Yesterday. Secretary Rubio testified to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the Syrian government was “maybe weeks” away from a full-scale civil war absent more foreign support and investment.
“Right now, the most important thing is that partnering nations, nations in the region, want to get aid in ... and they can’t because they’re afraid of our sanctions,” Rubio said.
Anton’s argument internally is that President Trump wants to relieve the Syria sanctions only after the government fulfills several conditions. Rubio’s public testimony is the opposite. Who is in charge at State? Anton or Rubio?
In Riyadh, President Trump said, "I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness.” Not “slowly over several years.” Who is in charge of Syria policy? Anton or the President?
MAGA people are always complaining about neocons in the deep state working the system to stop Trump from implementing his clearly stated foreign policy announcements. This time, it’s MAGA world doing it. Somebody should ask Rubio about this at today’s hearing.
