When and how to start answer writing practice is perhaps the most asked query apart from Current Affairs Strategy.

Here is my take on it, including:

As many are asking about how to self-evaluate answers, i am resharing my answer writing strategy.

If u r following ans structure tht i have told (intro, news background, headings, points = marks, keywords, diagram, conclusion) then u dont need evaluation or u can self evaluate..

Mains Answer Presentation:

In My Answer Writing Strategy post I dealt with nuances of answer writing that helped me score 340, 387, 426 and 463 in GS in CSE 13, 14, 15 and 17 respectively.

Also, I have already dealt with other aspects like diagrams for mains, how to break down questions into parts and how to reduce time to think during writing answers.

This post deals with presentation part of answer writing. You must have heard that answer presentation must be good to score big in Mains.

Here is my analysis of Prelims 2022 GS Paper and 2023 thematic prediction.

I have covered following:

Detailed subject/topic wise classification of questions.

For benefit of all, I have clearly mentioned Set-A question numbers in front of subjects so that you can confirm and analyze the classification yourself.

Classification based on nature of questions i.e. Current or Static or Mix of current-static-common sense.

Detailed thematic prediction of 2023 prelims GS Paper i.e. from which subjects I expect more questions or from which subject I expect application or current based questions.

Booklist and Sources

#Mains is the most certain phase of #UPSC Civil Service Exam. We associate the term '#Luck Factor' a lot with UPSC #CSE but trust me, Mains phase of the exam rewards your well-directed efforts.

Once you decode what UPSC/Examiner wants from you, you can easily crack Mains and crack it repeatedly if need be. Before I share how I cracked 4/4 Mains with hefty margin over average score of selected candidates in a particular year (leave apart cut-off which is offcourse lower than average score), let me share my marks as evidence for what I will be guiding next:

CSE 2013: 340 in #GS
CSE 2014: 822 in Mains (11th highest among selected candidates)
CSE 2015: 426 in GS (5th highest among selected candidates)
CSE 2017: 463 in GS

These scores in Mains led to my 3 selections and made #interview scores of 118, 110, 154 and 165 irrelevant to an extent as despite below average interview scores, I could make the final list thrice.

So, what is the trick? Well, I am old school and did it the hard way but you may pick and choose what works for you and devise your own plan from below:

1) #Newspaper reading and Notes Making of both #CurrentAffairs & #Static formed basis of my Mains scores as your #answers will only be as good as your content is. Refer one newspaper and concise booklist.

2) #Unique Content & #Xfactor: Imagine yourself in examiner's shoes. Say, s/he has already checked 49 copies in a day and then in 50th copy s/he finds unique points, #keywords, #presentation, #diagrams etc. S/he is bound to give more marks to that aspirant. Be unique.

3) #Revision: Once you are done with note making and have added uniqueness to your notes in form of #value addition or enrichment, revise them 4-5-6 times. Once you do that, your entire content will be painted in your memory like a #mindmap and you will be able to #interlink concepts across paper/subjects, thus adding extra #depth and #dimensions to tour answers.

4) #Practice: I always had the innate ability to write. Hence, I hardly practiced #answerwriting other than in mock tests. But, if you do not have the skill then you have to practice on daily basis.

b) My answer writing strategy.
c) What does the examiner wants?
d) X-factor or uniqueness in Mains.

Go through the various posts grouped in this one post. Think through the strategies mentioned therein. #Adapt and #adopt as per your needs.

While, there is no one fix strategy or only one strategy that can bear fruits, what I have mentioned here is my tried and tested approach for Mains.
