month increase of almost 700%. What happens when the rewards of a generous multi-million dollar motivational program are exhausted, we shall see.

Ethereum Miners Are Reluctant to Sell, Holding over $1.85B in ETH
As the price of Ethereum is on the rise this week, reaching over $3,618 today, some researchers point out the unusual behavior of the network’s miners.

According to research firm Santiment, the amount of ETH stored on miners' accounts has reached its maximum since July 2016. The miners currently hold over 532k of ETH worth approximately $1.85 billion which is undoubtedly an all-time high since the launch of the network.

That is unusual behavior as the miners used to sell their profits for the needed upgrades such as new equipment and utility payments. Their reluctance to sell may signal the future price surges of the second-largest cryptocurrency.

Vitalik Buterin Criticizes Bukele for Compulsory Bitcoinization of El Salvador ☝🏼
Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin has criticized the president of El Salvador Nayib Bukele for forcible Bitcoin adoption by businesses in his country.

Buterin shared his opinion in a Reddit post calling Bukele’s practice “reckless”. Since last month, it has become obligatory for private companies in El Salvador to accept Bitcoin as a payment method. Buterin pointed out that with no prior educational efforts regarding cryptocurrency payments this new law will expose lots of ordinary people to scammers and hackers.

"Making it mandatory for businesses to accept a specific cryptocurrency is contrary to the ideals of freedom that are supposed to be so important to the crypto space," Buterin wrote. Ethereum creator also shamed Bitcoin maximalists who praise Bukele uncritically.

Responding to his own critics, Buterin exposed a few instances when he’s got to criticize Ethereum and some of the projects built upon it.

ThorSwap DEX Restored Most of Its Cross-Chain Connections 🔧
Cross-chain decentralized exchange ThorSwap has restored users’ access to four of five networks that were unavailable since July.

According to the recent announcement from the devs, users can now transact across Bitcoin, Litecoin, Binance Smart Chain, and Bitcoin Cash. The team is now working on returning the access to the Ethereum network.

The developers also shed some light on ThorChain future evolution, adding that the team is preparing to integrate Terra stablecoin network and decentralized finance hub Gaia. Among other cross-chain connections to follow the devs mentioned Dogecoin (DOGE), Decred, Haven, and Monero (XMR).

ThorSwap launched its guarded “chaosnet” in April. In June and July ThorChain suffered from three consecutive attacks, losing around $8 million to hackers. The network then was forced to shut down some of its services.

IMF Marks Cryptocurrencies and Stablecoins as a Threat to the Global Economy👺
The International Monetary Fund sees the adoption of cryptocurrencies by some countries as a threat to the global financial system, according to the latest organization’s report.

IMF stated that such risks should be closely monitored given inadequate regulations in most jurisdictions. In its 2021 Global Financial Stability Report The IMF calls for “global standards for crypto assets."

The organisation also expressed its concern about the growing use of stablecoins such as Tether and USDC. IMF identified stablecoins as potential threats to the global financial system proposing that disclosure standards for stablecoin issuers should be substantially upgraded and the same regulations that apply to money markets and commercial banks need to be applied to stabilize the stablecoin industry.
