■ EMERGENCY PROVISIONS

◇ The Indian Constitution contains elaborate emergency provisions to enable the President to meet any extraordinary situation effectively.

◇ The rationality behind the
incorporation of these provisions is to safeguard the sovereignty, unity, integrity and security of the country, the democratic political system and the Constitution.

□ The Constitution envisages three types of emergencies, namely :-

•  National emergency on the ground of war or external aggression or armed rebellion (Article 352);

• State emergency (President’s Rule) on the ground of failure of Constitutional machinery in the states (Article 356) or
failure to comply with the directions of the Centre (Article 365); and

• Financial emergency on the ground of threat to the financial stability or credit of India (Article 360).
UNIVERSAL ADULT FRANCHISE

◇ The Indian Constitution adopts universal adult franchise as a basis of elections to the Lok Sabha and the state legislative assemblies.

◇ Every citizen who is not less than 18 years of age has a right to vote without any discrimination of caste, race, religion, sex, literacy, wealth and so on.

◇ The voting age was reduced to 18 years from 21 years in 1989 by the 61st Constitutional Amendment Act of 1988.

A BORROWED CONSTITUTION

◇ The critics opined that the Indian Constitution contains nothing new and original. They described it as a ‘borrowed Constitution’ or a ‘bag of borrowings’ or a ‘hotch-potch Constitution’ or a ‘patchwork’ of several documents of the world constitutions.

◇ However, this criticism is unfair and illogical. This is because, the framers of the Constitution made necessary modifications in the features borrowed from other constitutions for their suitability to the Indian conditions, at the same time avoiding their faults.

◇ While answering the above criticism in the Constituent Assembly, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the Chairman of the Drafting Committee, said : “One likes to ask whether there can be anything new in a Constitution framed at this hour in the history of the world.

SUFISM

• Sufism or mysticism emerged in the 8th century. By the 12th century, the Sufis were organised in Silsilahs (i.e., orders, which basically represented an unbreakable chain between the Pir, the teacher, and the murids, the disciples). The four most popular Silsilahs were the Chistis, Suhrawardis, Qadiriyahs, and Naqshbandis.

• There were two broad Sufi orders:

o Bashara – Those who obeyed the Islamic laws.

o Beshara – Those who were more liberal.

• Alongside the liberal and unorthodox Sufi movement, the Bhakti cult was gaining strength among the Hindus and these two parallel movements based on the doctrines of love and selfless devotion contributed a great deal in bringing both the communities of Hindus and Muslims closer together.

🔆Hololens

Microsoft HoloLens, known under development as Project Baraboo, is a stand-alone mixed reality holographic headset specifically designed to be used on the Windows 10 platform.

HoloLens allows users to experience 3D holographic images as though they are a part of their environment.

This level of immersion enables new forms of computing in which the user’s desktop could be the living room. You might stream Netflix on a wall or build a Minecraft castle on your coffee table, as high resolution holograms.

Along with its CPU and GPU the unit features a new first: a holographic processing unit (HPU) that is responsible for the processing that integrates real world and holographic data.
