Yesterday, 4th March, the Wizz Air flight W66403 departed from Kutaisi to Larnaca with a delay of over 4 hours - it was scheduled to depart at 20:30 but took off at 01:05 (already 5th March).

The delay began on the previous flight from Athens to Kutaisi. For unknown reasons, the aircraft could not land at Kutaisi airport and flew to Tbilisi. From Tbilisi to Kutaisi, it departed at 23:20.

Therefore, the return flight W66404 from Larnaca to Kutaisi was also delayed (instead of 21:45, it departed at 01:54).

According to EU Regulation 261/2004, if a flight is delayed for more than 3 hours, passengers may claim compensation. More details here.

Wizz Air is very reluctant to pay compensations. In their refusal, they usually state that the delay occurred due to extraordinary circumstances, without specifying what those are. According to many passengers' reviews, companies like AirHelp have been helpful in obtaining compensation.

Wizz Air has suspended flights for just over 20% of its fleet due to difficulties in servicing Pratt & Whitney engines.

According to Flightradar24, the company's fleet consists of 204 Airbus family aircraft, of which 44 have not been flying for some time.

A significant portion of these aircraft stopped flying in January this year, with a few already in 2023. Thus, 1 aircraft has not flown since August, 2 airliners have been grounded since September, 3 since October, and 2 since November. One of the aircraft (HA-LZJ), which had been regularly flying from and to Larnaca for several months, has been in the Czech Republic since January.

The lack of aircraft led to adjustments in Wizz Air's schedule. From Larnaca, the company cancelled flights to Vienna in April-May, reduced the frequency of flights to Hungary (Debrecen and Budapest), and there are no tickets available for Copenhagen, as well as Dammam, Riyadh, and Jeddah.

If the aircraft do not return to the skies in the foreseeable future, further changes to the schedule are not ruled out. However, the president of Wizz Air told In-Cyprus in an interview that these are temporary difficulties and as soon as the aircraft are restored, the routes will return to the schedule, and the introduction of new routes is also expected.

Ukraine is negotiating with American and European aviation regulators to resume air connections. This was announced in an interview with RBK-Ukraine by the country's Deputy Prime Minister for Infrastructure, Olexander Kubrakov.

According to him, drawing on Israel's experience in securing air travel, Ukraine is already conveying to aviation regulators its vision, risk assessments, and approaches on how the market will operate under martial law conditions.

The plan is to open airspace for American, European, and Ukrainian carriers, with whom negotiations are already underway. For instance, Ryanair recently reported plans to resume flights to cities in Ukraine as soon as air communication is reopened.

Request for Reinstatement of Cyprus-Yerevan Flights.docx
13.8 KB
Dear travellers!

Following Cyprus Airways' decision to remove flights between Larnaca and Yerevan from their schedule, many of you have experienced inconvenience due to the closure of this route.

The lack of competition has predictably led to an increase in ticket prices by the two other carriers operating this route. It has also become more difficult to transport pets.

We suggest reaching out to the airline with a request to consider reinstating the flights. We have drafted a letter that each of you, who are interested and in need of this route, can sign and send to the airline.

You can send it via the link.

It is possible that, by assessing the volume of letters and the interest from passengers towards this route, the company may reinstate it.

It seems that an affordable jaunt to Mars will not be feasible anytime soon.

Ryanair has removed from its summer schedule the flights between Paphos 🇨🇾 and Amman 🇯🇴. A few flights are still planned for March. For instance, from the 23rd or 25th to the 30th of March, one can fly to Jordan for €47.

From April onwards, the only option for a direct flight from Larnaca to Amman will be with Royal Jordanian, but the price for a return ticket will be higher - around €200, depending on the date required.
