*Waves Explained Simply 🔬*

A *wave* is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. Think of it like passing a message in a crowd - the message moves, but the people mostly stay in place.

---

1. *2 Main Types of Waves*

*1. Mechanical Waves*
Need a medium to travel through - solid, liquid, or gas.
- _Example_: Sound waves, water waves, waves on a rope
- _Why_: Particles vibrate and pass energy to the next particle

*2. Electromagnetic Waves*
Don’t need a medium. They travel through vacuum/light.
- _Example_: Light, radio waves, X-rays, microwaves
- _Why_: They’re made of oscillating electric and magnetic fields

---

2. *2 Ways Waves Move*

*1. Transverse Waves*
Particles move *up and down* while the wave moves *left to right*.
- _Looks like_: Ripples on water, light waves
- _Parts_: Crest = peak, Trough = lowest point

*2. Longitudinal Waves*
Particles move *back and forth* in the same direction as the wave.
- _Looks like_: Slinky being pushed, sound waves
- _Parts_: Compression = particles close, Rarefaction = particles spread out

---

3. *Key Terms You Must Know*

- *Wavelength (λ)*: Distance between 2 crests or 2 compressions. Measured in meters.
- *Frequency (f)*: How many waves pass a point per second. Measured in Hertz (Hz).
- *Amplitude*: Height of the wave. Bigger amplitude = more energy/louder sound/brighter light.
- *Speed (v)*: How fast the wave travels. Formula:
v = f \times \lambda

4. *Real-Life Examples for You

1. *Sound* = Longitudinal mechanical wave
When you speak, your vocal cords vibrate air particles. Those vibrations hit someone’s ear drum. No air = no sound. That’s why there’s silence in space.

2. *Light* = Transverse electromagnetic wave
Sunlight reaches Earth in 8 minutes even though there’s vacuum between. That’s why we can see the sun and stars.

3. *Water wave* = Transverse mechanical wave
Drop a stone in a pond. The water moves up/down, but the water itself doesn’t travel to the edge. The energy does.
