The previous commander of the 59th Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Bohdan Shevchuk, confirmed that he was replaced and suggests that it was because he withdrew his soldiers from a position that was under threat of encirclement.

Ukrainska Pravda reports that, amidst ongoing command issues and corruption allegations, the 155th Mechanized Brigade has recorded more than 1,200 cases of AWOL/desertion since the beginning of 2025. The main causes are transferring soldiers from different MOS' to the infantry and a lack of support, including supply of UAVs. Their sources also allege that other kickbacks were occurring in other battalions in the brigade. After the article was published, Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi ordered an additional investigation into the allegations.

@MrClarkyofAxel: Ukrainian law enforcement have already detained a battalion commander on suspicion of taking kickbacks, so I don't think it gives anything away.

@NotWoofers: The higher figure was from the fall of 2024 I believe. This number is only for 2025.

@MrClarkyofAxel: I think there is a balance. I think our example of how we fought in Afghanistan and senior leaders selectively publicized positive metrics to give a false sense of success was very damaging.

@NotWoofers: No, I think the 1,700 was from 2024 (would have to go back and check) and it is an additional 1,200 so far in 2025. But AWOL figures will also count guys who will leave and join other units or who may return, so the figure doesn't necessarily represent a permanent loss of soldiers.

@NotWoofers @ryanscottborman @cameron19460429: Yes, to get the same coverage they need 1:1 batteries with either 1 LTAMDS or 3 legacy MPQ-53/65s. Zelensky has spoken about them really wanting 25 *battalions* which is 10 more than the US Army has themselves.

@MCherokee27947 @flying_seed: Where are you getting this idea from? The form factor is not even close to being the same. ER-GMLRS has a larger diameter and substantially larger SRM. Requires a brand new LPC as well to accommodate the increased weight and size.

RT @FRHoffmann1: Observers of the war in Ukraine are regularly confronted with a paradox. On one hand, Russia is suffering horrendous casualties and failing—at least by the measure of its initial political objectives. On the other hand, European NATO states are scrambling to rearm in response to what they increasingly view as an existential threat.
These two images of Russia -- the failing army and the existential threat -- seem difficult to reconcile. That is what I explore in my latest article for @ForeignPolicy.
The key to resolving this paradox, I argue, lies in understanding that a war between NATO and Russia would look fundamentally different from the war currently unfolding in Ukraine.
Rather than attempting to seize and hold large swaths of territory, Russia would likely pursue a short, high-intensity campaign aimed at fracturing NATO’s political cohesion. The goal would not be total military victory, but to break the alliance’s...
